Omar Apollo: Tiny Desk Concert

Oh, hi.
To celebrate Latinx Heritage Month and because I'd let Omar Apollo hit it day and night, here's his Tiny Desk concert for NPR. Love me some NPR. Have you donated

From Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Tiny Desk is celebrating Latinx Heritage Month with an "El Tiny" takeover, featuring Jessie Reyez, Susana Baca and more musicians from all corners of Latinidad. Fi O’Reilly | September 15, 2022 What a way to get our second annual El Tiny series going! Omar Apollo kicks off Latinx Heritage Month with a full-band rendition of "En El Olvido," backed by Las Mariachis Lindas, as he channels a childhood spent listening to Juan Gabriel into his performance of the Mexican corrido. In the eternal wisdom of Alt.Latino co-host Anamaria Sayre, it's not a Mexican party until someone starts crying, and Apollo embraces esta melancolía as the band slips into the easy R&B number "Evergreen." "We're about to get more sad," he says to the crowd with a grin. Despite the heartbreak and unrequited love songs, there's a sense of ease in this Tiny Desk concert — an easy camaraderie among the group as the members sing through "Evergreen" and "Petrified" before finishing with the (slightly) more upbeat "Endlessly." El corazón puede estar adolorido, but in community, the pain never seems hopeless. As Apollo's Tiny Desk comes to an end, he offers the audience a homework assignment for self-improvement, for putting the negative behind you and making yourself available to participate in building community: "I want y'all to think about something,” he says. “I want you to go home, I want you to meditate and I want you to just burn the bridge." He laughs. “I’m playing!” But as his and the band’s joyful energy attests, in the world of Omar Apollo, there’s only room for building each other up. SET LIST “En El Olvido” “Evergreen” “Petrified” “Endlessly”

Got tequila?

P.S. just a reminder that this is a country where Latinx immigrants and asylum seekers are dehumanized and used as political pawns by the Repugs. We will have elections soon, and like clockwork, immigration suddenly becomes important again. But please notice that the cruelty is not a bug, it’s a feature of the GOP.

Wow he’s got a great voice and an easy style. And yes, he’s hawt!

I’m not sure where I saw it, but someone noted that the GQP should now be labeled as a hate group. I totally concur with that label.

    1. Yes!
The voice. The style. Everything. And he's got a great personality too, and he's aware of his roots. What's not to like?

GQP is right. It's the QAnon party now.

    Big says,
Nice stuff and a great way to celebrate. Watched Part 1 of "The US and the Holocaust" --- we've been here before. So much so that people were deported to Mexico - some of whom were actually natural-born US citizens - based solely upon appearance. We are an ugly nation and have no right to be claiming otherwise. 1. Oh, yes.
We've been here before. But history tends to repeat itself if people do not learn. And the US in all its incredible entitlement has learned nothing from history.
I went to the Museum of Mexican Art here in Chi and saw an exposition about how the US deported millions of Americans to Mexico just because they 'appeared' to be Mexican. The US is indeed, ugly.

  3. This is the only reason I hate politics. Politicians use these issues and many more come election time to get re-elected......yet while in their terms nothing gets done on these issues. It's too much power over people to get them to vote for them and then give us false hope. I hope if Biden runs again...that he gets way more seats in both branches....otherwise I shutter if he doesn't...and then after him we get another asshole GQP.

But I am going to listen to Apollo on my lunch...I enjoy his music.

    1. Oh, the Repugs are pulling all the stops on immigration again. Why? It's elections time. They always bring one of the boogiemen when it's voting time. If it's not LGBTQ people is immigrants. Like clockwork.

And Omar is totally worth a listen. Recommend.

    1. Nice. Love the Tiny Desk Concerts! Since I don't know Spanish, I had no idea what he was singing about until he got Evergreen. I really liked the style, kind of jazzy at times.
