Mask, Gloves, Soap, Scrubs ...

You know queer artists are gonna grab the zeitgeist by the throat and get away with murder while looking fab and camping it up to high heavens. You also know they're going to give a spin to whatever it is that they do to make it very 'it'. What I found fascinating with these videos is that Todrick Hall managed to spoof himself while bringing faggotry to the forefront. And that's quite the feat, given how campy he already is.

I also find quite telling that both videos (the original and the COVID-19 PSA) manage to skew the obsession some gay men have with masculinity (or what they think being masculine is) by subverting the gaze in both videos and using gay slang (hunty, slay, puss puss, shade, etc) to deliver a 'She Works Hard for the Money' message that is much more evident in the original than in the spoof, but that it still translates. You see, some people think that doing drag is 'easy' and not hard work. They think it's just putting on a wig and heels and prance around a stage. Nothing further than the truth. I'd say doing drag requires, apart from the make up and costuming artistry, to be quite physical. Dancing on heels on a stage five nights a week does require stamina.

There's also the idea that 'fem' men are weaklings. As it has been the theme lately (see Sam Smith's How do you Sleep) incredibly skilled dancers have shed the need to appear macho at all costs in order to let their talent as artists shine. It does take gumption and strength to do that drop in heels, honey. Or to dance in heels at all. Being feminine does not take away from powerful performances. Ginger Rogers did everything Fred Astaire did. Only backwards and in heels. Think about it for a second.

I can almost hear the Masc4Masc crowd scream from the back: HE DOES NOT REPRESENT ME!!! Take a seat, Mary. He's representing himself. Well, himself and the thousands of sissy boys who will go through life tearing down obstacles so you can have that -very masculine- Adonis on Grindr eat your ass without having the police tearing down your bedroom door and taking you to the nearest police station. Some people have yet to accept that Fem guys are the first line in the defense for visibility and gay rights. They are the ones who get the burnt of the attacks both from society at large and by other gay men. Oh, yes, there's the picket fence gays who get in their Banana Republic knees to suck dick in back alleys but they can also be vicious because the Fairies will just not stop mincing around. The fight for heteronormativity is ongoing. The struggle is real.

And back to Todrick. So he spoofed himself and created a campy, witty, fun rump of a video with the help of some friends and allies. Because thanks to some queens back in the day nowadays we do not have to read between the lines to get the gay subtext. There's a gay text to be read by whomever is able to do that. It's not transparent, mind you (even Mr. Shife in Idaho will be able to read it) but opaque. Gay lingo still exists (sorry to the Banana Republic gays) and it's alive and kicking. Thanks to Paris is Burning there's always a whole new generation that can appreciate the lingo, because it's the fem gays, the fairies, the sissies, who have kept that part of the culture alive and high kicking.

So the Mask, Gloves, Soap, Scrub plays nicely along Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels and it manages to pack so many references to the pandemic and the moment that I had to listen twice to get them. It's also an ode to the resilience and inventiveness of the gay community. Drag queens and queer artists are now broadcasting from their living rooms and adapting to the moment while keeping their creativity and sharp wit intact. Quarantine Queens indeed.

Hands on your knees for me, your knees for me..

XOXO

Oh, in case you were wondering, the kids are all right...

Those two boys at the beginning? Yes, please. TAKE MY MONEY!

  1. Todrick is super creative. And his take off on his original work is golden. And you have to admire the work in editing this together. It’s tough enough when you’re just splicing together take after take. But when you have people in different locations all sending in scenes that will appear on screen together...syncing that is truly remarkable.

This was a fun romp much needed these days.

And you’re right about the fem in the community. They’re the toughest out there. They are the most attacked but they should he the most thanked.

    1. He is super creative! And has a good sense of humor.
I was also wondering about the actual editing of the whole thing, with choreo and all. Lots of work.
The gay community does need to work on their attitude....

  2. I'd seen them both before, though prefer the one with multiple dancers.

    1. I had never seen the COVID-19 spoof. I thought it was hysterical and on point. The original's choreo is really cool. Super cool moves.

  3. I love both videos; great, yet different, messages in each,
And while Todrick may not represent all of us, he represents some of us; and, seriously, the LGBTQ+ community could stand a little more inclusion. We have enough 'others' trying to tear us down, why should our own community join that?

    1. I know! Who knew that videos that are super campy could pack a punch?
And we do need more inclusion. The comments on some blogs are just appalling. Appalling!

  4. We caught the 2nd episode of "We're Here," this one in Twin Falls, Idaho. See, teaching the world that drag isn't easy, that drag, while it can be fun and campy, isn't all about mincing around the stage, but basically that gay isn't "contagious."
Last night, we started watching "Hollywood." Quite, quite good thus far. Episode 2 introduces Rock Hudson's discovery and how his agent (Jim Parsons) taught him to present as ultra masculine in order to become a star. Hey, we've come a long way, baby.

    1. It's a fun show with a different bent. It does take confidence to go into some parts of the country in full drag. Even in 2020. Did you see some of the faces? And who knew there was such a vibrant queer community? The grandpa did me in.
And Jimmy (and Maddie) have commented on Hollywood. It's in my queue!

  5. I love him! The original was played a lot at Ptown and the Woods last summer. I think I did my own runway to it. And don't get me started. Your line "Masc4Masc crowd scream from the back: HE DOES NOT REPRESENT ME!!! Take a seat, Mary. He's representing himself. Well, himself and the thousands of sissy boys who will go through life tearing down obstacles so you can have that -very masculine. HERE HERE! The only thing they down quick, is a fucking protein shake. when a punch comes to a shove or a punch, they run like pussies!!!!! Now WERK! OWN IT. WERK IT, BUT DON'T WRECK IT! I don't dance, I WERK!

    1. Oh I can imagine the fun! And Maddie, I can just see you pointing and walking with this one!
And I had to LOL at the protein shake comment. I think that some people in the LGBTQ community have a lot to learn from some of the guys they call 'sissies'.
      They don't dance, they WERK!

  6. Oh and your right about the heels thing. After years of wearing 5" it what I attribute my toned legs too. And most boy love my gams. I sometime still wear them around the house to keep used to them...just in case.

    1. They're both super fun and campy. He obviously does not take himself too seriously, while at the same time, takes advantage of his platform to lift parts of the community that are not usually lifted. Werk!
