Oh, Karl

Bisous.

XOXO

    1. And I’m back. A very interesting question. Someone like you, who has been in the US virtually all of your adult life, and existing in a culture so different than the one you grew up in, is quite a feat indeed.

With English being one of your, subsequent languages, because I know there are more than English and French, you are totally immersed in the language.

And when the US is fortunate to have people of other cultures bless our land with their language and customs, you get the knuckle dragging group screaming “speak English, it’s the official language of the country!” But it’s not. There is no official language of the US.

So yeah, I’m totally impressed when non-native English speakers can so fluidly express themselves in English.

    2. Haha. Remember there’s a ‘translate’ button at the bottom of the blog! I always cackle when people say ‘speak English damnit!’ It’s funny. It says more about them than me.

    1. I think so, too! He’s very cute as a boy. We tend to forget that most drag queens are well, men.

  4. Makin' me do homework first thing in the AM ... I could KILL you.

But, perhaps while Nikki's humor didn't translate ... and, to be sure,a lot of people would have played the 'Why she speakin' French' card ... , had she played up a wacky French character in some of those challenges, she may have gotten further. I think she got caught up in trying to be understood instead of just being herself. Which I think is sometimes the case with people in America whose first language is not English.
Carlos has lived her for longer than he lived in Mexico but he still has a way of saying things that isn't quite the Queen's English, but is that queen's English.
    And I like the difference.
Plus, let us not forget she was kinda funny and comical in the work room so she could do funny.

And I agree. Being herself would have been so much cooler! Like she’s in the video: poised, witty, fun. She was awesome in the work room and the confessionals!
And I’d love to have a kiki with Carlos!

  5. I don't think Nicky Doll's issue involved speaking in a second language. Her English is excellent. The issue was that she comes from a different drag culture that doesn't emphasize camp and humour as much as American drag does. So she just doesn't have the same amount of experience in that particular aspect as the other queens, and it showed. But she is gorgeous and certainly comes across as a very nice and pleasant person.

    1. Oh her English is excellent. It was more like you say, the translation of the culture: both drag and French. Besides, humor and most times wit is tightly wound with culture and language. Case in point: Heidi in Closet. That child opens her mouth and I’m howling.
Nicky’s goodbye was a lesson in class.

  6. I'll have to save that for another time.... But, the whole "why don't you speak English" thing irritates me. I always want to respond, "Why don't YOU learn (insert any language here - sometimes even English, for Christ sake!). I am in awe of those who can speak more than one language and I wish I had kept up with my Spanish and French. xoxo

Remember the blog translates for you (or chrome, if your browser is chrome). But yeah. Learning another language is fun. It also helps with memory and to keep Alzheimer’s away...

    2. Ah, uh-huh. Right on. Though we present different selves to different people in different circumstances all the time. Idioms from one culture to another is what makes it most difficult to translate one's native tongue into a second language. Bravo! xoxo

  7. I agree with you on the language thing. Most European countries...many residents know two languages. Just do. I took four years of French, the word, not the men cutie, that's ANOTHER story. Do you think I remember much of it? Some basics and that's it. Now I never met Nicky. I had always heard good things, and she by far had the best grasp of English from a foreign queen to be on the show. I didn't see a win and took flack for rating her so high to leave. I loved her, but I got a huge French version of Miss Fame, which is a huge compliment as Miss Fame is a stunning goddess. I see Nicky going on to big things. I think at this point in the shows run, the judges are looking for something different, which is why I think the show is getting maxed. There are only so many forms of drag....and queens like Juno Birch , Porcelain, and Yovska, would be cool...but could never be on there because there whole personality is built around there style. And if I was Juno and had to listen to Michelle's remarks, I 'd slap that whore! Ru already has her gallery of fine and unique queens. Why not just do a drag show for entertainment. We KNOW who would have had tied this show up...no question. Ru herself wanted another camp , comedy queen. What a shame, she could have been the first big queen to win too. I'm sure Gigi will take this now. And that Jackie is so fucking adorable!!!! I want him in my bed right now!!!!! But I have gotten Nicky's ticket for dragfest, so I can see a first hand show.

    2. Haha Oh lala! French men are the bomb!
And I also got that Miss Fame vibe from Nicky! She’s so poised and cool. And she gives FACE.
I will have to agree with your assessment of RPDR. They do promote drag, but -and it’s not a small butt- they sometimes keep a strict definition of what’s CUNT or not. I hope it branches out into something that centers more in the uniqueness of drag,

  9. Oh my, she speaks very fast... really fast, and I almost understood everything. I need fire up my Rosetta stone and get a little practice in. The reason we don't learn more than one language in this country is because we expect everything to be translated into English. Translations miss so much.

You should hit RS on the regular. Remember, if we don’t use it....
And I think America is very monolithic and very ... comfortable with the idea that many people do speak English.
Translations miss that inner spark languages have.
