Yes, having a 200-year-old house in Connecticut is not something that we all can talk about. They bought it when it was a foreclosure and they lovingly restored it, though. So maybe that's what made it accessible. As I've said before: wanna try your relationship? Remodel a house. Actually, that should be part of the pre-marital courses they offer. You finish remodeling a house without wanting to kill your soon-to-be-spouse? Go ahead and get married. You're good to go.

Please note that one of them is a ceramicist and the other is a woodworker. For them restoring a 200-year-old house comes more naturally than for someone like, let's say, me. I rarely take to a hammer and all my tools come from IKEA. My manfriend calls them Mickey Mouse tools. So there's that. These men were able to see beyond the fact that it could be seen as a dinky foreclosure and that it had squeaky floors. For them, it was a diamond in the raw.

I really like the idea of mixing high/low elements and the fantastic conversation pieces they have throughout the house. The 'formal' dining room, though. With those 1948 frescoes? The emu? Yes. In the kitchen, I had never seen two islands. That was something quite awesome and I'm sure people who like to entertain love it. And the couch in the kitchen? Sold.

The bedroom? Yes. I love the space and the absolutely sui generis decor and artwork that does not feel stuffy or out of place. And that guest room? I think the wallpaper makes it. And I'm not a friend of busy wallpaper. For real. Also, I want a husband that builds our chickens a chicken coop like that. Yes, I do.

XOXO

  1. Two of my really good friends restore/remodel homes they buy. At first we thought, this will break them. But really it made them.

    1. That's awesome!
I think working as a team is a true test to any relationship. Someone once tried to teach me how to drive and we almost broke up! LOL

  2. Of everything I've seen, I wonder if there's anything I don't like. Answer: NO. And fresh eggs must be delicious.

    1. Yes. It's very pretty.
And having fresh eggs every morning? Yes, please.

  3. Such a beautiful home. And it’s not perfect, see the sloping floor in the master bedroom. I think you should get that monkey lamp. Put it by your bedside. It’ll freak you out when you wake up. 🤣

    1. Hahaha no.
The lamp is a little too whimsical for me. And the imperfections make the house.

  4. Very nice, good color schemes, but that granite countertop cost at least $45,000 so they must have really, really good primary jobs.

    1. I was thinking that I really liked that green.
Also, who knew radically changing colors around the house would look so good?
And I can't believe that countertop is so expensive! But again, I know nothing about construction.

  5. Oh, yeah. They have money. Lots and lots of money. New England Saltbox architecture...plain on the outside and all the hint of fancy on the inside with some woodwork, but not too much. They've done a fantastic job with restoration. Though, the busy, busy, busy of the wallpaper and fabric on those chairs? No. That chandelier in the dining room? Yes, please. You can ship that right over! XOXO

    1. I thought the 'woodworker' thing may be his hobby, rather than his profession. That area is not cheap. I kind of like that kind of house. It seems less oppressive than other earlier-American styles.
I think the house looks amazing and they kept the original charm.
Hahaha the wallpaper and the chairs somehow work for me? And I don't really like wallpaper.
The dining room is super cool.

  6. I'll bet their next door neighbors are named 'Biff and Mary Ann'.

The house was too staged for my taste. But those rugs!....I'm a whore for a good antique carpet.

    1. Hahaha
      Bet they are!
And you know what? I did not get the stage-y vibe. I loved their bedroom.
And yes, carpets, carpets, carpets!! Especially antique.

  7. I restored seven homes with the someday-soon-to-be-ex. After a point? I did my thing (cleaning, painting, landscaping) and he did his thing (tinkering, dealing with contractors, fixing stuff). It was hard work. Long hours. Lots of hours. I enjoyed it. I like the feeling of independence. And having an empty house at your disposal? Well, it had its possibilities! So you are right... that is one of the things all couples should have to undertake in order to prove they belong together. The other? Moving furniture into and out of a house or apartment and there's another... for some reason I can't think of it... I just did it with the boyfriend and we passed the test. Anyhoo... this was fun. Cute place. And, yes, it helps to have skills. I don't have any, but I brought to the table what I could. Kizzes.

    1. OMG Upton. Seven???
But using our strengths is what makes team work, well, work. And I cannot imagine all the work that goes into restoring.
I have moved with people and it's also a chore!
Hahaha I could think about 'the other' thing they can undertake to prove they can live together, though...

  8. Great video! I love the wood storage under the bookcases, the Bank Robber portrait and the Tragic Stuffed Emu. That wallpaper gives me hives though. The chicken coops are amazingly beautiful but you know what? I bet they still smell like chicken coops, so no. And I don't think it bodes well for those chickens to be named after the wives of Henry VIII, several of whom were beheaded.

    1. Ohhh yes!
I imagine their fireplaces work. The bank robber story was priceless, and so was the emu's drama. And I'm like you, wallpaper sometimes gets to me. Especially that tiny print, but it somehow works here?
LOL but the chicken coops look pretty!
And the chicken's names? I thought the same!

  9. I love the house except ... the low ceilings of an older, especially saltbox home, make me, who stands over six feet tall, a little claustrophobic. But I love their style, and the whimsy and the chickens, and, best of all the chicken's names!

You see, being of average height, I never think about those things. But yeah, old houses could have door frames that are dangerous to tall people.
I love their style, too. It's very eclectic but not hectic.
If I ever have chickens I'll also name them. That's adorable.

  10. I loved it, and can appreciate it! A little too much stuff about for me. But Im a sucker for wallpaper! I prefer it more on a focal wall myself though. I always tell people when giving advice about decorating to mix style, times, old and new and high and low. It makes for a much more intresting home and often brings out the personality of the resident. This place reminds me of my friends, the Capital Street Duos. And the Lad's uncle live in New Haven Ct...and has a cool house...but he remolded much more modern with old architectural elements mixed in. I could live here.

And is it wrong I want to see Justin naked and in bed?

    1. Loved it too.
And I think they managed to distribute the stuff well. I think it's the use of little pockets of furniture or accessories. I don't know.
And I think that high/low is what makes the bedroom and that kitchen corner so fantastic. They have taste.
And I feel you with Justin..... LOL

      XOXO
