Water

Dreams, in Freud's view, are formed as the result of two mental processes. The first process involves unconscious forces that construct a wish that is expressed by the dream, and the second is the process of censorship that forcibly distorts the expression of the wish. In Freud's view, all dreams are forms of "wish fulfillment" (later in Beyond the Pleasure Principle, Freud would discuss dreams which do not appear to be wish-fulfillment). Freud states: "My presumption that dreams can be interpreted at once puts me in opposition to the ruling theory of dreams and in fact to every theory of dreams..

I can very seldom remember my dreams. Apparently, there's many things that can affect our remembering our dreams, but I'm not sure what it is that makes me forget mine so quickly or to not remember them at all the next day. When I was in therapy (I went to couples therapy with a man I once lived with, and after we broke up, I kept going because I needed the help) my counselor told me I should keep a dream diary in order to remember them better. So for the longest time I kept a dream diary, writing down upon waking up what I remembered of the dream I've had.

I usually have three kinds of dreams: I'm mostly driving a car (yes, I know); I'm carrying some kind of grass baby (yes, a baby made of green grass) through some kind of ever changing dwelling or I'm doing something with water, as in the whole dream has to do with water. These dreams have repeated over and over, not with the same developments but many times with the same theme. Lately, I have not dreamed of grass babies or out of control cars. All my dreams have been about water.

Even though my latest dreams have been about water, I'm always reacting differently to the water in the dream: sometimes the water is cloudy, but it's mostly clear. Sometimes I'm in the water, sometimes I'm going to fall in the water and sometimes I am looking at the water and I know there's something lurking in the water. Water seems to be the common denominator but these dreams are all very different.

I sometimes dream of being on top of a very high place, and I'm on the verge of falling into what seems to be deep water. The feeling in my stomach is that I'm going to fall: a slight vertigo. But there's no fear associated with the fall. And sometimes I walk on that water. Yeah, very messianic. I have no idea what THAT means. Sometimes I dream a wall of water is going to fall over me, like a tsunami. I can see the blue wall of water getting closer and all I can think about is what I've learned about how long humans can hold their breath. The water never really gets to me but I'm always ready to hold my breath if it's necessary.

The third kid of dream with water is the one where I just know that there's something in the water I'm looking at. Sometimes the water is dark and mysterious, sometimes it's clear and transparent, but I always just KNOW there's something in the water. I'm not afraid, mind you, even though I get glimpses of fantastic animals and things that live in that water and some of them are really impressive. But again, I stay close to the water. I'm not afraid. It really does not make sense. And all these dreams are in vivid color.

It really does not surprise me that I dream of water. I've always been attracted to water. Ever since I was little and would go visit my aunt by the seashore. I used to play for hours and hours with my toy soldiers and water. I learned how to swim very young and even though I'm not the greatest swimmer, I'm proficient. I'm not a friend of diving, though. I wade. And I love the beach.

But it's funny how many water dreams I've had in the past months. I have no idea what they mean. Maybe some of you amateur Sigmunds could tell me what's going on in my life? Also, do you remember your dreams? Do you dream of electric sheep?

XOXO

  1. I know I dream, and sometimes when I have to get up in the middle of the night, you know, cause I’m old, I will have a memory of the dream. However, after going back to bed and then getting up for the day, there’s hardly any recollection of the dream, no matter how vivid it was in the middle of the night.

I wonder if your proliferation of water dreams has anything to do with your life over the last year and a half, being cooped up and all. I don’t know if it signals a desire for lost freedom or impending doom. Hopefully the former, though with the spike in infections it could be the latter.

    1. Oh, same!
I usually remember my dream very well if I wake up very early in the morning, or if I wake up in the middle of the night. And I used to write them down right after I woke up, because otherwise they're gone.
And I think it may have to do with the pandemic, because it has changed. I know that most everybody has mild PTSD after four years of Cheeto and almost two years of pandemic.

  2. The water represents your unknown future. Events out of your control. Or your falling into something as a natural course of things. You obviously have a healthy degree of confidence. Which you generated, being on your own as young as you were... bravo.

