A High Note

I still remember the first 007 novel I read: it was From Russia, With Love. It had a slightly battered cover but I was intrigued by the woman that appeared in it. It had one of those almost-garish covers that old-timey softcover novels had and I thought it was slightly titillating. I love vintage book covers. I'm hooked on Upton's collection of vintage gay porn novel covers. I found the novel in my cousin's husband's bookcase one weekend I was house-sitting for them when I was around fourteen. I had never read Ian Fleming (I was fucking fourteen and those books were a no-no I guess, but by now you know me, so..) and that book opened my eyes to a genre I learned to love even more than westerns or any kind of pulp fiction (or bodice rippers, natch). I was hooked.

I've always found Fleming's books very male, very heterosexual and somehow stuck in a time and place, and yet the action was so awesome that I kept reading them. I read all eight James Bond books my cousin's husband had and went on to read the whole series by the time I was about nineteen. I loved the idea of a debonair spy who kicked ass and looked fantastic in a tuxedo. And machismo be damned, I wanted to be a Bond Boy. I just KNEW 007 was a fantastic lay.

As for the movies, I've seen them all but my favorite Bond has always been Sean Connery, closely followed by Daniel Craig. The others have been cool (especially Lazenby), but I have never wanted to jump their bones. With Connery and Craig, the reaction was pretty much immediate: I wanted them to fuck me between catching Dr. No and killing Spectre. Really. Hey, I do have a vivid imagination.

So when we sat down over the weekend to watch No Time To Die, I was slightly torn. I knew it was going to be one of those bookend movies, one that would tie all the Daniel Craig as Bond loose ends and I was not sure I was ready to say my good-byes. I mean, can you blame me?

But Dave had told us he liked the movie and I decided to give it a try (you know Dave and his gruffy uncle ways, so if he said it was good..) It was on Apple and we had surround system and popcorn, so why the hell not? And I was not disappointed. It had everything Bond movies usually have and a little bit more. This time James Bond was kicking ass and taking names and he was a little bit more... human? I did not really care for the villain too much this time (the manfriend was like, what's Freddy Mercury doing in a Bond movie? And that was it for me) but the rest of the cast is fantastic and I kind of want to see what they come up with for the next series of movies. This is a very high note in the series.

So thanks for the recommendation, Dave. The movie reminded me why I liked those books so much and it gave me a chance to watch Daniel Craig rock a tuxedo once more. What's not to like?

XOXO

P.S. one of my favorite parts of the movie: Ana de Armas in Cuba. Oh, I wanted so much more of that...
Two weeks' training my ass.

  1. I didn't quite get Rami Malek either, but then I was mostly Daniel Craig, hell, I was all Daniel.
    I'm gonna miss his Bond.

    1. I think he was ok in Mr. Robot but his Freddy Mercury did not impress me too much. Same here. And Daniel Craig all the way!
I'm gonna miss this Bond, too.

  2. I never read any of the books...and I seem to be only a Bond fan when if comes to Connery and Craig. I have seen all there Bond films. I just couldn't get into the other actors. And I sure am not ready for Craig to leave. He just brought some kind of swank gentlemanly yet daddy sexiness to the role . I have no problem tying him naked to a chair with the bottom out...spanking and lightly whipping his ass and me under it performing other delights......

    1. Some of the other actors (Roger Moore, for example) were serviceable. But Connery and Craig were canon. Craig, especially had that physicality that boxers and sportsmen have. A wiry disposition that makes you feel alert, I guess.
Oh, that scene in Casino Royale! Yes, please!

  3. You're right about Rami who was too soft-spoken to be a good villain. You're also right about Ana de Armas. She was freaking awesome.

    1. I know, right?
Being soft-spoken can be creepy as hell, but there was just something there (lack or range?) that didn't quite gel. And Ana de Armas was sexy and funny and natural and fantastic. Wasn't she in Knives Out?

  4. For me, Connery will always be Bond. I've enjoyed Craig in the role, he's done it justice. But when rumors began to surface that the next Bond would be played by a woman...I admit, I lost it. Thank goodness that BS was officially put to rest last month. XOXO

    1. Oh, I watch Sean Connery Bond movies yearly.
Craig is my second fav. I wanted the new Bond to be Idris Elba, to be honest. He's got the physicality to do the role justice.

  5. Farewell, Daniel Craig! I love the m/m fanfics that pair him with his younger quartermaster Ben Whishaw. The OTP name is, of course, "Double-Oh-Q" or "00Q!"

I've read some online and I totally approve! Hmmm... Just thinking of Daniel mahandling Ben gives me the tingle to mingle....

  6. I've always been more interested in the Bond Girls and the theme songs than the actual movies. I remember seeing The Spy Who Loved Me. I think that may be the only one I ever went to see on purpose. I only went because I was ga-ga for the theme song sung by Carly Simon. I thought it was a very vanilla movie, so I guess that is why I didn't bother watching more. I agree about Sean Connery, although, in real life, he's a bit of a prick head. And I get the appeal of Craig. He could slap me up any old time. Maybe it's the franchise thing. Or maybe I need to read one of the books. That you've read all of them... Bravo!

    1. Bond girls are iconic.
The names, the beauty, the fashion. And the theme songs are always fantastic, so distinctive. I think you should watch all the Craig movies. The arch is quite interesting and he grows as a character.
And Daniel Craig could do many things to me and I would not protest. The books are kind of totems of a bygone era. Fantastic nostalgia, if taken lightly.

  7. After Sean Connery I haven’t seen many of the Bond films, my favorite probably being Goldfinger. Roger Moore was ok and I don’t think I’ve seen any of Daniel Craig’s. I think I may have to catch up.

    1. Sean Connery is still the quintessential Bond, but Craig has done a great job with the role. Very physical and with rugged good looks. Yum. I think many of his Bond movies are on Hulu, get thee to it!
