Oh. Azealia Banks. This girl gets me all confused. Why? Cause I love her music, but her antics turn me completely off. She’s another of my ‘separate the art from the artist’ situation... because the undeniably talented Azealia is a problem child. When I heard 212 back in the day I was like 'WHO is she?' I played that song until I got (some) of the lyrics and then went online to find out what she was talking about. The song was full of inside jokes and was witty, dirty and fun. The infectious beat was pure House and the lyrics pure street wisdom.

You see, I find that Rap per se does not attract me. What attracts me is the ability to spit rhymes like it's nothing while at the same time following a complex rhythm and telling a story. So I guess I'm more into Hip-Hop than rap, huh? Oh, I know people who do not listen to these music genres confuse the one for the other. Azealia, being a New York girl, is much more Hip-Hop, of course, and having gone viral with 212 so young painted her as a budding talent.

But dear Azealia has had myriad problems and her confrontational, blunt opinions and most times downright offensive rants have weighed much more than her talent. To date, she's gotten in trouble for accusing Normani for impersonating Beyonce, has dissed Lizzo (another awesome artist) and called her a Mammy. She has imagined Elon Musk's execution after being embroiled with him and Banks when she tweeted that maybe Elon was tripping on acid while on social media. Add to that Azealia calling Irish women ugly, getting in a fight with Russell Crow and apologizing to Zayn Malik for racist comments she made about him. She even went against RuPaul for biting her style in one of her songs and against Drag Race.

And that could be considered just gossip and I would laugh it off (even though I would still consider it problematic at many levels) but what I can't overlook is that Azealia, who identifies as bisexual, has said some pretty homophobic things though the years. She throws 'faggot' around (be it at a flight attendant or at Perez Hilton?) and then she says she can't be homophobic because she's bisexual and because it's used from a feminist perspective. I can't with homophobia.

Still, Azealia keeps churning infectious, fun records (even though I am still waiting for a full-on album that has not materialized). I feel really discouraged because even though I have not bought any of her latest mixtapes, I was hoping that she was going to be huge. Girl is talented, but has more issues than Rolling Stone.

So yeah. I'm still torn. But that's why I call her my guilty pleasure, no?

XOXO

  1. So far I've learned most artists that contain the name Azealia are sort of nuts and controversial. Iggy Azealia comes to mind. I cant stomach either. I'm old, my guilty pleasure is Emma Bunton. And some days Dakota Stanton., and Mavis Staples.

    1. I know right? Iggy has that Fancy single and then disappeared. Her and her fake blaccent were not needed. And honey, come and sit by me and we’ll drink wine and listen to Mavis.

  4. I never heard of her before and from what you are saying she is a problem child but I think that seems to be part of the younger generations culture, maybe a way to get free publicity. I have to be completely honest and say I liked all three videos, I think these would be great tunes on the dance floor, especially the first one.

    1. OMG that’s my whole issue with her: she’s obviously talented and puts out amazing bangers but she’s a terrible person!
      The 212 is a BLAST!

    1. Lmao yeah, it’s very specific and culturally bound to urban life. But that makes it really cool imho. And I love the sixties and seventies! And the eighties are awesome!
