P.S. I learned about Kwanzaa many years ago, when I was working as an assistant to the Outreach Coordinator at Pitt. It was then that I visited Miller, an African-Centered academy that was part of the Outreach program and that experience changed many of my ideas about race and social constructs. Until that day, I had never heard of anybody who celebrated Kwanzaa. Learning about it totally changed my outlook about how other people celebrate the holidays. If you'd like to learn more about Kwanzaa, try GLAAD's page. You can also support Black-owned businesses in your community.

Also, D'Angelo. Need I say more?

  1. I learned about Kwanzaa many years ago from the comic strip "Dykes To Watch Out For" -- there was a bi-racial lesbian couple who celebrated it.

  3. Learned about it many years ago. Don't care for the music, but OMG he's ripped and buff, ain't he? Can we assume that he's having a hands-free orgasm at that point in the video? More power to ya, D!! XOXO

He indeed looks amazing here. And I believe somebody IS taking care of his needs. I can't believe they got away with this on MTV.

  4. I've been having beautiful dreams about Brian McKnight for some reason. D'Angelo is hot, but Krave is at the top of my list. I don't know anyone that celebrates Kwanzaa.

    1. ps, the song is very reminiscent of Prince.

    2. Yes! Brian McKnight! Haven't heard from him in awhile.
And I have to confess that I know about Krave cause Madonna did a song with him. Hot as well.
And yes, this song came out in that wave of Neo-Soul that sounded so nostalgic, so it's not strange that you hear Prince in the mix.

  6. Of all my friends of color, I only have one that celebrates it. When I first heard about Kwanzaa which was probably in the 90s....I was all curious....and then dismayed when none of my friends of color told me they didn't partake ...some didn't even know really what it was.

    1. Isn't that sad?
I think history has been so whitewashed that people are not aware of their own roots. It has to do with how we perceive culture at large. It does not surprise me at all what you have told us...

  8. my newspaper has been writing about different Black-owned businesses in philly & the burbs. I found one who makes wine, another who makes candles, another who sells yarn. THESE are the kinds of businesses I can support! and I do need to learn more about kwaanza; off to learn!

    1. That's so cool!
People would be surprised how many small businesses need this kind of support. It's so rewarding to buy from local businesses instead of just heading to Costco or Wal-mar!

    1. Oh, it's a relatively new holiday.
You'd be surprised to know how many people are not aware of it.

  10. Alas, I’m not up to snuff on the celebration, but I had heard about it many years ago. Maybe that’s a good thing, as I don’t believe it has been over commercialized, unlike Christmas.

And if D’Angelo is the fifth gift, I can’t wait for Day 7!

    1. No, it's not widely commercialized.
Which is kind of good, in this age and time when everything has dollar signs attached to it.
      And D'Angerlo IS a gift!
