Queer Modern Horror

Ok, so now that I'm on an All Hallow's Eve mood, let's talk about our fav queer or queer adjacent horror movies. Gay characters (whether coded or no) do form part of the horror canon. Here's my top ten this year. I’ve already watched four of these:

This was one of the first all-queer, no apology horror movies I watched. I re-watch it every year. Recommend.

Oh, this movie is such a good thriller! More Hitchcock than Wes Craven, it made me scared of cruising wild, deserted areas, too.

Oh shit. This one is ver David Cronemberg, with plenty of body horror. Very, very strange. Very, very interesting and visually stunning. In case you're into that kind of thing.

Remember when all gay context was coded? Well, here's a perfect example. I love this movie. I actually like it better than the remake with Natassia Kinski.

Oh, I watch this one every October. You just KNOW Michael and David just need to get it on and you wish they did...

Duh.

Coded or not, this is essential viewing. For real. Everything: Elsa, Boris, that story. Everything.

Deneuve, Bowie and Sarandon in fantastic 80's form. Also, an allegory for AIDS. Yes, please! Besides, this could be the coolest and most stylish horror film out there.

In Nightbreed, Clive Barker goes full-on queer. Everybody thinks about Hellriser, but I prefer this one. Also, it's quintessentially 80's.

OMG this fucking movie. I got PTSD when I saw a Babadook at pride the year this movie came out! Strongly recommend, though. Trauma is a bitch.

And you, Constant Reader, what are your go-to movies during scary movie season? What MUST I watch?

XOXO

  2. [off topic: It is true that there is a gay version for everything, even horror stories. And this is because gays are everywhere.]

    Big says,
"Rocky Horror" is a MUST. "Lost Boys," yeah. But, let's see.... All I can come up with off the top of my head: "Cruising." It had an effect on...well, cruising. XOXO

  5. I've seen 7 of the films on your list. The weakest by far is The Hunger. Who'd have thought trendy vampires could be so boring.

  6. I picked two off your list to watch this weekend, in the dark, alone, in the dark, oh my!!!

  7. I've only seen 3 of these -- Rocky Horror, Bride of Frankenstein and, a million years ago, The Hunger. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of horror, even mild non-graphic horror like these movies.

  8. I have seen three on your list. I might have to revisit Night Breed because I don't remember it well and you prefer it over Hellraiser. I haven't watched the new one and I am not sure I will. Kyle has expressed interest in watching a horror movie so I am searching for a good one to introduce him to the genre. Right now we landed on Sixth Sense but that doesn't really fall into the horror category.

  9. Babadook is my fave. We even named the last feral cat we rescued Babadook - his new owners changed it... he is now Sammy. You got them all. I would love to pop some corn and watch each and every one!

  10. Well, you had me the whole way up to the Hunger. I have seen them all up to that point. I thoroughly enjoyed Hellbent. I also enjoy another called Dead Boys Don't Scream. Scary and almost soft porn. But for Halloween...I'm pretty classic, with the tried-and-true classic like Dracula, Frankenstein anything with Vincent Price. The Haunting. The Shinnning. Of course, the new classics too like Season of the Witch, Halloween, Insidious and the like. I watch only horror in this month. I've seen some doozies. Animal, the Deep House, The Accursed. Chills honey. I could have used you Six.

I also watched the first season of Chucky and loved it. The two leads are so cute as a gay couple...but the second season so far has been...... meh.
