Social distancing
I don’t know if you have seen the gif/video of a man in Italy walking around with a big circle around his waist. He’s taking social distancing quite literally. And I may do the same. You see, next week (and the weeks after that) I will be working from home, because the Illinois governor has declared a state of emergency and congregating in big numbers at this point is apparently a no-no. We are basically around twelve days behind Italy and on route to be in as bad a position as much of Europe if we don’t take drastic measures and flatten the curve of the epidemic. We could get to a point where there are too many people sick with the virus and they will overwhelm the health care system in America.
I work around and with tons of people every day but thankfully I’ll be working from home starting this week. I’m glad my institution has at last decided to do this. When the governor in Illinois closed all schools and prohibited crowds in restaurants and bars many people screamed bloody murder. And I understand that not everybody can work from home or remotely. I understand that many people have got to be in the frontlines of this pandemic so we can keep functioning as a civilized society. There’s also people who depend on jobs that are going to be terribly affected by this pandemic. But reducing social contact may be the only way we flatten the curve of contagion and avoid being in this situation for even longer. Not to mention risking the health of a loved one.
If you are on social media, you probably saw instagram and twitter denizens posting about going around crowded places this weekend and reassuring you about how much they are contributing to the economy. I think going to crowded spaces at this point is kind of irresponsible. We may be asymptomatic or healthy right now but that does not mean we cannot get infected and then pass it on to someone who has underlying conditions and that may get killed if they get infected. This can lead to hospitals being overwhelmed by patients and to a depletion of medical supplies and beds. I know, it makes me sound like we are in some kind of post apocalyptic movie. But apparently, that is our reality as of today.
We are in an emergency. I’m suspending my usually slutty stream of consciousness to kind of try and make you see why we should practice some social distancing from our own good. It’s going to be for just some weeks. Just avoiding crowded places and keeping our distance from others we don’t know may help flatten the curve. And it may help us get out of this pandemic sooner.
Funny, but not surprising that local governments are doing more to lower the curve than IMPOTUS. Cheeto only thinks about his numbers or how he can profit from situations. The Kakistocracy in which we live does not allow for planning for the county. Twitler is only thinking about how he looks while delivering disastrous speeches about the pandemic or if his properties would suffer from a haphazardly put together travel ban. We do not have a responsible government right now, only a bunch of psycophants telling their emperor that he is still wearing clothes.
So stay away from crowds for a few weeks. Don’t hookup with some hot stranger for a few weeks. Work from home if you can. Stay at home whenever you can. Read a book. Binge watch a tv series. Install Pluto in your Roku or Apple TV. Blog more. Marie Kondo your closet. Watch more porn. Whatever keeps you out of circulating around bunches of people will be ok. Help flatten the curve.

Oh. And wash your hands. Remember cleanliness is close to godliness. Especially now.
Stay safe!

Sage advice, indeed babe. The governor of Illinois has now ordered all bars and restaurants closed. Restaurants cannot have dine in service but can have drive-thru or curbside pick-up or delivery. I’m glad your finally working from home.
ReplyDeleteAs for me I will not be in the office the next two weeks but for other reasons. Monday thru Wednesday I’m busy with the primary election. Thursday and Friday for family health reasons and next week for the same reason. After that, who knows.
But we have to go with the flow and be safe and flexible. And you are flexible😘
XOXO 👨❤️💋👨
Yep. The governor of Illinois has taken swifter and more concise action than IMPOTUS.
DeleteHaha yep, I'm flexible.
XOXO
That video says it all.But I still hear people acting like it's no big deal, and while, for most of us it isn't life threatening, let's try to look out for one another.
ReplyDeleteI have the option of working from home, always have, and will probably do that most of the week. I just read that our little town in SC is the epicenter for coronavirus in the state; now, we only have 8 cases, but statewide there are only 12.
I'd rather be safe than sorry.
People are fools, Bob. Really.
DeleteAnd hopefully your town will recover soon and there's no fatalities. Fingers crossed!
XOXO
The Trump show should be canceled! Does anyone notice the 'bobbing heads' standing behind him during his great economy announcements. It drives me crazy!
ReplyDeleteI've certainly noticed the nodders. Thwy make themselves look like idiots - and they probably are.
DeleteThey're all terrified of him. He's a schoolyard bully and all of his yes men and women despise him behind his back. But they do nothing. All for a paycheck.
DeletePathetic.
