Oh, Mr. Saunders

When I was in my first year of college, I lived in literally 300 square feet, give or take. My little pied-à-terre was not as cute as this one (and I did not have the one trillion things I have now) but this one would have been a fantastic inspo had I seen it at that time. What can I say? I like small spaces and I know I can live in one.

I would love to live in New York. I'm not gonna lie. And I know that having even this kind of apartment would probably cost a pretty penny. City is fucking expensive. But it fucking pays living in the center of things. I know people run to the suburbs for space (and to be away from the 'urban' black and brown environments, but I think this one would please those who love color. Because I think that if you're going to do color, you go all the way, like Rudy did (not to be confused with tar-sweating Giuliani!). There is something about a truly on point use of paint and texture to give even the smallest space the touch it needs.

Mr. Saunders has a fantastic sense of color and knows how to mix it to make this little jewel box a treasure. I like the idea of being organized as the foundation for a good living. I can appreciate maximalism but it needs to be neat. Another thing I like? There's nothing too precious in this space: between the awesome finds, the thrifted furniture and the practical items (those Ikea bookcases I've seen in almost every apartment I've been in the last ten years). And that kitchen? It's basically what I'd need.

And who would think about a bed canopy in a studio?? What having a sewing machine and a hot glue gun can do! Ingenuity. Always comes handy. Also, books. Books everywhere!

XOXO

P.S. Rudy's Insta is adorable! @rudytheprep. Give him a follow if you'd like some inspo. Who knows? Ideas come in all sizes....

My goodness he’s done quite a lot with this space. He’s defined the various living areas well and uses practically every inch of wall space for displaying all of his treasures. He’s going to have a lot of patching to do once he moves out. I love the grouping of his grandmother’s plates.

And he can fit into his shorts from high school?!?

    1. Yep, he's done a LOT.
But he's a maximalist, and that's expected. I love, love, love his sense of color, though.

  2. Amazing use of a small space. A little "cluttered" for my taste but all in all very nice. I do think he might need a few more pair of shorts though.

It is proof that you do not need a ton of space and that small spaces can be functional and pretty. And did you talk to Huntley about the shorts??? LMAOOO
      You guys are too funny!

    Big says,
"...so you can kind of move around..." Yeah, if you don't kill yourself tripping over something. His use of color is good. That he kept the walls a soft sky blue works really well. Every color under the sun goes with that. The kitchen? With so little counter space, that table lamp there is another thing to get in the way. The bathroom? Artwork in there right above the tub... well, anywhere in that room to get full of steam when you shower? Shame on him! LOL. XOXO

Ohhh snarky! I think that people who have lived in small spaces have a special radar to not trip on shit. And his use of color is fabulous. He even wallpapered!!
I think the kitchen would fit me cause I seldom do three course meals.

  4. He said it. "What ever makes you happy." All the bamboo makes me think of The Pavilion in Brighton. I hope no one gets falling down drunk in there!

He does have an eye for color combos that nobody would think about.

  6. Too claustrophobic for me. And he painted a mahogany table? Have you any idea how expensive mahogany is? As an antique the table had value, now it doesn't.

    1. I thought it was small but not claustrophobic.
The use of color and the boundaries of the spaces kind of make it seem organized. And that was probably a find and it was beyond help. He's an interior designer working for a very highbrow design firm. I'm confident he knows his antiques...

  7. Oh, my... I think if he were a trick on Grindr and I was to walk in and find all this... I might just tell him I forgot to feed the meter and not come back... eek. Sorry... this is a boner killer, for me. He's sweet. Pat on the head sweet. Kizzes. On the other hand... that space? I want that apartment! But umm.. he can keep all his stuff.

Oh, I love the sleaze. And it's an adorable place. I'd love to be invited for tea.
And can you imagine that space? In New York??

  8. I won't lie, I got 20 seconds in the video and checked out!!!! He is very nice, I liked him. And the small apartment is lovely for him, and I, like you could live in the space...but it is WAY overloaded with things, which right away breaks the rule for small spaces. I would go claustrophobic in there within two hours!!!! It looks smaller than it is because of every square inch being used. Five tricks I always used for small spaces were either light or dark walls with white ceilings, taller curtains for the windows, making the ceiling appear higher, and the windows bigger, and the same with the canopy bed. I have always had a canopy bed for that reason...gives the illusion of higher ceiling. And MIRRORS!!!! Collages of mirrors or large-scale mirrors really give the illusion of a double the size space. And be strategic about leaving some negative space. I'm dying to get my hands of this place.

But he has to live there and be happy, not I. Even though I want to slap her silly with a bolt or two of Lily Pulitzer fabic.....

Hey, you know the gays love their Lily Pulitzer!
And you are right, it's a matter of personal taste. You know I'd have everything white and sone Scandi shit thrown in in some muted colors for good measure.

      XOXO
