Susie Homemaker

I am not your average Susie Homemaker. When I get into cleaning and organizing it's because it's either a long weekend or it's I have had some free time in between projects or assignments. Sometimes I reorganize things at the end of the summer, too. So this video came kind of handy because I'm planning an end-of-spring reorganization of my space. If I like the result, you'll get some photos.

There are so many things that I have never stopped to think about when it comes to cleaning at home that this video by @rajivsurendra was absolutely illuminating:

When I dust, I use a swiffer. I dust once a week. I may have to shake my rugs, though.

I do not cook a lot, so I don't have rusty pans. But if I had one, I would buy enamel cast iron pans. And some pans can be reactive? With food? Who the fuck knew?

I wash all my dishes by hand, because in my basement garden apartment I don't have a dishwasher. I don't have a dishcloth but I use a natural sponge.

I have never sharpened my knives. I want to live in a place where a guy walks down the street asking for your knives to be sharpened! So very European.

I usually hose down my windows (from outside) but I don't think I have ever washed them from the INSIDE?

I make my bed every day. I cannot take an unmade bed. It's sloppy. Yes, you're gonna get back in bed. In twelve hours. Make that damn bed!

I flip my mattress every month. I will make my bed from now the way Rajiv does it. Promise.

XOXO

  1. When it comes to a home...I'm on par with that one.... of one Joan Crawford!!!! My friends always joke about it too. Major. Everything run like a well oiled ship. I even still have a beat stick to beat the area rugs!!!! It's a bad day if I can't run the vacuum once a day.

But Rajiv!!!! ADORABLE! I demand he get naked so I lavish his body and jewels and I then, tap that over and over and over...then we can sharpen knives, shake out the carpets, and smooth the sheets.

  2. This post and this video makes me think about the disadvantage of having a big house: you have to clean more.

    1. Absolutely.
That's one of the main reasons I like small places!

  4. Yeesh.... Our house when growing up was so clean you could eat off the floors. So, no, I am not that fastidious. It must be neat - everything put in its proper place. Used to clean (vacuum, dust, mop floors, scrub bathrooms) once per week. Physically can't do it anymore. We have a woman come in once per month. We cook, but the kitchen must be cleaned every night, and dishes put away. Nothing worse than a sink of dishes (dirty or clean). But wouldn't it be great to have a Rajiv every day??? XOXO

    1. Neat is perf.
I think that things can be clean without reaching Joan Crawford levels of fuckery. And Rajiv is gonna need a twin. Very popular, he's proven to be.

Hey, you both have smaller places, so I'm sure he would not say no. And he could flip my mattress too! Weekly, if necessary.

  6. I clean weekly, dusting and vacuuming. Sometimes I use the dishwasher, other times I do my dishes by hand, with a dishcloth.

    1. I think that comes with having pets, no?
And I do have to try a dishcloth. Really. Both you and Rajiv cannot be wrong...

  7. A swiffer, a swiffer duster on a handle and my shark... glass cleaner and bleach water. That's my power supply. How nice to live such an uncluttered life. I am envious of him. Sigh.

    HuntleyBiGuy:
It looks like Rajiv is going to be a very busy guy. So I guess I’ll have to have you come over to help with the housework. I WIN!

As you know, I took some time off work this week to clean the carpets. We have wall-to-wall carpeting in the majority of the house. So I get out my Hoover carpet shampooer, move as much of the furniture and stuff off the floor as possible and go at it. Monday was the upstairs, Tuesday was the first floor. Between those two days I climbed 128 floors, what with moving things from the 2nd floor to the 1st, filling and emptying the shampooer, putting everything back, and the next day moving things to the basement to do the 1st floor. Wednesday was cleaning the garage.

On the regular, I try to vacuum every week, because dogs, and try to dust one floor a week. I’ve got a dishwasher, so the plates and utensils go in there, but I always do the pots by hand, they take up too much space.

    XOXO 👨🏼‍❤️‍💋‍👨🏽

    1. Oh, yes.
The yearly carpet cleaning ritual. I can just see you in shorts and barefoot fighting the shampooer. And it does come with being a pet parent.

And Rajiv would make a fortune giving... tutorials on how to clean?

      XOXO