XOXO
Glad you're able to work from home. My company has implemented working from home starting today, though they say it's for just two weeks (we'll see about that).
ReplyDeleteI'm not optimistic about how this will play out. Trump is hopeless. We, unlike Europe, have 30% of our population that will take his word over the word of scientists and doctors, and simply refuse to recognize the seriousness of the problem until it's too late. Self-isolating as much as possible is imperative. And it's going to be a bad time to need to go to a hospital for a "normal", non-covid-19-related emergency.
Hopefully you'll start working from home and the transition is smooth.
DeleteCheeto is a fool and is dragging the nation with him, that's obvious. Him and his followers are stupid beyond redemption.
Fingers crossed so there's no emergencies.
XOXO
I support the distance and it's important to stay safe, clean as often as possible and not touch our face with hands as much. I think it's better to be extra careful, you've got literally nothing to lose but, to gain a virus you don't need.
ReplyDeleteYou know what? The not touching my face is the most difficult part! Maybe it's because I have glasses and it becomes automatic to push them up when they fall forward...
DeleteYes to distance!
XOXO
as many of you know, I am Italian, from Milan. Currently Italy is the nation most afflicted by the coronavirus. Those who can stay at home are put in a position to work at home or on vacation. These quarantine obligations will last until approximately April 3. We will see later. Let's hope will be enough.
ReplyDeletePlease take care!
DeleteStay safe! Italy has bien hit hard. Gosh the stories coming out are incredible.
DeleteLet's hope the quarantine has curtailed the virus.
Keep us informed!
XOXO
This town has never shuttered - not even after 9/11. But they are now. One by one the properties are closing the doors, turning out the lights. But, sadly, they are letting people go; laid off, furloughed, or whatever you want to call it. They're being sent home without pay, without any guarantee of a job to return to. Now, that is cold-blooded.
ReplyDeleteI've seen lots of local Republicans calling the social distancing "ridiculous," laughing at others, and deliberately gathering in large groups - particularly older white women who still think this is the "hoax" that Cheeto called it weeks ago. I'm not a vindictive kind of person, but I wish them all a nice case of it - no, not death - just a very rough time with it.
I am trying to isolate myself (per surgeon's orders) in order to remain healthy enough for this upcoming surgery. So far it hasn't been canceled....but, I suppose if things get bad enough in S. Cal. they could cancel me to reserve (use) the bed for Covid-19 cases.
Stay well, everyone! xoxo
I hope your surgery proceeds as planned. Family member is in the same situation.
DeleteThat's right! You were going to have surgery! Hopefully it'll go well if they don't have to postpone it.
DeleteAnd it's heartless to let people go like that. And it's all businesses. So sad.
Those who still think it's a 'hoax' will at the end be the ones who keep this thing spreading. Idiots!
XOXO
Thank you, Huntley. Hope your family member doesn't get postponed - and has a very speedy recovery.
DeleteThank you Sixpence. Happy St. Patrick's Day. We laid in a good store of wine and other booze - that will help drown the sorrow if UCLA cancels. xoxo
That little video says it all! I'm glad I'm retired and don't have to deal with the work situation. I'm sure everyone at my former workplace will be working from home, since virtually all our work was done on computers anyway.
ReplyDeleteThat little video was eye opening!
DeleteAnd it's kind of a blessing to be able to work from home. Stay safe!!
XOXO
Yes fortunately I think Canada jumped faster out of the starting gate. We have 15 cases in Ottawa now and so far it's all connected to travel. The city has basically shut down. People have to understand this will not stop the virus it will only slow it down and in so doing will give the healthcare system time to handle the high number of patients. I'm hearing you guys could be in for an Italy repeat. Hopefully not.
ReplyDeleteCanada is acting quickly. And that's a good thing.
DeleteAnd the US started acting late because of the incompetence of IMPOTUS, more worried about his 'numbers' than the health of a country.
XOXO
spouse and I went to work; we have no contact with the public and we are in a less than 10 people/office. but the gov shut down the fucking LIQUOR STORES! how fucking insane is THAT!
ReplyDeletelol
DeleteHow dare they?
DeleteStockpiling on wine is part of quarantine!
XOXO
I found out today that my 'big box' store is considered essential... people need to buy their mulch, so until the state of PA locks down, I'll be heading in to work.
ReplyDeleteReally.
DeleteWell, at least the job is still there. Let's hope that people do improve their houses while they're quarantined.
XOXO
Besotes.
