Fool me twice

I read my first 007 novel way before I was able to legally go see a James Bond movie. I got into reading early, so I guess it was bound to happen. I imagine it always happens to people who start reading early: they found out about things that take their peers a few years more to realize or learn about. My mom used to read paperbacks, hardcovers, the lot. I mostly remember her with a book in her hand when I was a child. She used to read us bedtime stories. She belonged to many book clubs. She read most everything, from world lit to bodice rippers. I used to go with her to buy books. I imagine that's why I've always been a bookworm. Less so now, what with Netflix providing so much bingeable entertainment and with most of my books being in my tablet.

So, James Bond. Once, when I was twelve or thirteen, I was housesitting for one of my older cousins. She had recently gotten married to a Marine and they were traveling, so I stayed in her house once or twice a week until they came back. That's when I read my first Ian Fleming book. It was an old paperback, it had those super-saturated colors book covers used to have way back then (Hey, Upton!) and some pretty woman in some kind of danger. It had seen better days, too. That book had been read, honey. But I thought the cover was awesome and the idea of reading the adventures of a spy was super cool, from my point of view. I wanted to know more about that 007 guy.

I don't really remember which was that first book I read. Was it Dr. No? Goldfinger? I know James got it on with somebody and that people died either eaten by piranhas or burned by lava. I have no idea. What I do know is that he had several 007 books. I went through his collection like water. The idea of a suave, handsome, sexy, daring and absolutely rogue secret agent was a fantastic premise. I wanted a boyfriend like that! I was hooked. I think the fact that the descriptions of his womanizing sounded risqué to me only added to the allure. So that's why George liked those books, huh? That's what pumped up Marines read? Sweet.

To date, I have read most 007 books authored by Fleming. And I have seen most the Bond movies. I have watched many on TV and on the streaming services. My favorite James Bond on the screen are Sean Connery and Daniel Craig. George Lazenby gets honorary mention (swoon!). Every year, for the last ten years or so, going to see the new Bond movie has always been an event. This year I may not be able to see Daniel Craig in all his glory on a big screen. Damn pandemic.

But I'm already hooked on the theme song. I love Billie's voice. Hopefully, I'll be able to see this in a theater sometime soon? I have not been to a movie theater since March. This is one of those times I wish drive in-theaters were still a thing.

XOXO

  1. There’s a bit of sadness in the delay of the last Daniel Craig Bond movie. Cineworld, the UK based parent of Regal Theaters here in the US, announced they were closing all of their theaters until 2021. That’s going to put some 28,000 people out of work. And those aren’t high paying jobs where the people have a cushy stockpile of cash to fall back on.

I’ve seen a few of the Bond films, but I think my favorite was Goldfinger. Maybe it has to do with the idea of someone breaking into Fort Knox and getting away with all that gold. Or maybe it was Odd Job’s deadly hat.

Though I don’t go to as many movies as you, I do miss the experience. Chalk up another casualty of the government’s handling of the pandemic.

    1. Sad about the Regal cinemas right? I saw that yesterday. The company that owns the dinner style ones may shutter too I hear. My little two house movie theater isn't even open yet. Hanging by a thread it is... they get all the independent and arty films too.

    2. Ohh I read about that!
The pandemic fucked up so many things that we lose count of the casualties. So sad.
And Goldfinger was fun! Sean Connery! Flying hats!

I miss going to the movies. I miss my cheap Tuesday date with some popcorn and the big screen.

  2. For Your Eyes Only. My first bond movie and I never looked back. I'm even a fan of Timothy Dalton who I thought was a fine Bond even if the scripts to his movies sucked. I've been looking forward to the last of Daniel Craig's films – for me he is the best Bond yet. He's taken the franchise to an all time high. I shall miss him after this adventure.

    1. Ohh Didn't Sheena Easton sing the theme song?
Timothy Dalton was soooooo very handsome! But I agree with you: Daniel Craig has revived the franchise. He said this is his last Bond movie, right?

Oh, I love Bond movies. Action thrillers and sci-fi are my thing.
I don't have any of the books, mind you. It would be fun to re-read them.

You're more than welcome. When he came out of the water in that square cut I had to hold on to the seat at the movie theater. Damn!

