The Sad State

@ALALIBRARY

You know what? JM was just talking at OpenAWindow about the #Don'tSayGay bullshit and I decided to jump right in and add my voice to the chorus of people wondering what the fuck happened with Freedom of Expression in the United States.

“The 729 challenges tracked by ALA represent the highest number of attempted book bans since we began compiling these lists 20 years ago,” said ALA President Patricia “Patty” Wong. “We support individual parents' choices concerning their child's reading and believe that parents should not have those choices dictated by others. Young people need to have access to a variety of books from which they can learn about different perspectives. So, despite this organized effort to ban books, libraries remain ready to do what we always have: make knowledge and ideas available so people are free to choose what to read.”

Seven hundred and twenty-nine. That's the number of complaints the association has received. And all because the conservative snowflakes just do not want their 'children' to read. Or be aware of sexual orientation. Or the history of racism in this country. Or about other religions. But mainly, about sexual orientation as in the case of #Don'tSayGay. The thing is that there are no discussions of sexual orientation in grades one through three, as this bill would have you believe, and it opens the door for teachers to be sued.

Beyond branding, a core argument over the bill centers around whether it would prohibit the “instruction” or “discussion” of sexual orientation.

The bill’s sponsors have emphatically stated that the bill would not prohibit students from talking about their LGBTQ families or bar classroom discussions about LGBTQ history, including events like the 2016 deadly attack on the Pulse nightclub, a gay club in Orlando. Instead, they argue that the bill would bar the “instruction” of sexual orientation or gender identity.

But the text says both.

@NBC

@AP

Also, it's not like a child can receive sexual education without their parents' consent in most of the United States:

Many states define parents’ rights concerning sexual education:

Twenty-five states and the District of Columbia require school districts to notify parents that sexual or HIV education will be provided.
Five states require parental consent before a child can receive instruction.
Thirty-six states and the District of Columbia allow parents to opt-out on behalf of their children.

@ALA.ORG

But you know that it's all about censorship. Just hone in the infographic above and it is absolutely clear all of this is just plain censorship. The bigots are trying to influence the law to silence the voices they don't like. There are SIXTEEN states pushing a version of the Don't Say Gay bullshit they passed in Flori-duh (as Bob calls it). Oh, don't believe me? I invite you to go to @THEADVOCATE and take a peep. And it's nothing new. The Religulous bigots of the Religious Wrong have been trying to push a version or another of this for YEARS:

Before there was “don’t say gay,” there was “no promo homo” — bills that proliferated in the 1980s and ’90s as conservative legislators responded to the AIDS crisis by seeking to ban what they considered “promotion of homosexuality” in schools, especially in sex education courses. These bills became law in states including Alabama, Arizona, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, and Utah. The laws have now been repealed or struck down in all but four states: Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and Texas, according to GLSEN.

So what can you do, says, you?
Well, you can start by uniting against book bans, which is directly connected to the Don't Say Gay bullshit. You can also start your one (Wo)man crusade at the local level, and do like me and join your local Public Library. Sometimes the simpler solutions are the best. And the most gratifying. I don't have the ear of my congresswoman -love you Tammy!-, but I went to my Public Library and got a weapon: a fucking library card. And I have been requesting EACH AND EVERY ONE OF THE BANNED BOOKS IN THE LIST so I can read them all. And if there's a cute gay romance novel in the mix while I look for the banned books? I'll bring it home too. Because why the fuck not?

I have seven of these books already in the works. My Public Library allows me to create reading lists that I then use to plan my reading. I just finished Jack of Hearts by L.C. Rosen and am currently reading We Are The Ants, by Shaun David Hutchinson, one of the 18 LGBTQ+ books banned in Texas, and I have Gender Queer, by Maia Kobabeone of the most vitriolically hated books by the Religulous Wrong in my list, too. You can see them in the photo above, along with Boyfriend Material (a fun romance novel) and ACE, a book about Asexuality. See, you can combine some scholarly work with mindless entertainment.

We don't need big gestures to combat the bigots, we can sign up to be elected fucking Dog Catcher if we want a start in politics, but we need to make a difference somehow. So what about you, Constant Reader? Do you own a Library Card? Do you KNOW where you local Public Library is located? My plead to you is to get a library card if you don't have one (if you do have one, *SMOOCHES!*) and take this list of books to your local Library and ASK YOUR LIBRARIAN FOR THEM. Yes, I'm using all caps, because of course I am.

Use your strength as a taxpayer to ask for these books in your local Library. If they don't have one of them or any of them, they'll do interlibrary loan and will get them for you. I know it's possible because I have two books (Lawn Boy and This Book is Gay) requested. And Lawn Boy has quite the crazy story. Click on the link. It's typical bigot hysteria.

So get your summer reading list ready. And also tell your cousins and nephews and nieces, if you don't have children. Or tell your grand-nephews and grand-nieces about these books, if you have them.  You don't need a big gesture, you don't have to go and bitch-slap Death Santis (oh the joy!). The idea is to bring these topics to the open, to make them 'normal'. The conservatives want to keep them in the dark. Do not let them.

Oh, and remember to VOTE! Vote all those motherfucking Repugs off government positions. Vote and get the Marjorie Three Names, the -real- pedophiles and the bimbos with husbands who show their dicks to schoolgirls off the American government. Today they are trying to ban a book about a teen falling in love with another teen. Tomorrow they are coming for your ass. Oh, you don't believe me? Remember Roe VS Wade?

