the Binary

A common quest among all cultures for an explanation of the most basic, and the most challenging questions of life and the human condition has always existed. The word Mythology itself is derived from the Greek word “mythos”, meaning story of people, and “logos” which means speech.

The study of these stories of creation, good versus evil, life and death, god and the afterlife is Mythology. All cultures have uniquely expressed their beliefs and values through timeless fables. It is left to the reader to interpret each myth and decipher the underlying lesson within the winding and colorful tale.

Much has been made by Transphobes and TERFs of the gender binary and its immutability. Their belief is that they are 'gender critical', and they conveniently forget that gender has been seen differently by different cultures during millennia. I feel sorry for them, but not too much. Their vitriol literally costs lives. It's more like it's willful ignorance (even coming from the ones that seem to have a varnish of culture/education) and that kind of makes things even worse. I should remind myself that I met MENSA members that were flat earthers...

The thing is that a long established thread and very possibly an essential part of many cultures has been to present challenges to the binary. Mythologies have always been part of human life, of course, and used to explain events and the human condition itself and they have always included characters that do not conform to gender tropes and that embrace the duality of creation as seen by many peoples. Intersex, gender non-conforming, androgynous and basically trans figures have been part of the way peoples have explained their world and were known to advise warriors or kings. Classical myths also offer many examples of gender-bending deities and gender fluidity as a sign of power. Trans folks are not a XXI century invention. TERFS, on the other hand, are.

I do think that colonialism, nevertheless, has contributed to the discrimination of gender non-conforming and Trans individuals the most. Western colonialism has imposed the gender binary to a reality that did not embrace it. Ancient gender fluidity shows us that queer, gender non-conforming, non-binary and trans people are nothing new. Subverting gender roles definitely emphasizes the need for representation of all genders. And the existence of transphobes and TERFS and the ongoing war the Talibangelists are *again* waging against people who do not conform to the binary are proof that the binary is definitely linked to colonialism, the patriarchy and just plain fuckery. I believe that all this requires reminding people that being gender non-conforming, intersex or Trans is nothing new. It's just the Last Frontier for some people with too much time in their hands and a healthy dose of bigotry.

XOXO

P.S. my personal theory (and I'm a keyboard scholar and psychologist, remember that) is that people's issues with Trans and non-binary folks stem from factors that are not related to the binary per se, but to those people's feelings, biases, fears, traumas and perceptions. It's the 'show me in the doll where Trans people hurt you' syndrome. BTW, @Debra, I have the sneaky suspicion our mutual friend totally comment-blocked me because I dared insinuate some definition was not strictly accurate LOL *twinsies!*

  1. I think people's issues with Trans and non-binary folks stems first from ignorance and the utter unwillingness to think differently than your own narrow world view. Take people as they ask to be taken. What does it hurt anyone?

    1. I agree.
It's intolerance. Their worldview just does not include 'others' in this specific permutation. And I agree that it does not hurt them in any way. Unless they have a personal bias...

    HuntleyBiGuy:
First off, kudos to the hosts on the video for pronouncing all of those names. The transphobes and TERFS are small minded, hateful people that cannot understand complex issues. They don’t understand that the existence of transgender and non-binary individuals has no bearing on their quality of life. Get over it, the world is made up of a beautiful bouquet of people of all colors, genders and sexes. As Bob said, accept people for who they are.

Yes, they came prepared. It's PBS! And yes, TERFS and transphobes are indeed small minded and hateful. They choose NOT to understand, which is worse than being ignorant. Much worse.

  3. Religion needs to be emphasized as a culprit since the 2 monotheistic mythologies have a deity that has decreed humans need to go forth and multiply: it's all about breeding.

What surprises me is that one of the most transphobic people I've come across is totally against religion. There's more to bigotry than what jumps to the eye.

  4. Excellent video and post, thank you! Western Colonialism's ideology of Christianity was/is steeped in misogyny, racism, homophobia and antisemitism and its view of any culture (including its own) cannot be trusted. And hey, glad to be twinsies with you with you any day!

It's a topic that's close to me. I have several Trans and non-binary friends. And yep, colonialism is an evil to reckon with (as is his incestuous brother, white nationalism). And yes, twinsies! I cackled when I noticed that LOL

    Big says,
Oh, the "christian" culture has done away with all manner of things over the millennia. Take a gander at the documentary "Intersexion." Nonbinary have been a product of nature since forever. The Talibangelists are now determined to rid the country of any and all who do not conform to their particular ideology of exclusion and are ready to run things under their own brand of Sharia Law. 1. I'm going to have to check that documentary out! Thnx, Big.
And the religulous wrong has double its efforts in what concerns Trans people because they think they'll do without gay marriage after they did away with Roe V Wade.
      It's the xtianist taliban.

  6. Until one is in the personal shoes of a trans person, they should stop being ignorant and keep their words and thoughts to themselves. They have no idea the path these people go through to get to their final destination, which sadly, many don't make it too.

"a keyboard scholar and psychologist" When do I get to lay on your sofa and put it out there?

    1. Absolutely.
I know Trans people and it makes me mad when people just sprout bullshit about them. 'Choosing' to be Trans to get in the other gender's bathroom or win at sports are the most stupid explanations I've heard.
And dear, a session with you would need to be documented. Carefully documented.

  7. Very interesting. But they forgot to put Bible among myths, because Bible too is a myth. Christianity itself is nothing more than currently believed mythology. And speaking of querr or non-binary characters, here is my contribution on the priests of the goddess Cybele here
And here, even more interesting, about the Festa dei Femminielli, with rites still connected today with the goddess Cybele.

    1. You are correct.
I think they were going beyond two thousand years ago, but your connection is correct in more than one ways: most of what we know from xtianism today is a patchwork of ancient beliefs packed in one book.
All those goddesses and festivals went to hell when xtianity took over. They couldn't take it.

  8. If I hear one more gay man say that they are sick and tired of all this gender nonsense I am going to pitch a total meltdown. Yesterday... someone I respect and love said such a thing and I just cut them off... this is about who these people are... that's like someone coming in and saying... oh, you're not gay, you're straight. No, dears... this is for them. This is who they are. We need to respect it. We need to honor it. These are not children wanting more attention... these are people defining themselves. Let them. It has nothing to do with us, except that we need to listen and be respectful and honor their wishes. Kizzes. I missed a day???

  9. Oh yes.
Gay men complaining about other LGBTQ people makes me stabby, too. Fools!
People just are too invested on OTHER people's fucking lives. Ugh.

And did you miss a day?