My dreams tend to be quite vivid and rather detailed. They exhaust me, as I am always working - usually in theatre, a film, or concert stage. Concerts, I am never the performer, but the gofer offstage, a support person, a personal assistant. The stars I support are very real. Bette Midler is a terror. Theatre, I am always the scrub, coming in to replace someone. I fail to read the script but am certain I can fake my way through the show...?? And film? I am an actor and the stories are quite riveting, as is the cast. My favorite is a film I did with Madonna, Courtney Love, and Holly Hunter. Rupert Everett was to play my role, but he backed out, so my win. Madonna was surprisingly good in it, Courtney was capricious and Holly Smart as a whip. Lauren Bacall is the only one who came out of it smelling like roses, though.

    Dreams are fun. Kizzes.

    1. Ohhh that kind of makes sense. And I don't know about confidence, but falling into something as a natural course of things, I can see that.
And some of my dreams are like yours, almost Baroque in the details. And Madonna, Courtney Love and Holly Hunter in a movie? That's a handful!

      And yes, dreams are fun!

  3. I usually remember my dreams for a while after I wake up, some stick with me forever. I usually dream in color. They all involve people, some who I know, some who I don't, and there is a lot of talking. And mostly I'm watching things play out, even when I'm one of those talking, almost like an existential observer of my life. Very interesting,.

    1. I never thought about the dreaming in color until I was asked directly if I did. And I do. And my dreams involve sometimes people I know, but mostly have a very sparse population.
I usually take active part on my dreams, though. I even run in them, but they do have that quality of being super slow sometimes.

  4. I'm sure dreaming of water has as many meanings as there are languages. I often dream, very rarely have any nightmares. I feel like a lot of my dreams have to do with travel, or some locale. Some with people I "know" but haven't met in person. My mind creates how they must look in my mind. The only ones I seem to remember are the sexual ones. But after being up an hour, I can't remember any of it. Some of my dreams get so bizarre, like they that couldn't happen. I do believe some days my mind must be like being in a fun house. I have also had dreams continue from a night before a couple of times....now that is odd.

    1. That's what I thought, too. After all, it's an interpretation, right?
And I don't have nightmares, really, but I do have sexual dreams and they're fun! LOL
My dreams can get really bizarre, too. So bizarre that I wonder to myself 'is this a dream?' while dreaming. Can you imagine?
And I've never had a dream continue the next night! That's so cool!

  5. I dream all the time, always in color, and remember most, if not all, of them when I wake. I kinda think of it as storytelling for me while I sleep. Some are odd ... I dreamed once of sharing a storage space with Kim Kardastrophe ... or sexual ... years before he murdered his wife I had a hot sex dream with OJ ... and some are a bit terrifying ...stuck somewhere I can't get out.
But I love a dream, good, bad, odd or scary.

    1. I like that idea! Dreams as storytelling.
I'd love to remember mine better, though. And a storage space with one of the Kartrashians, huh? Fascinating. And well, OJ was a handsome man, Bob. Totally understandable.

  6. I can't even hazard a guess about your water dreams.
I dream all the time. Sometimes I remember them for days, sometimes they are gone within minutes. Lately, all my dreams have been ones where I am lost. At a mall and can't find my way out of the building. At a grocery store and can't find my car in the parking lot. Out hiking and then can't find my way back out of the woods. Very weird and, of course, I wonder wtf is going on in my life that makes me feel lost. Too much time cooped up, hiding from the covid?? If you can figure it out - let me know. XOXO

    1. Ohhh really?
Being lost can be kind of scary, no? Who knows? And I think of course, dreams are not strictly literal. Otherwise, how'd you explain me walking on water? LOL
But seriously, all this time not going out as we used to be has messed up our minds.
And I'll let you know if I find something out about it!

  7. I'm like you -- I rarely remember my dreams or remember them briefly upon waking and then *poof* they're gone. I'm not an expert on dream interpretation but I do know that in many symbol systems, water represents sex and sexuality. Does that resonate with you, LOL?

    1. It's so frustrating!
Sometimes my dreams are really cool and I'd like to remember more of them. The writing in the dream diary was a good exercise. I wish I'd remember to do it more often.
And sex, huh? Probably accurate. I think about sex a lot. LMAOOO

  8. I couldn't even imagine what your dreams mean, Sixpence, because I am an idiot. Hopefully, you got some good feedback in the comments. I don't really remember my dreams but I think wearing a super cool CPAP machine is probably why. Take care and have a good rest of your week.

    1. Ohhh I think you mentioned the CPAP machine in one of your posts.
Wearing one of those could certainly affect the way your REM sleep, no?
And thanks, Mr. Shife! You too!
