Oh, Javier...

I think one of the things that is most difficult to achieve is when you step into a home that's supposed to look one way due to the geographic place it is located or to the idiosyncrasies you assume the person who owns it it's gonna have and you get a full-on surprise once you're inside. This was my case with this house. I could not have predicted it was going to look like this, taking into account it is in Texas and that it was a renovated house.  I don't know if you know, but Texas is not one of my favorite states.

I kind of like his layering and his little vignettes (I sometimes do the same when I group things on surfaces) but I'm sure it's not everybody's cup of tea. It looks fantastic (and expensive) in his house and it's ver Ralph Lauren, a little premeditated and a lot luxe. The advantage of showing off your trinkets/art is that we would have a conversation piece every three steps in our house. The turtleshells? He could keep them.

Love the fireplace, though. Love, love, love! But Texas?? Who knows. Maybe the evenings are chilly? I love the idea of buying things in big, luxury stores when they go out of business. I have some stuff that I got from my manfriend that he bought when Bloomingdale's went out of business in Chicago. Those pieces are actually quite substantial and 'nice', if you know what I mean.

Love the dining room (that color on the walls!) and I love what they did to the house. Again, one of those before/after moments that really tell you how the place looked 'before' and 'after'. Love the little bar and that ceiling, too! Same with the kitchen, which now has actually a personality. And that bathroom? Holy shit! The before/after is a world of difference. One thing though: having a different theme every month for entertaining? I would go nuts and would end up screaming at people. Seriously.

I actually agree that you need a fan on the ceiling, though. I also kind of like the idea of using the ceiling as the fifth wall. The bedroom looks cozy and moody. I approve, even though I am more into open, almost spartan bedrooms. And their backyard? Awesome. Really a great space and I bet it was worth a pretty penny. Leave it to the gays to have a fab backyard with a 'drinking pool'.

XOXO

  1. I prefer the outside to the inside. The garden is really beautiful. The house has, in my opinion, too many objects (look from 9:45 to 11:00, for example)

    1. Same!
Even though some details in the inside are fantastic, I love the outside. I'd love to go there to a pool party.

  2. It's a lot of stuff. I think of the living room where he says they have cocktails before dinner and yet there's very little surface to set a drink down!
But the black on the walls I love and the black kitchen with the natural wood drawers I love, and the backyard.

I was thinking that I would NOT drink anything. I'd be scared I toppled something. The black kitchen is FABULOUS. It's day/night with the kitchen the house had...

    Big says,
Too much "stuff" for me, of course. Groupings is absolutely the way to go with it all, though. But, I'll say this: If things don't speak to you or mean something to you (the hallway), then get rid of them. That kitchen...very cramped. The back yard? Oh, yes, now that I can love. The pool, the fireplace, the outdoor kitchen. XOXO

    1. He does tend to pile it up.
And even though I love his little compositions, I do agree he's got a ton of stuff. I do love his stories, though... And of course the pool!

  4. The outside is nice. The pool? In Texas that would be great. Inside? Way too much clutter, of course, he can afford a housekeeper to dust.

    1. I thought the same about the pool.
I would invite myself every fucking weekend. LOL.
And I'm completely certain he could pay that housekeeper. Yep.

    HuntleyBiGuy:
Obviously he has a concept in his head when he starts a project, since that’s his business. I do like the way he has his groupings and I love the kitchen and the master bath. But why, oh why, are you putting lamps on top of books?!?!? And I’m almost certain that he has artificial grass in the backyard. Really? And Dallas can get quite chilly in the winter. If I remember correctly they’ve had some winter storms in the not too distant past, with ice storms and the like.

    1. Oh, his house does look like a Ralph Lauren windowcase.
They have that esthetic down pat. Pile stuff up and combine new and 'old' artistically. I like it.
And I didn't know Dallas would get chilly. That would cramp the style at the pool.

  6. Odd. I wonder if its about not having things when we were growing up that make us want to have ALL the things. He's sweet, but I do not enjoy his taste. And he has too much of everything. I couldn't breathe in that house. It's weird. It's like he's a very careful hoarder. Still, I expect he will be found dead one day, buried under a pile of vintage suitcases. Kizzes

    1. Oh, we could write paragraphs about some Freudian theories when it comes to material things!
I do like his taste, but the style is a little bit crowded for me. He's got beautiful objects and furniture, but IMHO he's piled them up. He struck me as a methodical hoarder, too! And that's a death for a movie, Upton! LOL

  7. My two favorite things of this house; the kitchen I absolutely loved the whole kitchen, and what was not to like about those hanging top hot lights in the closet! That is one of the most creative things I've seen in a house. When I had my place and Bucks County I had quite a few items from defunct department stores, and they always had that special little touch, what you know you're never going to find anywhere else. I remember years ago a friend of mine, it was on the visual staff at the time.. gave me three big wooden cherub ornaments that were used in a Philadelphia store, John Wanamaker's on their Christmas trees from the late 1800s till the till 1940s. Let me tell you I treasure those things every year, most of their display items were long gone and disposed of when the May Company took over and bought out Wanamaker's. I have no idea what they're even worth, but they will be in my possession till I'm dead.

And I KNEW you had a story with something from a long gone store! OMG I would love to have those cherubs! I have been on the lookout for some stores in the Merchandise Mart here because I'd LOVE to have some of their showroom stuff!
I bet those ornaments are expensive!

    2. You being in Chicago, it would have been neat to have some mementos for Marshall Fields. Now that is one store I miss.

    3. OMG yes!
But everything was gone within hours, really. Probably half of Boystown was at that sale... LOL
