Oh, Jamie....

Here's the thing: when it comes to color, I'm all for neutral or white walls.  I do like the occasional accent wall in a fantastic hue, but I like white. Hear me out: like in this apartment, I have always preferred very brightly colored artwork (even though I have a gallery wall all B&W, natch) and I've discovered it goes better with neutral or white walls. I also love how white reflects light and makes the dingiest room brighter.

And Jamie's apartment kind of supports my point: fantastic, colorful art and furniture make for a beautiful ambiance without making it all too blah. I think the bursts of color allow the eye to travel appreciate the details. I love his apartment, and those ceilings! I love what he did in the middle, dividing his entertainment center and his formal sitting room (with that bookshelf!!). I absolutely love the artwork, even that crazy lamp on the floor and the sneakers (I'd wear them STAT).

I love his kitchen and how it can be converted into a wet bar for a party in a heartbeat. I love the storytelling in his tablescapes (I love that idea) and how everything and anything in his house could keep a conversation going for hours! I also love the Fucking Squirrels in his bedroom and how he mixed pink/salmon and gray (two of my fav colors!) to make that bedroom and bathroom cozy, all with the fabulous, sleek gray paint. Bet is hard to get that finish done.

I have discovered that I also have these groups of things laying around and I only suddenly rediscover them when someone visits and we spend half an hour talking about them and where they came from and all that jazz. We surround ourselves with things we love (both inconsequential, like a little handcrafted souvenir from Peru and amazing, like a deer head sculpted in wood and covered with leather with a zipper underneath) and with things that bring us joy. And Jamie's home seems to be one of those places...

XOXO

  1. The idea that white or light gray walls make colors pop is a misconception. For proof, look at just a few of the manor homes in Europe where wals painted deep reds, and blues, and greens, with all of their paintings and works of art. Many of them also used highly decorated wallpaper. The idea that light colored walls is trendy right now, not 'de reguere.'

The manor homes usually had tapestries, better insulation. And lasting white paint is quite modern, only discovered at the beginning of the XX century. Victoria made sure all houses were dark and foreboding, but after her death it was all light.
White was favored because it meant it was neat and clean.

    HuntleyBiGuy:
The one thing that I couldn’t come to terms with is the fucking SIXTEEN FOOT CEILINGS throughout the apartment. That is too much wasted space IMHO, when you consider the current standard is about half that. And you’re paying to climatize all that space.

Getting off my soapbox, I do love what he did with the apartment, regardless of all his self-dealing. The coral accent in the bedroom blends in nicely in the bathroom. I like how he encased the pillar with storage and uses it as a space divider.

Well, it is a luxury. And did you see his car? He's not worried about the gas bill. And the coral accents are fabulous! And they make your skin look fantastic. Win/Win.
I think encasing the pillar was genius. If you cannot hide it, show it off.

    2. Daddy Warbucks had that car when he moved to Budapest...a Maserati. He had me drive it once when he got drunk in New Hope, and I was so scared to death I would dent it while parking the bitch. But will say it is the smoothest, quietest ride I ever had in a car. Lord knows how much it was to get to Europe.

  4. I love this apartment. I want that kitchen STAT! As for white walls, not a single one in our house is white, i n fact the powder room is black.

    Big says,
Love it! But I do agree with Huntley about the ceiling height ('course he is in the penthouse!). Ours are 12-foot everywhere (foyer is 14) and I don't think I'd go that high again. Love that painting - GIVE ME!! 🤣 We have stark white walls with a few accent ones to allow the artwork to stand out. Groupings are necessary, and always in odd numbers. Grey tile and carpeting on floors allows splashes of color in the upholstery. Dang! I could be an interior designer. LOL.

I live in a house with cathedral ceilings, too. We have to call people to change light bulbs. It's ridic.
And the PAINTINGS! The one in the entrance? I've seen that painter's work at the Art Institute. Yes.
And you know what? I only have one big white wall and it IS the accent wall! LOL How funny is that?
And yes, you could be an interior designer!

  6. I agree with you about the power of white walls. I used to insist on white walls for all of our rentals. When tenants would paint them with odd colors, it always made the houses look old and cheap. White wall are clean and brilliant and the refracted light makes a room seem much bigger. Kizzes.

I've lived in rentals for a long time and white walls are super useful. You paint over them and then paint them white again. Easy peasy.
The funny thing is that I only have light walls in my bedroom. Maybe because I have plants, I like the light....

  7. I'm with you -- I've always preferred colourful art, furniture and accessories set against white/neutral backgrounds. The last time I went serious furniture shopping (8 years ago), I had a helluva time finding anything suitable because everything was so bland and neutral. I think it's because current style is to have lots of colour on the walls and in rugs etc. So furniture must be bland against it. Not my style!

I actually bought slipcovers for my sofa so I can change the color! LOL
And neutral backgrounds do set collections off. And you know Instagram has made everything oatmeal. Everything. Some of those houses they photograph to death are soooooo bland!

  8. We actually might be able to do white walls now that the kids are older and Ms. Frizzle isn't a puppy. Now I just need someone to do it for me because painting is definitely one of my least favorite things.

Oh, white walls and kids are a no-no. And do hire someone when you decide to go for it. They'll finish in a heartbeat and you avoid heartburn. Trust me, I know.

  9. I have to say, I too like white and neutrals walls, and I always recommends them in some form or level of white or neutral to people who change things around frequently or tiring of color quickly. It's less time consuming painting...instead just change out the pillows, accessories and art to your color. I myself keep most rooms off white, gray or another neutral, and most times do my bedroom in a deep navy, and kitchen in a color. I like his apartment. The entertainment center wall is a smart way to divide the room I agree. The colors aren't me, but they are lovely. But he himself lost me with that most pretentious, high Maintenace garage ever. Stuff like that use to impress when I was younger, but now all I see is snotty establishment high maintenace and prissy queens. Now if he has a big dick and knows how to use it and is a good kisser, I'll be more impressed. Oh dear, I'm stabby tonight.

Colorful accents are easier to move around than deep green walls in the living room. I do like accent walls, though. Either wallpaper or paint.
The garage is a thing, though. But hey, you know people and their symbols. And I bed daddy is packing. That bedroom tells me that he likes to have fun.
