Being gay in Russia is almost a death sentence. The Russian government forbids any kind of information about LGBTQ people being distributed to ‘young people’. Even the slightest suspicion of something being remotely LGBTQ or LGBTQ friendly is squashed immediately. In a country like that, Here I Come is a rarity and a blessing. And I think it deserves to be watched by the world.

I am not going to tell you how it goes. I'd rather you watch it. Because the more eyes we get into these little snippets of queer life in Russia, the better. It's nine episodes averaging five minutes. And you'll need the subtitles in English. Because unless you speak fluent Russian, you'll have to hit that CC button. Happy watching!

XOXO

P.S. it may require for you to be logged on google because it was flagged 18+ to bypass the bigots. Yeah, you didn't believe it was hard for a queer-themed web series to get to where Here I Come has gotten?

  1. The saddest thing about making gay illegal is that people have to stay hidden and that is so damaging to their psyche. Sure, there are some outlets, but they are few and far between and hidden as well, so you feel even more alone.
2021. And we're seriously still demeaning sexual orientation.

    1. I agree. The closet destroys lives. Staying hidden because your life depends on it should be soul crushing. But it's religion, the constant boogieman, that forces these laws. Orthodoxy is poison.

  2. Being behind that Iron Curtain is pretty damn frightening. Seriously. I was there. And, don't let anyone tell you it's any different now than it was in the days before Gorbachev. Putin quashes anything considered "Western" - that's his goal, his ambition. That he'd make being gay illegal (again) shouldn't surprise anyone. That's one reason why the idiots on the extreme right calling the Dem's socialists and communists piss me off. They don't have a fricking clue what those terms mean. XOXO

    1. Oh, I cannot imagine.
Putin has a pathological hatred for anything 'Western' while craving it. It's textbook crazy. And it's also typical strongman. The idea that there's anything but a hint of socialism light in some ideas in America is laughable.

  3. Nyet, Nyet, Nyet! To all Ruskis ; straight, gay, male or female. I have been associated with Russians most of my adult life through my husband and no. The mentality and social cultural behavior is most distasteful. And it has been bred into them since early Stalin. I have met all levels of Russians from PHDs to telephone repair guys. They all possess the same trait of connivers. I have to pass on this series.

    1. Oh, the Russians.
You can take the Russians from behind the iron curtain but you cannot take the darkness out of the Russian. I agree. It's part of their psyche, I guess, at this point.
But I think that the series has value. These people risked their lives to film it. Literally.

  6. Just watched it. 👍🏻 It's sad, it's 2021. for God's sake! 🙄 But, I gotta believe things will be changing over there in the future, as well. Slowly, but surely.

But you know that Russia and many other countries that see Russia as a model will not budge easily. They resent any effort from the world to make them join the XXI century..

  7. Putin is a terrible, terrible man. Russia is one big F'd country. And if you think for a moment that the U.S. is so far beyond becoming what they are? If our economy collapses? We will be right where they are. It is literally the only thing preventing the U.S. from being a failed nation. Granted, people like Bill Gates, would never allow that to happen. But there are not enough of 'him' to prevent us from becoming just like 'them'. Thanks for sharing. You. You're a good egg, kid. You got a good heart. :) Kizzes..

And you are right. All those MAGAts are all for totalitarianism. Dear Leader was a perfect example of what this country would be with an idiot like Cheeto in the White House. Go figure what somebody like Putin would do at the helm.

      Aww, Upton! You're too sweet!

  8. Oh man. It hit close to home. I met and dated a Russian guy when I worked at our NJ location. He was so sexy and his angry accent always got me turned on. Vatali was here for several years before returning to Russia, the last month before retuning he stayed with me. It was sad to see him go. Once back we corresponded and he told me how bad it was for the LGBT there. He and his family were going to try to get to the US, but I know some elder members were not in good health, and then there was the cost. As modern as the country is in some ways, he said the LGBT rights and acceptance was wayyyyyy behind many other countries. After two years of letters and emails came to a halt. I have not heard since. I sure hope he is alright Vatali was so full of life, very mischievous, tall and lanky, and a sly grin. I don't know Ill watch the video. I still have the letters and cards he sent. Maybe once I'm gone, someone will try to piece it all together.

That's quite the story! So sad that he had to go back. But it happens more often than not. And It IS hard for LGBTQ people in Russia. As much as they try to cover it, news get out of the horrible conditions in which they live.
I also hope Vatali is all right. Damn this is heavy.

  9. It’s appalling that in this day and age so many “modern” societies can be so oppressive. And it’s not like in theocratic countries where an old book is the law of the land. Though I guess Vlad has the Russian church under his thumb too.

    Fuck them all!

And you know what? The MAGAts would LOVE this kind of regulations. Love it. Funny how little control such people would want. They crave a strongman.

  12. beautiful story. We all know that Orthodox countries are very homophobic (not only Russia) . A little less than Islam. It will still take decades. Homosexuality will eventually be accepted by them too, but it will take a long time. I am optimistic about the result, pessimistic about the time.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. And that's true!
Any theocracy or rigidly religious country will be homophobic. They are by default very patriarchal and very stifling of any kind of sexual expression. And I agree with you: pessimistic about the timeline but optimistic about the results.