  5. I've always enjoyed the films - the books, not so much. But I am a very voracious reader. Always have been, like you, since an early age. My mom had to go in with me to tell the librarian I could take out any book I wanted. You see, the librarian was denying me books (too many, above my age level). Best Bond in film: Sean, of course! Daniel does fine, though....
Sadly, Regal has announced worldwide shut down again - until sometime next year. AMC may not be far behind. If there are to be Oscars, they will be virtual. And, they best start releasing them for streaming - at a decent price, though, for fuck sake! LOL XOXO

    1. Isn't reading fun?
And the same happened with me! I was reading 'adult' books way before I turned eighteen. My mom never said anything, so it was never an issue. Sean Connery WAS James Bond. God, he was yummy.
I hope AMC and Regal survive. Some small chains (Marcus Theaters, hometown indie movie houses) may not be so lucky. I have not been to a movie since March. I don't think I'll be going back any time soon. Too scared.
And isn't streaming a little too little?

    2. Yes, we should fear for the indie houses. They will be the first to fold permanently.

Streaming is definitely too little for some films.... You need the big screen and the big sound for some. xoxo

  6. I think The Spy Who Loved Me was my first. I was in love with that theme song, written by Carole Bayer Sager... can't remember who did the music. Anyhoo... never a big fan. I don't like the casual misogynism and all the gimmicky crap. But that's me. As for Billie... time will tell. She's a very good songwriter. Her performance style? It has a shelf date.

    1. Ohhh Yes!
Was it Carly Simon? And I think it was Roger Moore? With that beautiful Bond girl, who was a model? And Ian Fleming's books are a little bit dated in that respect. I love the gizmos, though LOL.
I like Billie. I have one of her albums and I love her style. I think she's very young and we have not seen everything she can do.

  7. Bond movies are ridiculous, of course. My fave is "Skyfall." Do you have any thoughts on who should be "the new Bond?" Apparently the current frontrunner is Tom Hardy.

      Absolutely ridiculous. I love them!!!
Skyfall was awesome. Javier Bardem was chilling as the villain. Don't they say that a movie is as good as its villain? And didn't Adele sing the theme?
Oh, I've read it could be Tom Hardy (yum!) or Idris Elba (double yum!). I'd be happy with either.

  9. I too enjoy the films. And each actor brought some unique something to the part... But for my Daniel Craig is my favorite. And I will never forget when Craig's clothes were ripped off him and Le Chiffe played by the equally sexy Mads Mikklesen in Casino Royale, tied him to that chair and whipped his balls. I was never so turned on seeing a Bond movie. The things I'd done to that man tied to that chair!!!!!!!!!!!! I also enjoy he and Judi Dench's dynamic together in Skyfall. Never read the books.

I also love that the villainess names are also drag queen sounding.

Haha that scene in Casino Royale gave me pause to think. Daniel Craig looks fantastic in a tuxedo, but the man naked? Oh LaLa!
Judy Dench is fantastic. And what do you make of Pussy Galore? LOL

  10. I only read one: "You Only Live Twice." The book was better than the movie, I thought. I didn't watch a single James Bond movie after Sean Connery left the series... that was until Daniel Craig started playing 007.

    1. Well, Fleming was a proficient writer. And some of the Bond movies lack a little in substance. They went for the flash on some.
I've seen/watched all the Bond movies. I like Connery very much, but yes. Craig is fantastic. The man is like a caged leopard.

  11. We have a few dollar theaters around here showing some old movies but nothing new.
I never read the books but I have seen most of the Bond movies.
Roger Moore was my first 007.
I was little too young for Sean Connery's run as the secret agent.
We were hoping to go to a drive-in on our vacation but we were too late.
I really do miss watching movies at the theater, Sixpence.

    1. I have not been to a movie theater in months, Mr. Shife.
I don't even know if there's any open nearby. The risk is too big right now, even with the cleaning and whatnot.
I've watched all the Bond movies. There's a ton right now on Hulu. Netflix has some and does Apple. You have got to watch one of Sean Connery's Bond movies. Dr. No or Goldfinger would be my go-to.
Oh, I wanted so much to go to a drive-in, but the only one in the Chicago area is way too far from where I live now. I also miss going to the movies a lot.

  12. I have seen some of the movies, met a few retired CIA agents over the years - life is not nearly that fun for most of them. (Living were I live, probably know a few active spies.)

I can imagine that being a spy really is not that glamorous. It's a job after all, right? And I also think it's dangerous. The Russians never went away.
