Tiny Tuba

I've been joking with Maddie forever about wanting an Airstream and go glamping. All joking aside, I think it would be fantastic. I wish I would have the time and the SUV to drag a Bambi and drive around the United States. But it may not be all wine and roses and sunsets in California, as Kyle made me see in this video.

You see, he bought an Airstream and remodeled it. He has documented the process in @tinytubatropper and it's both adorable and overwhelming. Adorable because I DO want an Airstream. Like Maddie, for me is glamping or nothing. I'm not a tent-in-the-mud kind of boy. I was a Boy Scout already, thankyouverymuch. I'd like to drive around the country for vacays but do it in style. And overwhelming because it is a LOT of work. I'd have to quit my job to remodel anything!

The idea of owning an RV is not something that occurred to me before. I have been in RVs and I've been around the country in one, but owning one? Never. It's a lot of care and I'd need an SUV or *gasp* a truck to tow it. Too much gasoline for me. I also think you need tons of free time and a nice, secure storage for your baby. I am not parking an Airstream just anywhere!

But the results Kyle got are impressive. I have to confess that the final product looks fantastic: clean lines, spacious, well appointed. I'm very tempted,  gas guzzling SUV needed to tow this beauty be damned!

Wanna do a road trip?

XOXO

  1. HOW FUN IS THIS! Wow. I am impressed. That interior is to die for - difficult to keep clean, I bet, but gorgeous all the same. I love all the room. Some campers are so cramped. And the older the model, the more molds and funky smells you have to deal with - that is the main issue when buying used. I don't see myself having the mechanical patience to deal with something this size. There are small campers - Scamps was one popular model, but they don't make them anymore. For me? It's about headroom and elbow room. And, as long as there are facilities close by, I don't need a bathroom - just more bother and issues. This is nice. They did a nice job. Thanks for sharing! Kizzes.

    2. I agree!
I love Airstream campers, but rehabbing one can be a LOT of work. I do think he did a fantastic job. It feels serene and clean inside. He went down to the bolts, too.
OMG I just googled 'scamp' and I WANT ONE OF THOSE! SUV be damned!

  2. I could travel like that, or even in an RV, but trying to refurbish one??? That would take some doing and either Carlos or I would kill the other in the process. Of course, then you drive around the country looking for the best place to dispose of the bogy.

    1. Oh, traveling like that would be awesome.
It feels like a well-appointed hotel room. And I would probably buy it, because I don't have either the capability of refurbish anything. Nope.
LOL that last sentence! It would be true, though...

  3. I'm not a tent-in-the-mud kinda gal either. But neither am I gaga for RVs. More trouble, gas-guzzling and expense than they're worth. I'd rather just stay in hotels.

    1. I have gone 'camping' in an RV. It was not bad.
But I do love me some Airstream and now I'm also a fan of Scamps, because Maddie and Upton were talking about those and they are adorable!
I like RVs and this kind of trailer because they come with their own bathrooms and are self-contained. I worry about the gas, though.
      Maybe a hybrid SUV?

I would like to try glamping. I think it would be a hoot. However, you’ve kind of got to weigh the costs. Is it cheaper to have a self-propelled RV and tow your smaller personal vehicle, or have a tow able and have the cost of a larger towing vehicle, which you are going to drive around your destination. I think the prudent thing would be to rent a self-propelled RV for a small trip and see how you like it. (I know…killjoy). Plus, with a tow able, you have to acquire a totally new skill set of backing up that MF’er. Decisions, decisions.

    1. Maybe you and Sixpence can come to the woods for glamping and see how you like campers. But who gets the middle of the full bed?!?!?

      Definitely Six, definitely.

    3. I know!
I've heard some people do rent RVs. Probably super expensive. And I do know that people do tow their own vehicle with the self-propelled ones.
And sleeping between you and Maddie? I'd need vitamins.

  6. One of my friends wants to buy one of those things when he retires and just spend his days traveling the country like that with his wife. It sounds nice, but I would like a place to call home. Not sure I could live in one.

    1. I know people who have bought one and kept a small house as their headquarters. I don't think it's a bad idea, especially if you still feel some wanderlust...
Come to think of it, it's like living in a tiny house.

  7. Well, we didn't get the airstream this year I wanted. I and two friends went in and got the camper you saw from my last woods post, and it is cute, with a bathroom and kitchenette and sleeps four. Now if just myself, I would have gotten a Bambi. And you do need the air. Those suckers get as hot as a shake and bake otherwise. I mean hot!!!! But if I continue glamping maybe in another year or two, maybe I'll look into one again. Or a Bambi, and then trade up later. I too follow a guy on Instagram from the Woods who remodels airstreams. Some of the ones at the Woods are swank as all hell.

On a related note, when my dear late aunt, and my uncle left to live in Alaska for two years after they got married, they lived in an airstream. She said it was the most miserable and coldest she had ever felt.

    1. Oh, you've got the idea of glamping in my head, darling.
And that camper was indeed cute! I think a Bambi (or a Scamp!) would be good for one or two people. And you do need air and heating. It would extend its driving life some months. And you should post the guy on Insta who does the Airstreams! Ohhhh
And your poor aunt! Alaska! I know for experience how cold it can get there. Brrrr!

  8. Just slow down enough as you pass through North/Central/West Texas and I will jump in. I will share the gas and the driving and be willing to stop any place you chose.

Will do! I've been wanting to go to Arkansas for the Baths. That's North Western Texas, no?
