Oh, Ethan

I'm posting this house because I think the owner is hot. Yes, I'm that superficial. And because I'd climb him like a tree in that pool in the backyard and would have to consult with Big on how to keep curious neighbors in the dark about my proclivities. There's something about him that makes me want to believe that he has a male partner. Why? Because. Call it gaydar. Or wishful thinking.

Now, the house is fantastic, don't get me wrong. The man is just the icing on the house cake. I love everything about it and I would love to live in a place like that. From the great sitting room to the bedrooms to the backyard and the way the used concrete and wood to create a modern but inviting environment. Did you see those little nooks to just hide and chill? I also I like brutalist architecture so this house is right up my alley. I think I'd love to live in a house with tons of concrete. It is a material that is usually not thought about when thinking about living quarters but I think it's super cool. Alo, wood houses make me nervous, I prefer stone, concrete or brick. I guess it has to do with the house I grew up in, which was brick. It makes me feel safe, I guess.

I love the fireplace in the living room. I think it is gorge and would make me a friend of fireplaces again. I also love that the walls are concrete and that the artwork just stands out in sharp contrast with them. Really beautiful. And you would not have to worry about paint. The kitchen is dreamy. And I don't even cook. I'd go the way of Hello Fresh with Ethan, though. For sure.

The master bedroom is great. Love that little chair. I think I have a black one that would look cool next to the bed. Ideas everywhere, no? When I watch these videos I always see something I like. Another idea for those cold winter nights, right? Also, the courtyard is super cool and it's very pretty. I think it's perfect and not fussy, which makes for a great combo for someone who likes no-fuss gardening. And they have a pool (two, really). Not like a pool would be useful here (Chicago basically has three months of 'pool time' and then it's a popsicle) but there? Definitely. Also, there's skylight and an office underneath the pool. Also a gym. Definitely gay. Yeah, daddy is fit.

This is money, too. They made furniture especially for the house. And I can't believe how many people collaborated to make this beautiful space. It should be nice. Now I want a house in Sydney. With Ethan, preferably.

XOXO

  1. I agree, this is a beautiful home, even if it is made of concrete. They have done a wonderful job of warming up the place. The living room is inviting and the fireplace is cute. And I couldn’t believe all of the different levels. The pool with the skylight in it is ingenious, though I’d constantly be worrying about a leak. And the climate is temperate enough you don’t have to drain the pool.

    1. I'd have that same concern about that skylight. I hope they've embedded the edges of the (extremely thick) glass well into the concrete with plenty of waterproof calking.

    2. I think it is pretty. And it is hard to make concrete look 'homey' but they did it, I think.
I don't know if I'd like a pool, even living in a warm climate.
I agree with Big, too. I'm sure they thought the whole pool-as-skylight thing well. Those architects didn't come cheap!

  2. Very cool. Concrete makes for great building material. Coupled with the wood accents, it becomes stunning and what seems cold and sterile picks up warmth. Lots and lots of money to build this place. Not to mention the interior design elements. I could live there. Yep. In a NY minute. XOXO

    1. Oh, how would we keep curious neighbors in the dark about proclivities? Oh, Six...why we just invite them over! XOXO

    2. I like it!
I like the mixture of concrete/wood . I understand people think the Brutalist style is cold and sterile but I kind of like what they did here. And yes, lots of money. They custom made a ton of stuff.

LOL I have some neighbors I'd never invite over. Ever.

  3. I'm not saying he's gay or straight, but that clearly is a child's room in the house, too, so, you might become Mommy Six if you get your wish!

That said, the designer Matthew is adorable, and the house, and yes the pool, are fabulous!

I noticed the bunk beds and the playtime nooks. Probably him and his husband do have kids (or nieces).
      Oh, Matthew. Yes.
That pool looks pretty inviting, I have to admit.

  4. Give me a house with old bones, no concrete for me, please.

    1. Oh, yes.
Houses with old bones have character. But keeping up with the slate roofs, the copper gutters, the electrical that was installed in 1927 and the basement issues was why the house I lived in in Ohio was sold. It was a beautiful money pit.

  5. I LOVED this! Very Frank Lloyd Wright with the built in seating. And the textures added just set this off. Then, the pool and sky light! WoW!!!!!!!

    1. I saw that too!
I liked the mid-century inspo and the use of wood. It's also full of light, to be mostly concrete. The skylight is indeed wow.

  8. It is good to have priorities and Australia doesn't as bat shit crazy as the US. Or is it? I always heard the Australians were a lot like the southern states but I have never confirmed that one. I hope not. Most of the stuff that I have seen out of there seems good. Hope the week is going well, Sixpence. Take care.

    1. Australia does not have the wingnuts but it does have a long story or racism against Aboriginal people. They're cool, though. There's no perfect country.
And the week is going well, Mr. Shife! I see you changed your avatar. Hope to hear the tory behind this one!

  9. It's very rare for me....but this one does nothing for me. Too cold and rigid. Even though the interior has color....for me personally I wouldn't be happy there. Im getting to much Scandinavian furniture showroom feel. I guess Ill just lie naked by the pool then leave.

    1. It would be better if you laid naked inside the pool and we could look up through the skylight. 😎

    2. I think it's rigid, but I like the touches of light and the courtyard.
I also like all the wood and the quirky details. I am more of a Wabi-Sabi guy but this spoke to me. Also, Daddy.
And you know Huntley would be looking up that skylight if you were naked in the pool.

  10. House porn. Nice. I think this is an economical home with all the warmth of an airport lounge. I can't imagine living here... and there it is... that's my criteria of whether I like a place or not. This house porn stuff? Not my cup of tea. I do like those dudes who personalize their impersonal cramped apartments. This? This is privilege on parade. Blech. Too much of that stuff in the world... it creates unrealistic want. I can't support that. But you do you, hon. I think you have incredible taste. Kizzes.

I can totally imagine myself living there. I'd double the number of plants and would not have bunker beds, but hey. And it IS privilege. Having an architectural firm do your house and have an interior designer mean money.
Aww thnx Upton. I could say you have good taste, too!

      XOXO
