I like to watch

Heh. I know where your mind went. But no, this is not about my proclivities as a voyeur but about Katya and Trixie, two Drag Race alumni, talking shit and spilling tea about A.J. and the Queen, a series starring RuPaul currently being streamed on Netflix. And of course, they're hysterical the whole time. It's gonna be a fun fifteen minutes, trust me.

The truth is, Katya and Trixie have great chemistry and are both hysterically funny. Their interactions reminds you of when you get with your bestie and crack each other up constantly. It's like a stream of consciousness trip through Alice's tea party. Since that one time when they hosted one of Raja's and Raven's tooting/booting episodes they became one of the duos to watch on youtube. They even had their own little series on Vice, I think, for awhile.

But here they are talking about A.J. and the Queen and even if you have not seen the series (and like Dave, you do not have Netflix) their review is still worth a watch. They are of course, irreverent, funny and witty but there's an undercurrent of admiration for the work that RuPaul has done that comes out -naturally- in their funny banter. You see, RuPaul has almost single-handedly brought drag performance to the living rooms of myriad homes in middle America that until recently thought drag performances were to be relegated to Monday nights in tiny, smoke-filled bars in the middle of nowhere.

What for many seems a sudden explosion, has been a labor of love that started on Logo, that tiny LGBTQ channel and moved on to VH1 and high definition tv. And RuPaul has been instrumental to that journey, like her or not. And there are people who think she could have done more for drag and be more inclusive. What called my attention is the respect with which Trixie and Katya (two very successful drag queens) talk about Ru and this series. It's a testament to their own self-awareness, but also about the way we should recognize when someone has done a groundbreaking job. Credit when it's due. When you think about contemporary drag performers in America, you do think about RuPaul. I may not have the knowledge Maddie has about drag, but I can recognize a good drag performer when I see them.

Some people have found the acting in the series a little uneven and the child actor a little grating (right, Big?) but that may be a given in a first season. I, for one, enjoyed the series (and the guy who plays RuPaul's boyfriend, natch,) and hope that there is a second season. Having the chance to see RuPaul doing RuPaul is always great. He's a stunning drag presence. And of course, there are Ru girls galore throughout the whole first season breaking havoc and looking fabulous.

So go ahead, I know you like to watch, too.

XOXO

  1. OMG Katya and Trixie are hilarious! The way they follow along and have alternative dialog is gold! And you’re right, they recognize what Ru has done for the genre.

And I just may have to get Netflix. Someday.

  4. I hadn't heard of AJ and the Queen -- thanks for the heads-up! I assume we have it on our Canadian version of Netflix so I must tell My Rare One. She'll want to watch it right away. She adores RuPaul.

  6. I certainly do agree...that kid is obnoxious! I also agree with every observation regarding RuPaul. If it had not been for him (he does refer to himself in that manner in the show), drag would most certainly never have risen to the heights it has achieved. I may have to give this another go - a few more episodes to see if AJ shows any redeeming factors. In the meantime, I have discovered the new Brad Falchuk/Ryan Murphy show, "The Politician." Dark, dark humor as we follow a young gay high-schooler determined to make it all the way to the Oval Office. Timely, no? xoxo

    1. Ha! I knew you'd say that! LOL
You should give it another go! It has very funny moments. The comedy is way better than the drama, but hey.
And I do have The Politician in my queue! I have not started it, though. I have so many series waiting to be watched....

  7. You naughty boy, yes my mind went there! Your titles are like a wrapped gift, sometimes I open your blog and get what I want, sometimes socks!
Anyway this pair of socks were hilarious!!! "Been with my boyfriend three months and he don't even know my middle name" or the kid almost runs out into traffic, "oh that's one way to end a relationship"... really funny guys. Thanks for sharing, I don't even have television anymore so what's a Netflix... hahaha!
