Bilal

I had no idea who Bilal was when I clicked on the video. I do follow Loic Prigent because he does some insider videos of the collections and they are incredibly fun and informative. And then youtube, in its infinite wisdom and stalker-is nature suggested I watch the Courreges show with Bilal. And voila! I was hooked.

Bilal apparently took part of Eurovision and represented France in 2019. I'm isolated in America because American media is very self-contained and we seldom get news that are not related to whatever inane endeavor is that we are obsessing at a given moment. I had to google Bilal to understand what he was doing in Loic's video. He has more than half a million instagram followers.

I find this generation of social media savvy people really interesting, both for their absolute lack of inhibition and the easiness with which they share their -very curated- lives online with whomever is there to watch. I find that lack of boundaries both alluring and alarming. I could not help but think about the revenge porn story of Katie Hill and how the repug operatives basically shamed her into stepping down from her position.
I think that would not have happened to a man (double standards, am I right?) and also, eventually so many people will have all their lives uploaded to the ether that fewer people will care if there’s nude pictures of somebody with political ambitions. Well, unless they’re repugs, because the GOP knows no shame.

  1. Totally out of the loop here. I listen to a podcast from Slate called Working. This season they are talking to social media influencers. Who knew you could bake a living by posting your (as you said) very curated life for all to see.

And then you have the only fans and just for fans sites. The new world economy. 😕

    1. It’s is a new world economy, you’re right. These people I’ve off clickbait and ‘content’. It’s a consumer driven dream.

  2. I don't know. It's so, je ne sais quoi to me. It's all fun and games until someone catches you doing something non non and it's over. Until you open a new IG account and are off again. I can't imagine being ON all the time. I can't imagine going out with someone who must capture every moment of every thing they do. How tripod. Trite? IG porn? Gawd, I miss the good old bartering days when we traded knick knacks for favors. Now there's some quoi I understand.

    1. That’s my thing too! How on earth can you be ON all the time? And you’d need to, if you want those clicks. Exhausted just thinking about it. Oh, Knick knacks for favors. Those were the days.

  3. Interesting. When I dress or behave like that my manservant Clive says I’m acting inappropriately. And here’s someone is making a living looking like AOC dropped acid and decided to explode all over Paris looking like a Hello Kitty cult follower. It’s not fair. Why can’t we all be influencers?

  5. Sorry this is not on point with your post, but I know you're a fan of James and Anthony, the two-spirit winners of the Amazing Race Canada, so thought you'd like to read this article about the inspirational impact they're having on two little Cree girls this Halloween!

  6. I find it sad that people put their lives on social media like that's actually life. It's all set up and posed and Photoshopped and recreated so how can anything be real?

As for Katie Hill, had she been a man there would have been a lot of backslapping in Congress.

    1. It’s all so absolutely made up I think they end up with cognitive dissonance.
And you know the good old boys would be prancing if that happened to them. But it was a girl, so....
