The Edit

Just a few days back Maddie was writing about one of the most famous Drag artists currently gracing our.. everywhere? RuPaul. I've known about RuPaul since what seems like forever. I remember the first time I saw her on MTV singing Supermodel. It was some Spring Break bullshit program, those that MTV used to churn out every year, but she made it worth it. I clocked her but the straight men that were with me were baffled: who was that Barbie doll with the deep voice and legs for days? I knew who she was: it was RuPaul, Supermodel of the World.

It's been many moons now since I saw Ru on MTV and her star waxed and waned until around ten years ago. Then I saw her again on Logo. Do you remember Logo? The little gay channel that could? I do. I had been wanting an all-gay all-day channel since forever. And now we had it, with Drag added for comfort. It was fucking groundbreaking. And there she was: RuPaul was both Tim Gunn and Tyra Banks with a touch of Paul Lynde and a smidge of your sassy aunt all rolled in one stunning Glamazon package. Her charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent were all there. And boy, did she milk it.

She's milked it so well that now we have RuPaul's Drag Race in the United States, Canada, Down Under, the UK, Spain and Thailand. And probably one or two on the way. RuPaul has always been a hustler. From her beginnings as Starbooty stapling photocopies of 'RuPaul is Everything' to light poles to her many Emmy awards as a host, RuPaul has been working non-stop. And I admire that. RuPaul single handedly took Drag out of its slow exile on Wednesday night at midnight in tiny bars in big and small cities and planted squarely on the living rooms of millions and millions of homes. Yes, she did that.

Now there are hundreds of Drag artists out there who are 'Ru Girls': artists that have gotten the chance of their lifetimes and now are running away with it. Some have movies, many have records out, make up lines, YouTube channels, whole careers built on the image that they cultivated and polished during their time in the competition. From the ones that have left during the first episode (Hey, Porkchop!, Miss Vanjie) to the ones that are now mainstream names (Jinxx, Trixie, Bianca, Sasha, etc).

Oh, but it's not all accolades. She's been criticised for many things: for not including Trans women in the competition (she has now), for not including women in the the competition (she has now), for fracking (I don't think she goes to that ranch much), for the 'challenges' in the competition (Ru did most of them during her life and they literally have trained those Drag Queens to become superstars) for not doing her make-up and hair (she doesn't have to?), for being too old (!!) and for I don't know how many other things.

But the one that she is more criticised for is The Edit: some Drag Queens have come for the competition and alleged that it was 'The Edit' what made them look 'bad'. And this is when this song comes handy: Ru has suddenly decided that she's had it with the ungrateful little shits and has read them for filth. No, honey, it was not The Edit, it was YOU. You were petty, and immature and a pain and that came across on TV for the world to see. Do they edit the program to have a 'narrative'? Duh. It's a reality series. Of course they create arcs because it needs to be entertaining. But it's not a documentary of Drag, the same way that Project Runway is not a documentary on fashion or America's Top Model a documentary on modeling. Ru Pau'ls Drag race is entertainment and in that sense, it delivers.

I still remember when Pearl (remember Pearl? No? Good.) said that Ru was 'cold' and told her something along the lines of "if the camera is not rolling, it's not worth saying' or something like that. And it's fucking true! RuPaul has an act, the same way that all the Drag artists that have gone through the competition have an act: it's a Persona, an alter ego that needs the public to become alive. When Pearl went on some YouTube channels and complained about Ru telling her that what she said was worthless unless it was in front of a camera she was confirming that what Ru told her was true. You probably have not heard much about Pearl because she, even though her makeup was great and did well in her season, refused to follow the advice that was given to her: push yourself out there and show what you're made of. She did some makeup tutorials, and Instagram account that was 'hacked' and some attempts to create a YouTube channel and then... what? I have not seen anything from her in years. Guess you cannot make something from anything... And don't get me started with Tyra Sanchez!

Can the fandom be terrible to the contestants? Yes, that's true, but that's not Ru's fault. When the fandom is composed of Drag Queens, gay men, straight women and tweens and teens, it's gonna get petty. Can some girls appear a 'villains' in the competition? Yes, they can. I remember PhiPhi telling Sharon Needles to go back to Party City and I thought that was iconic. But PhiPhi, a talented artist, was pummeled by the fandom. Same as other Drag artists who have been in the competition (Willam, The Vixen, Widow von Du come to mind) and that have suffered some backlash and they blame it on The Edit. But I don't think there is such thing as an edit to blame for all the fuckery: the producers need the soundbites and the actions. Can they place them in the 'right' moment to reinforce a narrative? Yes, the same way that a take can be chosen in a movie to deliver the director's vision. But the actors need to create the take. The director and the cinematographer cannot create a movie without the actors. Same with Drag Race: we don't watch Drag Race to see RuPaul judge, we watch the contestants and lap it up when they show their charisma, uniqueness, nerve and talent. That's why we watch Drag Race: we watch these Queens do incredible artistry and we fall for them.

The Edit, at the end, has nothing to do with RuPaul and everything to do with who the Queens are. And sometimes, not even the best producer can make some of these girls look great. And that's part of the game. These performers sign up for the opportunity of their lives and most of them make the best out of it. But some others will not and then they will blame The Edit for it. And I'm not here for it. And neither is Ru.

XOXO

  1. Everyone on every reality show who ends up looking bad blames it on The Edit. It's become so overused, that I'm thinking of employing it the next time I get called out for something.
Late to work? It's The Edit.
Didn't get my project done on time? The Edit?
Fight with Carlos? That Damned Edit!!!

    1. There’s a new show on Fox (not the shady “news” channel, but the entertainment division) called The Big Leap. It’s about the production of a reality dance show in Detroit, I believe. It shows how the producers sometimes manufacture situations for the ratings. It’s a pretty good show, check it out if you can.

