San Miguel de Allende

I was talking to my one friend's daughter and the conversation veered towards her job and how she really wanted to be considered for manager of one of franchises she works for. She's starting her career (she's in her early twenties) and we brainstormed some things she could bring up when she had her interview.

We also talked about how her boyfriend told her that she needs to consult with a financial adviser to start planning her retirement. I totally agree with the boyfriend. The sooner you start, the better. I am one of those people who are not too inclined to dwell on money (the acquisition of it, the hoarding of it) but even I know that planning for the future is important. And after watching this video, I want to retire in San Miguel de Allende.

The idea of taking a place that was literally white walls and making it something like this really is a labor of love. Not to deny that you’re building the future, so everything there will be used and used again. I know of people who have moved to cities that are old and I love the imperfections and quirks that that entails. This is a beautiful house, but what I liked more is that they made it their house, with the little details that you can add when you’re really invested in building something.

I don't know when I'm going to retire (I learned the retirement age at work is 67 and you have to put up with them for a trillion years!) but what I'm thinking is that retiring outside the United States sounds like a good idea and going to live in a place where my money is going to really count would be the way to go. Also, if on top of that I could get something really nice the idea is very appealing. Not like I'd be able to have a house like this one, but a boy can dream...

  1. it is essential to think about the future as soon as possible, even in the distant future. Because, sooner or later it arrives.
And the villa in "San Muguel" is really beautiful, but it would be too big even for a family of 4. And don't forget that the bigger a house, the harder it is to keep and maintain (I mean effort, work and money, of course).

    1. I agree.
And it's something I have been thinking about more and more lately. Seriously. As for the Villa, it's very nice. I think they do have the means to maintain it and will probably use it to host family and friends. I know I'd love to be invited.

  2. San Miguel de Allende is one of my places to retire to; I love everything about the town except that it's isn't near an ocean, but the town, the food, and the art scene are stunning.

Same. Somebody I know did a semester abroad there and they can't wait to go back. And to go to the beach, we'll just have to do Cancún.

    HuntleyBiGuy:
This is a magnificent house and the workmanship is fantastic. I love that they used local craftsmen for their project. They really have appointed it well and made it cozy, for its size, and the view is beautiful. But I agree with Xersex, it is huge for two (7 bathrooms, really?) and the the upkeep would be astronomical.

I’d settle for a cozy apartment with a nice big bed.

    1. I was amazed at how they made it look like it's been there FOREVER.
It's protected, so they could not change the exterior, but the craftsmanship of the interior! Love.
And they have the dough, of course.

    Big says,
It's a stunning place. If they utilize 1/10th of it on a daily basis I'd be surprised.
Our plan is to retire outside of the country. Right now we're looking into Valencia, Spain (I must be near water!).
Her boyfriend is spot on. Start stashing money now. The biggest reason: If the Rethugs take over, SS will be on the chopping block. At the very least they would like to make it "expiring legislation," something that would have to be voted on every 5 years to keep it in place (one proposal would require a vote of congress ****every year****). Plan and stash now! XOXO

    1. I think they entertain a lot.
And they probably have people over constantly. I'm sure it's not wasted.
And Spain is stunning. My friends keep trying to convince me to visit. Really.
As for the money, I agree. The sooner we start, the better.

  5. San Miguel de Allende looks lovely. Mrs. Shife have talked about where we would like to retire a lot more recently but we still have about 20 years to go. A lot of our choices will depend on where the kiddos end up calling home once they leave the nest.

    1. Oh, same, Mr. Shife. It's a long way for me too.
I do have more freedom when choosing when to retire, though. And I am thinking more and more outside of the United States...

  6. I love that house. Way to much space for me though. I wonder why people want such huge homes and spaces they most likely will not use much? In my mother house we have two bedrooms we never even step foot in, and a Billiards room with everything covered up. BUT that bedroom in the video is sooooooo me. Loved the whole vibe of it and style.

And you know they probably have people over constantly. I'm sure there's a waiting list and that all the rooms are used. And I agree about that bedroom. A dream.

  8. We all put our energies where it is most important for us. I had some guilt about not putting more effort into my surroundings, but that's simply not a priority for me. I just realized that every damn thing in my house, except my bed, is a cast off. It's something somebody else was done with and I saw that it had value, so I figured out how to use it. Isn't it odd that I never realized that? Our focus goes where it gives us the most pleasure. Thank you for sharing this. Wishing your friend's daughter the very best. Kizzes.

    1. Well, I think you're being smart.
You see, upcycling is fantastic and it's good for the environment. It shows you're creative and resourceful. Between us, much of the stuff I have in my place is recycled, reused and repurposed. The only 'new' thing I have is an IKEA sofa that I make over with a sofa slipcover every season. Really.

  9. I don't know if a person can adequately prepare their finances for the future. I know that when I retired in 2006 it was with a more than adequate financial arrangement. The passing of time and the increasing cost of living have made it less so. These days, as soon as I see the word luxury I know I can not afford it. My goal was to retire at 50 and move to Baja California. The fates seem to have had something else in store for me. I did manage to retire at 58 (I am now 74) but Baja morphed into rural North/West/Central Texas. A town of less than 5 thousand people, all very friendly and neighborly but definitely not on the Pacific Coast of the Baja Peninsula.

    1. I agree with you!
I may work past my retirement age, I think. And we all work with what we have. You may not be in Baja, but you are in a place that's nice and affordable and you feel comfortable. Now, please, make sure you vote Abbott out.

      XOXO
