HYBRIDS -

Maddie was writing about Earth Day and I realized that if we want to have a healthy planet by the end of these next few decades, we're going to have to try and make Earth Day more than just one day of the year. I know, I'm preaching to the choir. Not like you are the garden variety xtianist who does not 'believe' in Global Warming (it's a dire situation, though, if you go state by state) but believes in a Sky Daddy who watches you jerk off, right? But still, this short film brought to mind why is it that I worry about polluting the land and the waters we depend on and the little things I do for the planet. I don't do much, but I recycle, I try not to use too much plastic, I have planted several trees, I upcycle my clothes and I have chosen all my cars by their fuel economy. When I grow up, I'll get a Prius.

And I do all these things because I think that one person can make a small difference. Of course the government can do much more, and after four years of the pillaging of natural resources by IMPOTUS2 and his minions, having Uncle Joe do some good has been really welcome. Here are some:

1. Rejoining the Paris Climate Agreement
2. Creating a presidential advisor council on science, technology and innovation.
3. Launching the Climate innovation working group to promote green energy
4. Convened 40 world leaders to re-establish America's leadership when addressing climate change
5. Pledging to slash US greenhouse emissions in half by July 2030.

But there's still so much  more we can do. We can listen to people who know what they're talking about. And I believe we should listen to Indigenous Peoples. They were here before the Pilgrims arrived. They KNOW the land.

I know some people may think that doing a little for the environment is an exercise in futility, but I am an optimist: I think that even the little things I do around my house and in my life can make a difference. How do you think all these fantastic people I mentioned here started? And the thing is, if I can make one or two of you think about the environment, I'd consider this post was successful. If you actually DO something to improve the environment around you, my job will be done. Because you may inspire someone else to do something.

And no, I don't do this because I have children who will inherit a barren land or who will not know animals that fifty years ago were plentiful or who will not be able to enjoy some fantastic places because they will be under five feet of water.  No, I do it for the planet. I do it for other people's children and their children. I do it because deep down, I care.

XOXO

  1. One person doing a little something IS futile, but 7billion people doing something is a great thing.

    1. Absolutely.
It seems simple, right? Something that could be done? What drives me mad is how people do not really understand this.

  3. Interesting. I recently came to the conclusion that it makes no sense, at this point in our development, to have a gas/oil car. The technology is established... electric cars are the way to help save our planet. But not just that... also the whole green deal is a marvelous idea. We need not fear it. Yes, it is change. Texans lose their power base - oil is no longer king. And I know old industries have a hard time letting go... but we need to kick their fingertips from the ledge and let them fall by the way. Solar power is the future. Air power. It all utilizes existing things to create what we are currently relying on oil to do. So, yes... we need to wake up and do our part. F oil! Grow up, America. Embrace the new. Thanks for posting this, Sixpence. Kizzes.

    1. I agree.
Fossil fuels are a finite resource. The sooner people realize that, the better. Gas economy has been the keyword when looking for a car for years. But there's a lot of money at stake: oil companies are not going to let go of their cash cow that easily.
I guess it's up to us, as consumers to show the way...

    1. Well, if we could now convince people to do the same...
It's just so maddening that we would have to explain the why so often!

  6. That video was both disturbing and fascinating.

Yes we need to do more. And doing ANYTHING is better than nothing. We all can do a little and then build on that. Like Bob said, the numbers add up.

    1. I thought it was incredible.
It somehow gave a view to a future that may not be as radical, but that can be as scary. And we can all do our part. As I said, if I can make somebody think about it, I would have done something...

  7. First off, the video is terrific. Second, you are correct. Every little thing we do can add up to big things. We went solar at our house as soon as it was available in our area. We've been recycling for two decades. Our landscape is desert-drought tolerant. Before anyone says, "but, the pool!" The pool uses less water annually than a home without a pool but has grass. We drive very little anymore. A 2011 Versa has 27k miles. A 2001 Xterra has 117k miles. Those may be small things, but if each of us does this we make progress. XOXO

    1. OMG Big.
Such a good idea! Going solar is such a plus! Some people even start offsetting their energy bill at some point. Same with using only local plants in our gardens. It's what I've been trying to do in my little mulch pad. If only more people would realize how much water they put into their lawns...
And small things count. Especially if there's a lot of us doing them.

  8. Oh I so believe that one person can make a difference. Like you, I chose my car because it's a hybrid and because it does save on gas etc. If I could afford to, I would have gone electric.

    1. I'd love to have a hybrid car!
I looked at the smaller Prius, but it was still expensive when I was buying my little hooptie. But I'll get there. I think I'd really enjoy getting fifty and sixty miles per gallon.

  9. All I can say is it's a good thing I'm not Mother Nature or a Poison Ivy-ish character....Man kind would be in far more shit now then it is, and would be dealing with revenge after revenge from me, till they get it right. The planet , environment and animals are a huge passion with me. So, I most times find it very hard to get upset and shed tears when anything disaster befalls humans, who can only take and take and take, tear up more land for development, and get over populated, and pollute and trash the oceans, and environment. Humans get what we deserve and haven't seen anything yet. See... Ice Queen. The planet need to fucking wake up.

And if we all did the small things as a group collective, we would see change happening. It's almost a shame the pandemic is coming to an end. The results were shocking for a such a short period ....and now it's getting sad again. And it annoys me to no end the plastic bags supermarkets use. They hardly fit anything in them anyway. They just annoy the fucking shit out of me, and rip anyhow. Once, someone brought me something in one to my house, and I wanted to go all Beverly Sutfin on there ass and strangle them with. Like.... just tie it around their neck.

Ahhh that's better...there now... what was a saying?

    That clip was brilliant.

I'm with you all the way. I think humans are destructive and annoying. And you are right: during the pandemic it was shown how much damage we can do to the environment. And still, some people refuse to see it.
Hahaha love it when you let them HAVE IT!

  10. I'm an optimist like you - one person doing one little thing is better than not doing anything at all. Picking up and recycling one piece of plastic might mean that a seal or dolphin doesn't choke on it when it would otherwise inevitably makes its way into the sea.
A fascinating but rather harrowing film.

I just cannot sit twirling my thumbs. If every one of us does one thing, can you imagine what can be done? Whenever I dispose of plastic, I make sure I literally tear it apart so no little animals get hurt.