    3. Is THAT what that show is about? Well, I may have to give it a shot now. Thanks, Huntley!!! xoxo

    4. Hahaha
I know right? EVERYTHING is the edit. But the girls DID say what they say and did what they did on camera (remember when The Vixen up and left while Ru was mid-sentence? Good TV but snotty behavior). It's a Reality TV program, which maximizes drama for ratings. You have volatile, creative personalities, add one hundred thousand dollars and high-pressure situations and you have the perfect storm. You then just have to put it all together. No deep fakes here.

  3. You may find this surprising, but I never watch reality TV... every, no matter what the show. My life is real enough already.

  4. LOL. You tell it!! Those folks know what they're signing on to. One trusts they've seen an episode or 100. If they don't know how "reality" shows are created, then they need to crawl back under their rock. Girls can edit my ass.... XOXO

    1. Of course they do!
They have to pass background checks and psych evals and the works! The program has been around for more than ten years and more than ten seasons and the contests from which Drag Race draws have been around for years.
      No excuses.

  5. Good stuff, Sixpence. Appreciate the additional details about Ru. I just started watching season 2 of We're Here on HBO Max. If it wasn't for RuPaul, then I would not have been entertained by Bob the Drag Queen, Eureka O’Hara and Shangela Laquifa Wadley.

    1. Glad to contribute to your online education, Mr. Shife!
And We're Here is fantastic. It's made me cry once or four times. Those girls are indeed super talented and they all went through Drag Race boot training. It's a good education if the student knows what to take from it.

  6. I think most of these girls that go on the show better be tough as nails and not sensitive. You' can't control the fans and you have no control over how you will be shown and edited....so make sure your T's are crossed and I's dotted and no worries. It does pain me to hear of even more girls talking shit about Ru... but for many other reason, not the edits. I think Willam at this point is Ru's biggest pain in the backside. Much like many other artist who become famous, I do lose my luster for them. He and Madonna I still enjoy...but am I still a hardcore fan like I was? Probably not. But Ru will forever be right up there with the likes of Charles Pierce, Danny La Rue, Divine and Lily Savage. I think as many get more famous they do end up different people. Maybe lose sight. Except that damn Lady Bunny. that bitch will always be a fucking fruitcake and fill the nyc streets with her antics and hilarity.

    1. They ARE Drag artists. They cannot have thin skin or would leave crying at the first drunk throwing a drink at the stage or at the first inconvenience. I've alway thought Drag artists are unflappable.
Some of these Queens have taken advantage of 'the edit', of course and have showcased their talents to THEIR advantage: they have used the program to promote... themselves. Which make THEM smart.
Willam fucked a member of the production team and that was unprofessional. They gave her the chance to save face but Willam is Willam and she's used that for her own profit. I don't know how much she'll be able to milk it (it's been awhile) but she IS careful about what she says. She can still be sued because I'm sure she signed a contract.
And you are right. Ru IS a trendsetter and deserves a place in the Drag Parthenon, Edits be damned.

      XOXO

I just listened to Bunny's Ebony and Irony podcast. Bitch is hilarious!

    2. The big stink with Willam and Ru now is the illness of mutual friend Matha Anderson, who Ru for some unknown reason after decades let go. Apparently Willam accuses Ru of not coming to see her time friend. Willam says they got into a huge shouting match resulting in herself calling Ru a fucking bitch, after Ru said something smart to her. Ru was apparently not happy many people witnessed the episode.

And I have always found Latrice to be intresting. In interviews she never once says he hated Ru or the show, but if you read between the lines....I see this from many queens. Tamisha is starting to get outspoken now. And Carmen doesn't have a good thing to say and she had a great run on her season. But no different that all the models backstabbing Tyra Banks on that model show years ago. There will always be a new queen to rise and take the throne. From what I gather, if your now all bubbly, happy and perform peak and kiss Ru's ass, many won't be asked to appear on All Stars or in the traveling touring show. Who knows?

    3. Ohhh I heard about that one.
But I also heard that Mathu had some mental health issues and that's why they called Raven (allegedly recommended by Mathy himself). And Willam IS a vindictive, aggressive, petty queen. I would not like to be on her bad side, either. Tamisha signed the NDA and she milked her passing by the show. She's a legend, but I don't think she knows how to use that.
Carmen also loves controversy (see Gia Gunn) and like you said, there's always gonna be ungrateful bitches who in their heads, feel they were wronged one way or another.

      XOXO

  7. I understand the importance of Ru. I was there, too, in the early days of LOGO and was gobsmacked and excited. That it went to crap... well. We had a gay house station her in Minneapolis for two years, too... yeah, bad management. It didn't last. Back to Ru. She's iconic. She's also a bit out of touch. That happens. She's surrounded and living in a make-believe, very carefully cultivated world. She has people... like, say... film editors, who protect the source of their paycheck. So let's not be so quick to canonize the dear groundbreaker. At this point, Ru is spread to thin. And, to have put together that little music video? I'm thinking her skin is a bit too thin, too. At this point? The lady can afford to be generous. That vid is like Madonna crushing a bouquet of Hydrangeas. Really beneath them... and really unnecessary. In Ru's case? The lady doth protest too much.

    1. I see what you mean.
But 'The Edit' excuse has been around for many years and this is the first time that Ru or anybody associated with the brand has even responded. It was overdue, IMHO. Biting the hand that feeds you is not polite. Is Ru totally in synch with the Drag community today? Maybe not. But that's not really the aim of the contest, I think. The aim of the contest is to showcase the new talent. And that it does. Not to mention the cachet associated with an Emmy-winner production. These girls go on to have great careers.
I would not be generous, either. Once a Drag Queen, always a Drag Queen and a good reading is always welcome.
