The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is proposing a major change to the administrative rule interpreting Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) to remove explicit protections for LGBTQ people in healthcare programs and activities by excluding protections from discrimination based on sex stereotyping and gender identity.
This vile administration is trying to erode your rights one by one. With Michael Pence leading the charge of bigoted wingnuts, the gains you and I may take for granted could be taken away in a heartbeat. While us, in all our comfortable entitlement think this only happens to ‘the queers’ (the femmes, the fats, the trans, the non-passing) we need to stop for a second and check our privilege. We may not have it for long. The religious right will chafe at Cheeto swearing, but the evangelicals will rally around him to vanish the queer.
Oh, you think the attacks of this administration are only against immigrants? Think again. The same administration that's reviving 19th century schemes to block poor immigrants from entering the country is slowly but surely chipping away at LGBTQ rights. maybe not as overtly, but certainly as surely. The acts of Resistance cannot stop while this administration is in power. They should be a constant, rather than a sporadic occurrence. The never ending micro aggressions inflicted in the hard-earned rights of the LGBTQ community will not stop until Cheeto and his minions are wiped from office and public life.
So go ahead. Tell the Federal Government that you do not approve of its open homophobia. Because eventually they're going to come for us, in all our entitlement. And if we don't speak out now, we may not have the chance to do it then.
