(if you cannot watch here, you may need to go to YouTube, those bastards)

I first posted about her last xmas.
And then fellow blogger Un-Angel posted her recently and I decided to unearth this video of Billie Eilish singing an unplugged, quasi-informal version of some of her songs. You see, I like artists from a very gut-feeling kind of place. I either like or don't like an artist and that's about it.

And I like Billie Eilish. The same way I loved another Billie from the first time I heard her (my first CD was a Billie Holiday CD, mind you) I found myself attracted to Billie Eilish's voice. It happened the same with Amy Winehouse and Rehab. I heard Amy on the radio and was immediately hooked. I went out and bought her CD without even listening to the other songs. It was that powerful. It's something about the way they phrase their verses, the way their voices carry, the way they seem wiser beyond their years or the way they interpret my suffering, longings and thoughts.

I was thinking about Billie this past 9/11 and thought: 'Damn. she does not have a recollection of 9/11. She was born AFTER 9/11 happened'. Yep. This singer was born in 2001. A bona fide millennial. Or maybe even something new, because she was basically born right after the XX century ended. And she's not 'new' (I laughed at that myself) because she's been chugging along since 2017 (I know, way back then when she was like, sixteen?) but it's not only her wise-beyond-her-years voice and lyrics, it's that strange vibe her voice has, the way she phrases her sentences, that whisper that gets under your skin.

She apparently came to fame in the most post-millenum way possible: she went viral with a song she posted for one of her teachers on one of those streaming sites. Now she's got a number one song and is touring the world, and singing with the idols who used to adorn her bedroom walls. Ain't that very post-post-modern?

In any case, here's Billie unplugged, singing with her brother (who co-writes and produces her songs) in a very 'informal' way, for full effect. I'll also post some of her videos below so you can see more or less why her visuals and style also appeal to me (and to millions of people who have bought her albums). So yeah, I'm a Billie Eilish fan. And I did buy her first album and will most probably buy her second, too.

Happy listening!

XOXO

  1. Very nice. I'd never heard of her before.
As for the "original" Billie and Amy,I'm with you.I have been a Holiday fan for eons now, and was struck by Amy the first time I heard her sing.
Those are voices, man. Real voices.

    1. I totally agree! It’s all in the voices. They reach in and grab at us. I’m still not over Amy passing away. Nope.

  3. Interesting videos (Part A & B?)

She's one of those breathy voiced singers. Does she ever belt anything out?

    1. Yes! I thought they were part of a story, too! She’s developing into quite the visual artist. And I have not heard her belt out. I think she knows how to sing and people have talked bout her voice control, but she’s mainly made a name with this kind of singing. I like it.

  4. I know who she is, I find that she often reminds me of Fiona Apple a little. She can sing , I think she needs different music to bring out her abilities more. She has a hit right now with "Bad Guy" it's not my style but it's certainly different from the other stuff on the radio.

    1. OMG Steven, yes! Many parallels with Fiona. Never thought about it that way. I think she could evolve into something with time. She’s young. And I love Bad Guy!
