MONTERO
"So in the beginning when they were cut in two, they yearned for each other’s half"
So, when was the last time you were aware a recording artist was quoting Plato's Symposium in the same song where he was talking about boning someone and at the same time, recreating the Garden of Eden and hell? Well, if it's been only a few weeks for you, you're lucky. When Lil' Nas X came up with Montero (Call Me By Your Name) it was the first time I saw all these things together. For real. And I'm a better gay for it.
Yeah, i know it's not the kind of song for everybody, but the video is sick. I secretly laugh (well, not secretly) when people miss out on something because of their ‘likes’. Like the masc 4 masc crowd. Their loss. The video and the song kind of go together. It looks like LilNasX has a vision and is able to execute it. Apparently, the video is meant to represent his fighting his attraction for men and coming out true to himself at the end. It’s a struggle for many. After LilNasX posted the video for Montero, he did a follow up with a post on Instagram talking about his motivation to have created the track:
The Montero LilMasX is talking about is himself. Montero is his given name and in the song he talks about a man he had an affair with but the guy was in the closet (oh, yes, THAT kind of situation). The note is written to his younger self, a reminder to himself that things do get better and that the closet is a prison. Montero also seems to be the land in which the video for the song takes place, a place that is going to make many a zealot unhappy. Mission: accomplished. After the video dropped Twitter was fucking AFLAME with religiosity and its side effect: pearl clutching. LittleNasX knows how to use the ten million combined followers he has on Twitter and Instagram for his benefit. The kid is all right. (Please notice that between taking that screenshot and posting this entry, that Instagram post has amassed more than six hundred thousand likes, which is not too shabby).
By harnessing the power of social media, LilNasX has managed to write the script on his own musical production and deliver the message he wanted to deliver: the closet is toxic and living his life as he sees fit is nobody's business but his. Also, his song has been streamed more than twenty eight million times, has been liked more than 1.4 million times on youtube and is on the top five on iTunes. Not shabby for the out singer who has broken records before with Old Town Road, no? The closet is not what it used to be, let's say, fifty years ago.
In the video he is Adam AND the snake. He wrestles with himself. He then visits ancient Rome, where he is judged and killed. He dies and goes to heaven and then falls from grace. He falls to hell in a stripper pole sporting fantastic hair and thigh-high boots and a pair of Calvins. And nothing else. Once in hell (he teases the religulous with a 'well, they all want the gays in hell and when a gay man goes to hell, they complain!). Once in hell, he gives Satan a lap dance before killing him and taking his horns. How's that for a journey?
Also, LilNasX has BDE. And for the sight of those Calvins, in more ways than one. We could have that jet lag from fuckin' and flyin' and he could shoot a kid in my mouth while he's ridin' any day.
Well, one thing is for sure: It's a different closet than it was 50 years ago. 50 years ago, he would've been dropped - by everyone. He'd have been lucky to find work stocking shelves in the middle of the night. Being Black? He'd be lucky to remain alive even more so than a white man. Remember, early on in his career, even Elton had to tell people it was just "a schtick" to get noticed. Now, we CAN promise young people that it will get better. With the help of straight dudes like Dan Reynolds of Imagine Dragons - it might even be true. XOXO
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely.
DeleteAnd that's something that escapes many people. When a Queer artist makes a statement, the intersectionality of it escapes many people. They only focus on the glitzy surface. It takes thinking to SEE what it is that was intended or achieved by the artist to understand the total effect of the product they've put out.
The kids will be all right.
And now you've made me wanna watch Rocketman again, Big! LOL
XOXO
While you're at it, check out Dan Reynolds' latest LGBTQ+ charity project, Encircle. Send them a few bucks, if you can. XOXO
DeleteHe deserves all kinds of props for sticking to his guns and creating the video HE wanted. Is it for everyone? Hell no. But it's for him and every gay person who has come out and every gay person who hasn't.
ReplyDeleteAnd the visuals are stunning. And those briefs and boots. Yes ma'am.
I know, right?
DeleteThis is a 'new' artist. You just KNOW somebody advised him against doing this 'for his own good'. But he was right. It was not only for him that he did it and I applaud him for it.
Also, thank you for noticing the briefs. And the boots. I knew I was not alone....
XOXO
FINALLY, someone wrote about this video. I mean,...22 million views in 48 hours! This was historic on many levels.
ReplyDeleteBetween Lil Nas X and the Tina documentary, it was a wonderful weekend.
it's a marvellous video!
DeleteHahaha
DeleteYou probably knew I was gonna do it. And it's up to 42 mil now. Many a 'mainstream' act would love to do that . I hope he monetized it.
And I have that Tina documentary in my queue! Love her!
XOXO
Interesting song, though I think the visuals drown out his message because they're so stridently shocking.
ReplyDeleteAnd you have hit the nail in the head.
DeleteRemember that recording artists now need to count in many kinds of revenue: physical and electronic sales and streaming. His creating this video brings the people who want to watch it and the streaming gets the people who want to listen to the song. Win/Win.
Not the first artist to do this, of course. Rock and Roll acts have courted Satan for decades.
XOXO
Great song! Great video!
ReplyDeleteThe song is super witty and catchy. I see another hit.
DeleteAnd the video is fun, irreverent and beautiful.
What else is there to ask for?
XOXO
I am so glad I have lived long enough to see this! WOAH! HAWT. And expensive. That all looks really, really expensive. Worth it. This needs to be supported. Oh... did you hear about all the controversy re: his Satan Sneakers? Stupid AZZ preachers all up in arms. Let 'em flap their wings. It ain't gonna fly. But this song... it sure do. Flies like a joyous spirit. Love the whole vid... but the ending? Priceless. Thanks for sharing this, hon. I am in LURVE.
ReplyDeleteI know!
DeleteIt does look expensive and well thought: the make up, the costumes, the CGI wizardry. And I did hear about the sneakers. They didn't say anything when they came up with the Holy Water ones, though. Huntley just texted me that they sold out. LOL Love it.
And that ending was fantastic!
XOXO
I'm far from a fan of his...but I loved his Holiday video. He seems to be a very visual person too. I love when a music video uses a lot of visual theatrics. To be visual, and tell a story, with a message, and pull off all three...he does it beautifully.
ReplyDeleteYes!
DeleteThe holiday video gave us a taste of his vision. This one brings it more home than the other. The references alone would make it worth watching. I loved the costuming and the makeup. I cannot imagine how many hours he spent on a makeup chair being transformed into so many versions of himself.
He did pull it off. And I'm humming that damn song! LOL
XOXO
What he has done here is EPIC! He pulled out all the stops. The imagery is on point and he gets his story across.
ReplyDeleteThis is one f’ing hot video by one f’ing hot dude.
XOXO 👨❤️💋👨
I know!
DeleteHe has a message for the wingnuts and it's loud and clear.
And he looks fantastic. Those Calvins, am I right?
XOXO
