I Can't Get No...

I don't know if I've told you, but I own nineteen Rolling Stones records. LPs, not CDs. That's how I like to listen to them. I discovered that doing one of the quizzes Upton puts up. I really like the Stones. Their sound makes me happy and giddy and slightly randy. Their music is raw and rhythmic and fun. I went to their 'Unzipped' here in Chi and it was fantastic. Their concert in Brazil was shown at the end of the labyrinthic trip and it was worth every penny. It's the closest I'll ever be to a Rolling Stones concert, too. I've never seen them live. They were here for a concert right before the pandemic but the tix were gone in sixty seconds.

Funny, how all my friends seem to swear by the Beatles, but I prefer the Stones. The Beatles always sound tame by comparison. The Stones are ... dirtier? Their interpretation of the Blues and of Rock & Roll is cool and it makes them certainly one of my favorite bands. And they've been around for fifty fucking nine years. Fifty nine. Basically, three generations could have been listening to the Stones right now. Easily. If that's not staying power...

And I really cannot explain why is it that I like them. I don't have real musical knowledge. I only know what I like when I hear it. I find there's this raunchy undercurrent in their music that speaks to me. You know I like it hot and heavy, right? Well, that's the way I feel their music. I know their lyrics are quintessentially straight male, but if I change 'girl' for 'boy' here and there, things get pretty hot. They're really one of my favorite bands. I can listen to the stones at any hour of the day and they're gonna match my mood.

Yesterday, Charlie Watts, the longtime Rolling Stones' drummer passed away at eighty. And I think that's kind of cataclysmic. The Stones have a very specific sound because they are.. the Rolling Stones. It's the combination of their talents what makes the band. Especially that four by four of the drums. It always makes me wanna move my hips, to be honest.

So goodbye, Charlie. He was the 'quiet' Stone, right? Keith and Mick seemed to make all the noise. But Charlie kept the rhythm. He will be missed.

XOXO

  1. I have a couple albums - vinyl, not CD - and never saw them in concert. But, we had been contemplating going this time --- but Pandemic, right? It'll be a pass. I have two Beatles - one CD (#1 collection), one vinyl (The White Album, of course, inherited). We were not allowed to have Beatles albums, we were not allowed to have Elvis albums.
So many bands of that time.... The Moody Blues were my fav out of the 60s. The Eagles in the 70s. Charlie's passing is a sad reminder of how fleeting it all is. XOXO

    1. Vinyl is the ish! LOL
And I did want to go see them but the scalpers were out in force and I said no. I bet it would have been awesome. And I also have the White Album and Rubber Soul.
Oh The Eagles is iconic. I read they are big sellers, even now.
I always expected it was going to be Keith who could go first. Fleeting is the right word.

  2. I have never really been a fan and i think the reason the Beatles stayed so popular is that they ended, and you always miss something when you can't have any more.
I'm not saying the Stones should go away, just ...who am I kidding, I'm not a fan so I guess I wouldn't care is they'd gone away.

    Still RIP Charlie

    1. You know what?
You may be right. The Beatles breaking up made them unattainable and therefore desirable. People are incredibly weird. LOL
When the Stones go (and they are all in their late seventies, I think) it'll be cataclysmic all over again. They are living leyends.

  3. Sorry to hear of Charlie's passing. I own 4 LPs of the Stones, But the Beatles did it for me.
I had almost every Beatles album and still do. When finally the Beatles CDs were released
I was happy to pick up a number of them for the car. (Remember trying to get a decent
cassette tape from the LPs? Yes, sad) I still love the music and it gets played regularly on
my PC and in the car when I'm alone. The husband not so fond of them as me!
Thanks for the look back; now where is my Let It Be album? I wanna hear it. mwg

    1. I was surprised!
I didn't even know he had some health issues. And the Beatles are iconic. My manfriend has almost every Beatles album. Even rarities. And between you and I, I prefer LPs. Oh, the stories of people trying to get those vinyl albums on cassette! LOL
And there's always a good reason to listen to music!!

  4. To me, The Beatles were a prototype "boy band". The Stones, not. The so called Fab Four was always boring and I preferred hearing their songs sung by anyone else. The Stones had a lot more gritty charisma, but I only listen to a handful of their songs. The passing of Don Everly hit me a bit harder. I must admit that I enjoyed watching Charlie more than the rest of the band. He always seemed to be thinking of something else, wearing that enigmatic smile.

    1. That is so true!
I think the Stones were more of a rock and roll band. I do like the Beatles' sound, but I prefer the Stones. OMG Don Everly died? I didn't even know. And Charlie always seemed to be in on a joke that the other boys did not get. I loved his attitude.

  5. I own a bunch of Stones, too. Growing up, you fell into one of two camps... Beatles or the Stones. I was Stones all the way. I loved their glam period. I loved their late 70's disco phase. I even got into their eighties stuff. It made me feel like I knew how to rock... and that was important, because I also loved Barry Manilow, but that felt girlish to me. The Stones made me know I was a boy... it kept me in touch with that part of me. And it also eventually taught me to appreciate my cock! As in, dancing! I love them. And now, another piece of that history is gone. RIP Charlie Watts. Thanks for this, dear.

    1. It surprised me so much when I realized I had all those Stones albums when I did your quiz. I had never counted them!
I think I have one of their albums in almost every decade! LOL
Funny how the Stones make us connect with something inside ourselves. Music. Always a catalyst.

  6. My best friend called me crying over this. It took me a minute to figure out who he was.

And what about Onlyfans backing down. Power of the people (and $).

    1. Ohhh your friend was probably a big fan.
It's a loss for music. Charlie did side projects without the Stones that were appreciated, too.
And Only Fans wants to keep making the millions it made during the pandemic, that's all. They saw the exodus of sex workers from their platform would finish them.

  7. RIP Charlie. I saw the Rolling Stones in concert in Pittsburgh in the late 80s. It was magnificent. I was on my feet almost the entire time.

So awesome! Bet you were. So lucky!
I only saw them in that 'Rolling Stone Experience' event in a giant screen and it was electrifying.

    1. Wait, but I thought you liked Rock and Roll?
And time does not stop. All the members of classic bands are in their late seventies now. The clock keeps ticking.