XOXO

P.S. if you are one the 'petition' people, go ahead and sign this one.

      And so is Dave.
      It's the idea that if you are not white, Xtianist and straight you have no rights in America. The Repugs have allied themselves with the Religulous Wrong to attack any semblance of progress concerning 'others'. And use social issues to drive a wedge between them and 'others'.

  3. This is so fucking ridiculous. It’s all mind control. Let’s raise a generation of fucking idiots. And it’s really nothing new, just getting more brazen.

    A Chicago Sun-Times columnist has a blog that he posts to daily and he posted a column that he wrote in 2009 about a reversal of a banned book in the Chicago Public Schools in today’s post:

    1. Oh, absolutely.
      After The Orange Baboon was elected by a small margin, their taste of power and corruption got them frantic. And now they want blood. First, Roe VS Wade, now, LGBTQ+ rights. Next, anything else they can get banned, deleted or striked down.

      And they keep trying over and over. That's why we should always respond. Always. At least I will try.

  4. Oh, DON'T GET ****ME**** STARTED. You know my stance on this topic. The stoopid motherfuckers like Marjorie-three-names pulling this shit...well, it's dog whistles for their base. The thing is, Libraries won't be jumping on that bandwagon any time soon --- not unless the elected asshats take over 100%. Vote those commie-fascist dictator wannabes out. Get OUR base riled up is how that will happen. XOXO

    1. Oh, I WANT to get you started.
      I want to get everybody started because we cannot be complacent. We know what kind of dog whistles they work with and we need to fight them. Some libraries will fight back but some will comply (did you read about the guy who told his local libraries 'we are conservative here' and basically threatened them?).
      If they can put stupid assholes in power, we need to vote for smart people as an antidote.
      And trust me, I will always try to get people riled up. It's my hobby.

    2. Well, okay, then.... 😎 The ultra-tightass places - like the rural areas in my state - may be hopeless. But the urban areas are where we outnumber the assholes is where it counts. It really is time for our majority to put their minority in their place. 'Cause be ARE the majority. If we can get people out to vote. XOXO

  5. If you hear of a book being banned, check it out at your library and if they don't carry it, ask why. Then buy it; buy several as gifts.

    1. Absolutely.
      Remember what we did with Marlon Bundo, the book by John Oliver? Same strategy with these banned books: make them circulate, buy them, request them. The conservatives want to make sure diversity is erased from the public sphere. We need to make sure it stays visible.

  7. So sad about all the hate and censorship. Idaho tried to pass something that would have prosecuted librarians if they checked out so-called controversial and explicit materials to patrons. Fortunately common sense prevailed and it got voted down.

  8. Having read The Bluest Eye, I'm still gobsmacked that anyone would ban it. I don't understand the criteria. And All Boys Aren't Blue is a truly beautiful book. This is weird. Like some strange universe I never used to live in. What is it? 1952? Glad librarians are united on this and fighting the good fight. I'm not going back in the closet, dears. There's no place to charge my phone.

    1. I have read banned books now and in the past and confused as to why they were banned. If someone is offended by something and want it banned, next thing you know, the bookshelves will be empty, movies theaters will shut down, and the tv airwaves will stop. Music would stop. Museums will be baron. Where does this stop??? Everyone at some point is offended by something in their life. Normal people don't make a big stink over it. Take it in, grow up , pull up your little kiddie underpants and move on is my advice to those haters.

    2. Oh, but you know that for conservatives it will ALWAYS be the fifties.
      In the fifties the little women knew their place and the faggots and the colored knew theirs. They don't like progress, or open discussions of race and sexuality. They want to silence us at any price.
      Like you and Maddie say, their only criteria is to stomp out diversity. And they make a stink out of it because grievance is their only weapon. Think of the children!
      I will always call their bullshit. Always.

      XOXO

  9. I'm like Pat!!! Don't get me started.

    I love the post and agree with all your points. Some days no matter how much we try and fight, I feel as though we can never win and I'm tired. I'm tired we are fighting and trying to mend these things for no reasons, when we, well not we, them, need to be getting the real issues and concern of this county in order. And I'm tired of the dumb shits who keep voting these idiots in. I'm like JM when he posted, some days I feel like just giving up on all of it, but then I will be mad if they win. I'm so tired of fighting and waiting for real issues to be fixed. Those assholes least concern should be who's having sex with who, who's reading what, trans kids and young adults joining a sport team, and what is going to be taught in sex education class. I made it this far in life, and I'm just fine!!! In the long run, they will lose. But I have no patience. I want to just drag them out and hang them with real strong cheese wire.

    Too put it simply...I'm just tired.

    1. Oh, I feel you.
      It's grievance after grievance after grievance with the Repugs and conservatives. No substance, all noise. But I think that's their intention: the American public in general is not very smart and politics for many is a popularity contest. Prom, all over again, but at a national level. And Conservatives (and the religulous) are always trying to silence any voices that are not theirs: their aim is to tire us. Their aim is to silence any voice that talks about diversity and inclusion and the right to fuck whoever and whenever we want.
      But I won't give up. I'm going to talk about their fuckery in this blog until I get blue in the face. I don't care.
      I will forever call out their fuckery and will work in any little way to get people riled up to stop them. Deep down, I feel they're a loud minority. And I'm ready to fight those motherfuckers.

      XOXO
