Oh, Nikk !
What better way to get into the All Hallow's Eve mood than talking about a house that is quite an achievable example of Dark Academia?
Dark academia is a literary and social media aesthetic and subculture concerned with higher education, writing/poetry, the arts, and classic Greek and Gothic architecture. The subculture is associated with ancient art and classic literature.
So think Harry Potter. It has become a thing in social media (and @NikkAlcaraz is a content creator, natch) but I find this aesthetic quite appealing, especially in the fall. Even more so close to November 1st because I enjoy Día de los Muertos even more than All Saint's Eve. I also think it's super cool that someone would find inspiration in a $20 painting found in a thrift store and turn a whole house into a Dark Academia example just based on that.
I like how people 'rediscover' aesthetics and styles that just a few years ago were considered tacky or just plain unfashionable. Take that floor to ceiling lamp or the Jadeite dinnerware. I am positively in love with the dinnerware, by the way. That color!!! And what about the use of color on the walls? This one will keep those who do not enjoy neverending white walls happy. I'm sure.
Highlights besides the Jadeite? The Tartan wall, the thrift store finds that would actually make sense in the kitchen and the idea that he convinced his landlord to get that refrigerator. Yep, puppy dog face has its advantages.
XOXO
P.S. Nikk is always ready for All Saint’s Eve:
Nikk's @pracicalpeculiarities if a fun romp through Dark Academia, too! Talk about practicing what you preach.
I can't understand what Greek culture has to do with the Gothic one. They seem so distant from each other ...
ReplyDeleteVery beautiful and absolutely autumnal spirit is that home, even apart from the Halloween & All Saints.
I think that it has to do with aesthetics, mainly.
DeleteThink about the scholarly influence of the Greeks and the complicated architectural details of the Gothic era. It's about influences, not direct correlation, I think.
And yes, the home is totally a mood, even out of this context were in right now...
XOXO
Precisely aesthetically, Greek art has more links with the neoclassical period, especially in architecture. In Europe we call empire style (for Napoleon, the first 20 years of the 19th century). In the US I don't know what name it has: perhaps colonial. The style in which the White House was built (the style from about 1785 to 1835).
DeleteI like this one; I love the dark walls, and I LOVE those drawers built into the closet. Love the mixing of plaids, and even love the kitchen though it's a bit tiny.
ReplyDeleteYes!
DeleteThe closets seem actually pretty custom. Very ingenious. The dark walls were a surprise, same as the kitchen.
The whole house is surprising, because I think this could be a quite pedestrian apartment without all the work.
XOXO
I like the color. He doesn't really know what he's talking about though when it comes to styles, saying things are Victorian when they're actually early 20th century.
ReplyDeleteIt's a very bold use of color.
DeleteAnd Victoria died in 1901. Victorian influence and reactions to it can be seen even in the twenties and thirties. He may not be all that wrong...

HuntleyBiGuy:
ReplyDeleteOk, my first impression was that the home was too dark, but the more he got into the tour, I was OK with it. It’s very Addams Family-esque. The contrast in the kitchen was quite an eye opener. I love the vintage looking refrigerator. The plaid in the bedroom is a real nice touch. And it looks like thrifting is the way to go, better than Wayfair and the like.
XOXO 👨🏼❤️💋👨🏽
I think the mistake was the cameraman's and the crew filming.
DeleteIn the screencaps on youtube you can see more details. Kinda amateurish for the channel, TBH.
And yes, very Addams Family! And thrifting is super cool. It does add that touch of uniqueness...
XOXO
Big says,
ReplyDeleteNot crazy about all the black walls and ceilings, but it works! Yes, it does. It's a conglomeration of periods and styles that keep it all interesting and fun. Little touches like the eyeballs (I have some of those). (I note the coffee table, the base to the dining table, and those 70's plaid pants) I do have to agree with Dave...this kid really does not know his styles. Did he say Picasso painting? LOL. Well, he's making good money at it, so who am I to say he doesn't know what he's talking about? XOXO
Same!
DeleteIt's very moody and I like it. Especially in California. The Dark Academia style is very versatile, too. And I think he may have meant Picasso-style? I think he said he thrifted it. And his channel seems to have good movement. He probably can make a living with it. Not to mention that he probably does commissions.
XOXO
He has some beautiful and fascinating possessions in his place -- the jadeite and pole lamp caught my eye immediately too. But I would find living in such a dark and gothic space on a continual basis to be oppressive, moody and depressing. My favourite thing in this whole video is his ladybug caprese appetizers!
ReplyDeleteOh, the jadeite was the highlight for me.
DeleteLove that color! And the contrast of green and all that dark? Love. And I think he can easily live there because it's so sunny outside all the time. It's California, I think. So it's probably quite soothing.
Oh, the things he makes are fantastic!!
XOXO
Besides the Dita Von Tesse house you shared... this one might be my favorite. This is the closest to my own style yet. I LOVE the black walls and ceiling. Can you imagine popping bright colors in pillows and accessories for the spring and summer? It will brighten it up without sacrificing the dark warm feel of the autumn and winter times. And I bet it is stunning at Christmas. And that little mosaic lantern he has I have two of those in two sizes...they give the best glow...and I think I had the exact same pant he had on too!!!! I have in my last place, used dark colors and then leave one room white, like my living room. Gorgeous place. And I think also thrift items are very inspiring.
ReplyDeleteNow how do I get him naked and into bed to spoon...among other things......
See, I even take this post to ground zero.💋
Isn't it cool?
DeleteThe dark walls and ceilings are a mood. For a person who is not an interior designer, he did very well. I agree that sparkling accessories would totally change the mood and setting of the house.
Loved the little lamps too. The white kitchen was a surprise and a delight. And I can just see you in those pants! LOL
XOXO
