Oh, wigs, frills and high heels..?
Nope, not Drag this time. Even though wigs and heels are involved. And men. You see, clothing does have a history. And there's always a story behind the person (a man, in this case) wearing those clothes. This is the Stuart court, after all. And this, Constant Reader is how it was done.
I think this video will give you an idea of how things have changed. And how much things have stayed the same: we still tell the world WHO we are by dressing in a certain way. Be it to go to an audience with Charles II or to go pick some lettuce at Trader Joe’s, your clothing tells a story. And trust me, even though I would have also needed a dresser in the XVII century, I'd have settled for getting Toby Lord out of those understockings.

It might be fun to set Toby free from his "drag."

I VOLUNTEER AS A TRIBUTE!

Fascinating how masculinity was once expressed.
ReplyDeleteOhh yes.
DeleteMen were total peacocks. And many things considered 'feminine' now were the rage among males.

HuntleyBiGuy :
ReplyDeleteHe does look quite good all dressed up. But the summers must have been horrendous under all of those layers and long wig. But yes, let’s free Toby from all of that.
XOXO 👨🏼❤️💋👨🏽
Oh, yes.
DeleteHe looks good even with that wig. And remember, baths were optional....
I prefer him in his underwear, anyway.

And, of course, this was a style for the wealthy, the average person like you and I could never have afforded this luxury.
ReplyDeleteHuntleyBiGuy:
DeleteDave, didn’t you know that Six is independently wealthy? Oops, I guess I shouldn’t have mentioned that. 🤷♂️
Yes, of course.
DeleteThere's silk involved. And he's going to see the king. That's why clothes have always signaled status.
@huntley: you crack me UP!

Big says,
ReplyDeleteI believe I would've rebelled against all those layers of material --- particularly in Summer months. But, then, alas! I would've been labeled a commoner and lower caste. LOL.
Oh, but they probably worked for summer.
DeleteSilk and organza in the summer and wool in the winter.
And clothing would definitely signal social class in this case.

I’ve seen this before and enjoyed seeing it again. Toby Lord sure is cute and he shows good calf.
ReplyDeleteIsn't it awesome?
DeleteAnd Toby is very delectable.
