DOUGLASSIMONSON

I thought I would just leave this here. Ever since I started blogging (yeah, I have other blogspot places apart from this one) I have had a soft spot for the art of Douglas Simonson. One, it's naked men. Duh. And two, he seems to bring some needed color to the world of the male nude. I have to confess that I would truly love to have one of his pieces, but alas, I'm not at that level of money yet. I may be able to buy a copy of a pencil drawing but what I would go for is a full-size canvas. Now, that would be a conversation piece.

What I find intriguing is that he's not more famous. I think that we should support artists who basically seem to be in our same wavelength. I don't know why gay men, who (if we go by the stereotypes) seem to have an eye for art (and naked men) do not make this artist better known. I have not seen Out magazine or the Advocate publish more about him. Or more bloggers. I may have to do a search and see who else has published his art. I follow a few gay blogs that publish art but I have not seen his drawings or paintings much. He's got a blog that has not been updated in awhile and he's on Instagram (where his art is censored, of course) so, why don't we see more of him?

What I like about his art is that at the same time that it is obviously well done, it is imbued with a playful sensuality. His men are not erect, like is the case with Tom of Finland, and they are mostly placed in an idyllic tropical Neverland that could basically be Tahiti or Southern California. And even though many of his subjects seem to be caucasian, he seems to have an affinity for portraying men of color in all their glory. And I'm here for that.

So I'll leave you with the idea of trying to get one of his pieces. I think I'm going to start saving to get at least one of the drawings. Or two. I think they would make a fantastic addition to one of my walls. I think everybody should have or two drawings of an artist like him. Yep. I'll start saving my lunch money. Who knows? Maybe I could surprise myself my next birthday.

XOXO

  1. Interesting work. Some of his pieces are very defined and some are more rough and angular. All of it though is very sensual without being pornographic. He seems to show men in their natural settings. I can see why he caught your eye.

    1. That’s true. Very south seas, very nature-oriented. And yes, even though I cannot tell if he’s straight, if he’s gay, he surely likes to get his swirl on!

  6. The black and whites are nice, the colors? The style reminds me too much of Boarderlands.
