Oh, Jason...!

Here's the thing: I don't like Martha Stewart. I find her hyper-homogenized, bland, suburban, WASP-y approach to decorating and lifestyle-ing quite grating. In order to be a good host, you just need to be attentive and know your guests. No, I have never been a fan. I am not a fan of any idea of imposition of style. I abhor the woman (and her husband) from Magnolia and I can barely stop from throwing up when that woman Rachel Something pops up on my screen. I cannot deal.

So when Jason said that Martha and Oscar and Willy were his inspo, I was kind of skeptical. But he won me over. He's got his own style and his own way to doing things and that's really cool in my eyes. He's also from Minnesota, home of our dear Upton. What's not to like? And I find his curiosity and his desire to find the origin of things quite interesting. Also, I want his kitchen.

His style can be considered what people call maximalist (I know, can't wait for the 'too much stuff' comments) but I find it quite endearing and interesting and you can see how that works throughout his house (the gallery walls!) and how he has arranged furniture and his space (the whale vertebrae!) in order to make the space welcoming and warm. The kitty helps with the homey ambiance, I think.  Also, dark walls again. Darn! I'm going to end up painting one of my walls black by the end of the year!

XOXO

P.S. Blogger is being such a royal pain in the ass that I've stopped trying to fix things. Chrome wants third party cookies and trackers to 'function correctly' and to stalk me around the internet and I refuse to give in to it. So, I'll be commenting as Anon in may blogs (including my own!!). Fuck you, Google.

  1. I like Martha, post-prison. I find she doesn't take herself so seriously any more.
I like his apartment; I adore his kitchen; and I love the moody living room. I found it a bit cutesy to put dried flowers in wine glasses in the cabinets because who has that much time???? And while it's a lot of stuff and my minimalist brain tends to explode, he has some cool stuff.

    1. You know what? You're right!
After the prison stint, she seems to have become more... human? And the apartment is very cute, very 'loved', and that's always a big draw. And the wine glasses with the dried flowers is the Martha-esque kind of touch that gets to me but the rest of his place is super cool.

  2. I learned a couple of things from Martha back in the day when HGTV was in its prime. One, was how to prune Tree Peonies for maximum bloom. and, how important it is to use a level (carpenters tool) for outdoor plant containers / pots. It really does make a difference visually.

    1. Oh, she does provide practical info that's very useful.
I have read her magazine at the dentist's. What I cannot deal with is with her (or anybody's) way being 'the' way to decor/live. Too conspicuous consumption for me.

  3. Martha's aging well. She hangs with Snoop Dog. And I am really fed up with gray, of course, if you can't work with color than you'll be working with either white or gray. I have no problem with Blogger. You do know there is a microchip in your phone that records every time you go into Insta, and Grindr, and whatever other websites you peruse.

    1. You may be right.
She does hang with Snoop! I think Martha after-prison may have more street creed. And I kinda liked the whe combined gray and green. And I still love white. So crisp. As for the trackers, I use Apple products, that mostly block them and let you turn location services on and off, and I use adblock and DuckDuckGo. They do traffic with my info, but I'll restrict them as much as I can. I'm petty.

    Big says,
Well, color me cluttered. LOL. No, it's not that bad. Not really. I'm way more minimalist, though. He can keep those glass-front cabinets. No. Don't need to work that hard to maintain neat and tidy and "presentable." Never been a fan of Martha --- though her stuff with Snoop is a hoot, completely unexpected. Rachel just grates on my nerves. XOXO
P.S. Rick tells me he now uses Firefox strictly for leaving comments on blogs. Hmmmm....... xoxo

    1. Hahaha yeah, he's not even in the league of some of the people we've seen here. And I actually like those glass front cabinets! Especially because they have lights. And Martha and Snoop are a riot! Rachel is ... *barf*.
And I use Chrome just for Blogger. Otherwise, I prefer Safari.

    HuntleyBiGuy:
I’m with Big, no glass front cabinets for me. I have a china cabinet for the “good” dishes and crystal for display. The kitchen is for working and my everyday dishes.

I do like the contrast between the white kitchen and the warmth of the other, darker rooms.

As for blogger being that bitch, I use Firefox on my iPad for reading blogs, since they’re blocked on my work computer. As you can see, I can’t comment as myself. Maybe I’ll try a different browser.

I think I remember that! But the cabinets are so pretty! And they do contrast well with the rest of the house, which is sooo cute!
I use Chrome for Blogger and Safari for all the rest. I cannot comment on my iPad though. I blocked all the trackers and third party cookies cause I use it for transactions...

  6. WHAT!!!!!!!! I have Martha Stewart twice on sets of studios in the past with projects. Styling sets for photograghy and she was welcoming to all and insisted everybody had lunch together. He was actually very funny.

But I get she's not everybody's cup of tea. I can forgive you.

    1. Mind you, this coming from someone who loves Anna Wintour. My dinner parties would be the most eclectic you've ever been too. Bwahahahahaha

    2. Hahahaha oh I bet she's charismatic (I read her biography and her minions were terrified of her!) I do think she brought a sense of style to the masses that was missing.
I just don't like being told what to do. Unless it's a burly daddy in a speedo.
And I'd LOVE to be in one of your dinner parties!!!

  7. Commenting has become such a pain in the ass these days. I think I might take your approach, SIxpence, and just have a signature line. Jason looks familiar but I can't place him. I am not a fan of all those home renovation stylists or specialists either. Mostly because I am going to have to spend some money if Mrs. Shife feels inspired after watching them.

    1. And I thought it was only me!
It's because browsers are using so many trackers and third party cookies. WE are the currency they traffic with and restricting our info pissess them off.
HAHAHA and you do have to admit that Mrs. Shife may have awesome taste once she decides that she'd like to have a kitchen like Jason's!

  8. I can't stand Martha, Joanna and her neanderthal, don't get me started on Rachel. But Jason!! Oh my, so turned on by him. He can maximize my space, needs to maximize my space

    1. Oh, same.
Martha does have some things that can and are useful but the Magnolia woman? Can't with her. She and her husband give to some very homophobic churches. The husband does have that rough trade air about him. Yes, he could maximize my space, too.

I love his taste in colours!

  10. Too much stuff on top of stuff on top of stuff. It's like a really well organized garage sale minus the price tags. But... you had me at Minnesota. Kizzes.
