Greg Mania

Getting our 'first place' is always amazing. I feel that the need to carve our own spaces is probably atavistic. I am one of those people who needs to feel ownership. I've always had my 'corner' or my 'room' or a whole pace dedicated all to myself (just like this blog).

I think being surrounded by the things we love and care about is a human need. I think that's why I do this series: because I feel that these people I showcase give us a little bit of themselves when they show off the spaces they have so lovingly curated. Some of them are big, some are small and most of them inspire me. Not because I want what they have (well, I do sometimes covet some of the bathrooms, to tell you the truth) but because they make me appreciate what I do have.

Would I change some of things I have? Of course I would! I would trade up from Ikea to CB2 in a heartbeat if I had the money and the space. Duh. But meanwhile, listening to Greg talk about his first space, the one he absolutely owns, makes me appreciate my basement garden apartment even more. I do love my space. And it's not half as gay as it could be.

XOXO

P.S. Having your own place really kicks ass.

  1. I love that pink couch, how he displays that towering column of books, and the office chair pillow that looks like a library card!

Very quirky, yet stylish stuff. I think he chose things that spoke to him, which is of course, the right thing to do!

  3. Indulgent... that is a good word for this gentleman. I don't know his background, but... yeesh. I don't know if this is actual privilege or assumed privilege, which is something people who come from crappy childhoods sometimes adopt in order to make themselves feel better. It is VERY prevalent in the gay community and irks me to no end. I dislike all the pastels, but... I love his place. It is very me. I like the organization, the simplicity and his use of color (BUT WHY MFing PASTELS???) He's interesting and a bit taken with himself. Oh, well... aren't we all? I mean, if we aren't our own best fan, how can we expect others to like us? This? This vid pushed a lot of buttons in moi! Kizzes.

    1. Oh, he's white and cisgender, so duh.
But he seems to have overcome some couch surfing and some hard times (he's openly queer, after all). Crappy childhoods make for good writing fodder and he used that. Smart.
I love the pastels and the idea of using well the space.
And if we don't love ourselves, how in the hell are we gonna love anybody else, right?

    Big says,
Well, my, oh, my.... Yeah, if he's in NYC, he's making bank with his writing. Good for him that he's able to showcase who he is (though I dare say, i sort of agree iwth upton's assessment of "privilege.") The complaining? No. As someone who is in chronic pain from a chronic, incurable and progressive disease: Save it for the times you're alone or for people who can understand your need to have the occasional "pity party for one." Everyone has issues.
But, I like his place, the use of color. And all the books. Did I mention all the books???

    1. My first thought too!
He's doing well, but it did not come easy (he's a comedian, scriptwriter and author) and I'm here for it. And he came out at 18. Not easy for a New Jersey kid. And I really like his place. He's literally created his own playpen. And yes, the books. Yay!

  5. I do love that you have your own space on the Internet, Sixpence. It is one of my favorite places to visit every Thursday. And I know your physical space is awesome from the photo tours you gave us a bit ago.

I think he says something about a gay toddler with money being the decorator. LOL And he DOES commit. I applaud commitment.

Owning a place does come with seven million strings. I think Maddie has mentioned that that's one of the reasons why she rents.

This is a very cute apartment. He uses the space well. I’m just waiting for the tower of books to come tumbling down.
