Luz

Luz entered the United States via an official port of entry and asked for protection through political asylum. She was promptly imprisoned. “I had already been imprisoned [in Honduras], and didn’t want to experience another situation like what I had been through,” she says in the film.

Later, Luz would learn that her ICE Detention Center, New Mexico’s Cibola County Correctional Facility, was previously a criminal correctional prison. In October 2016, it was shut down due to inhumane conditions that resulted in several inmate deaths. Shortly thereafter, ICE offered a $30 million/year contract to the same facility. It reopened in January 2017. Since early 2018, Cibola has incarcerated more than 180 women in its “transgender pod”—the only known ICE-run detention facility for transgender-identifying women. According to Johnson, the incarcerated women, like Luz, sought protection from violence and persecution they suffered in their home countries. Read more:

The horrible treatment this administration is giving to immigrants is a shame (think of those children in cages or the rids ICE carries out).  But we all know that. I'm not writing anything new here. The inhumane conditions in which people who came to America seeking asylum found themselves is a national emergency. And the Republicans think it's the immigrants' fault because they come to America. Especially Evangelical Republicans:

Opinion among Democrats and Democratic leaners has changed little over this period: Currently, 74% say the U.S. has a responsibility to accept refugees, about three times the share of Republicans saying this.

The recent shift among Republicans has been driven by conservatives. In 2017, a third of conservative Republicans said the U.S. has a responsibility to accept refugees. But today, an even smaller share (19%) says this. There has been less change among moderate and liberal Republicans: Currently, 40% say the U.S. has a responsibility to accept refugees. As was the case last year, liberal Democrats (85%) are more likely than conservative and moderate Democrats (65%) to say the U.S. has a responsibility to accept refugees.

Oh, are you surprised? That was rhetorical, darling.

  1. I think all of us are in a state of shock at the moment. Living in a strongly Latino influenced area, people are very afraid whether they are LGBT or straight. The raid in Mississippi after the mass shootings is truly frightening.

  2. yesterday was another shiny object to divert & deflect. the current dictatorship has no heart/soul/conscience/morals/ethics.

  3. The Republicans have one priority: white supremacy, they don't realize that evolution is already fucking up their shit.

  4. @jimmy: yes, we are. The raid in Mississippi is another show. The owner of the chicken plant owed his workers a class suit action money. He got rid of them and helped Cheeto, who went on to have a photo op with patients who were not in the massacre and a baby orphaned by his rhetoric. Barf.
@annemarie: this is the reality tv presidency. Craven and amoral.
@dave: yep. The ‘white anxiety’ excuse that has driven this nation for years.
