We’re less than two months into 2023, and already state legislators have introduced at least 25 bills aiming to ban or restrict drag performances. These bills have varying aims, from reclassifying drag as “adult entertainment” to prohibiting drag performers from appearing on public property, but taken together, they represent a terrifying new frontier in the assault on queer and trans lives, with advocates worried that their vague language could lead to the broad criminalization of public gender-nonconformity.
At least 12 states are currently considering drag bans to some degree in their respective legislatures, according to a legislative tracker maintained by trans activist Alejandra Caraballo. This new crop of anti-drag legislation can be seen as a natural outgrowth of the hundreds of bills introduced over the past few years to demonize trans and gender-nonconforming people. Yet several emerging anti-drag laws threaten to criminalize the trans community in new, broad ways, whether intentionally or not.
Now more than ever, we have to be weary of the right wingers and the Repugs. They are coming for our right to exist, and personal freedoms, basically. I’m piggybacking here on one of Maddie’s posts because I think that artists like @sashavelour need visibility. They are right now at the forefront of a battle that the Banana Republic gays do not feel or see.
That part of the LGBTQ collective are comfortably ensconced in their suburban abodes, behind picket fences and a varnish of heteronormativity. But it’s gonna be one of those “first they came for the Drag Queens and I did nothing” moments pretty soon. They are not as safe as they think. The conservative mind is a thing, after all. The xtofascists have a vision of the world and they will not rest until the actual world conforms to THEIR cosmology. At the end of the day, being queer is an affront to their values and they’ll razor down even the most Masc for Masc faggot.

Over the years and through history they have come for us...and we will and are always ready for battle...we will take the heels off and get someone to hold the earrings, because we will slap this shit out of those crazy bitches. Fuck em! Have they not leaned yet we aren't going anywhere? And to threaten drag now will also affect trans, who use drag as a way to get into and through their transition as a comfort zone.

DeleteAs I was telling Dave, this is nothing new in the United States. And they will not stop. I just hope the Banana Republic gays do not ruin it for the rest of us. You know they always vote against our best interests.
