The Silver Lake House

I don't know what I would do if I lived in a house that was designed by a world famous architect. What I do know if that I really like this house. Like many houses built at that time (and in California) the integration of the outdoor and the indoor and the use of stepping pavilions, landscaping (and water!) make this house one to look out for. Totally fab.

The fact that there's so much documentation about the house is fantastic. Can you imagine yourself going into some textbook or magazine and reading about the house you live in? I would freak out. I was amazed when I discovered the blueprints of the house I live in now. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It's the first time I've seen the plans for the place in which I'm living. You know what I'd love? To find one of those old catalogues (Sears?) where you could actually see the houses they were selling with plans and all and say 'I want this one'. And poof! there it was.

I also liked how the decor is not as manicured and/or curated as some of those houses on Instagram: this house looks and feels lived in and loved. I agree some of the furniture and art are well, very valuable, but they are used. They are not there just to be appreciated.

I would not mind living in a house like this. Definitely not. Especially in California, of course!

XOXO

It's well built and beautiful. What else do we want?

  2. Just the fact that it is in Silver Lake is a winner for me. After living in Los Angeles for 28 years there were certain neighborhoods that I developed a love for. Silver Lake is on the top of the list. I would be happy in a shack there.

It must be in a very well-to-do neighborhood, that's for sure. And I would be happy in shack there, too!

I think he mentioned that many times, period houses continue to be decorated in that period. I like that he has stepped out of that mode. The red bedroom is fabulous. And the movable glass wall is genius. Though I continue to be baffled that they don’t have a bug problem when they do that.

    1. If I might butt in. We are talking about Southern California here and the only bug problem they have has two legs and dark glasses at night.

Thanks for the clarification. Here n the Midwest you’d get mosquitoes, flys and who knows what else.

    3. I think he added touches that make the house more lived-in and less of slice-of-time show.
I also love the glass wall. The indoor-outdoor thing is very West Coast.

  4. Excellent blending of indoors to out. Or out to in. His bookshelves look like mine - for the most part, a jumbled mess. I could live there. Oh, yes, I could. I'd have to make one change and that would be to get rid of the plaid carpeting. LOL. That the plans have stayed with the home is fantastic. I'll be doing that with ours, for sure. XOXO

    1. Oh, absolutely.
It's a house that would be too large for me, but I could live there. And you must keep the plans of your house visible. I think it's such a fantastic thing to have the actual blueprint of the house on display...

  5. Sorry, that table was ugly, not exotic, and when I saw the title, I thought of the Andrew Garfield film, Beneath the Silver Lake.

If the worst you can say about the house is that you don't like a table....

The neighborhood is fab (Jon told us) but I suspected as much. And those doors! Can you imagine a midsummer get together??

  7. I like the house too! Anywhere I have lived the one thing that's always on my list that it has to have is Big windows or oversized windows, so it feels as though the outdoors are coming in. Eventually I would love to have a bungalow size house where like this house.. certain doors could slide open or windows open out so the house could become open air. Of course I would love that even more if it was at a beach. If I had a house at the beach I'd probably live year-round in a freaking square cut. And an open air home I wouldn't mind, as I don't mind the Heat and very seldom use air conditioning. It was the one thing I liked about Costa Rica when we went. Our hotel room was completely open air.

    1. Oversized windows are ALWAYS a plus.
I think It is one of things I kind of like about my basement: there's a huge sliding door and there are big windows on the one side of the space. And this kind of house near the beach? DREAM!
