Oh, BĂ©lizaire...

Oh, how so apropos is it that this landed on my inbox. But why am I surprised this was going on? Of course, trying to erase Black people and Black history is nothing new. It's just gotten much, much more blatant:

The "Stop WOKE" law was part of the national GOP’s war on what they dubbed “critical race theory” (“CRT”) designed to curtail, and even ban, discussions on race in schools. Florida is one of 18 GOP-controlled states that enacted such law between 2021 and 2022. So-called CRT bans are supported by supported by 80% of Republicans nationwide, which the ambitious DeSantis fully grasps.

Republican voters’ hostility to teaching Black history in school did not happen overnight but has been building over the past two decades. As Michael Tesler, a political science professor at the University of California at Irvine noted in a 2018 analysis for The Washington Post, in 2000, the percentage of Americans who thought too much Black history was being taught in public schools was in the single digits for Democrats and in the single digits for Republicans. Tesler noted that “Democrats haven’t changed in the past two decades. Republicans, however, are now 30 points more likely to say schools should teach less black history.”

When I was learning about BĂ©lizaire, could not help but think about the inescapable fragility of those who want to erase a past that needs to be remembered and studied because those who do not study history will be more likely to repeat it.

And for those who sometimes give me the 'both parties'...

“Black history is American history. Living history. Breathing history,” Harris, the first Black woman to serve as vice president, said at a Black History Month reception. “History that we create every day. And history that we then must teach and celebrate. A history that helps us to understand how the past has influenced the present, and potentially our future.

“And let us all be clear — we will not as a nation build a better future for America by trying to erase America’s past,” Harris continued. “This month, and all year round, we must recognize the full arc of our nation’s history.”

Biden, speaking after Harris, echoed her message about the importance of giving Americans an accurate depiction of the nation’s past.

“It’s important to say from the White House, for the entire country to hear, history matters, and Black history matters,” Biden said. “I can’t just choose to learn what we want to own. We learn what we should know. We have to learn everything, the good, the bad and the truth, and who we are as a nation. That’s what great nations do.”

When Bèlizaire was erased from that portrait, it was one of the many ways some white people try to make amends with the racism that has defined this country for more than three hundred years, while trying at the same time to find a way to explain why they do not want that history to be remembered.

XOXO

    1. It's the Jabba the Orange effect. All the GOP and the repugs are just following on the steps of what the Orange Ogre did: being a racist piece of shit.

    HuntleyBiGuy:
That’s a fascinating story. When Bèlizaire was sold, they had him painted out of the picture. How cold is that? Yes that was the culture of the time, but still. I guess it would be similar to today’s culture where you may have a group picture, but had a falling out with one of them. “I look fabulous in this picture, but that asshat Billy Bob is in it. Let’s photoshop him out!”

    1. That's what they did.
And that WAS cold. It also tells you how Black people were nothing more and nothing less than property for the white overlords. I think it differs in that the boy was literally part of the family and not an asshat, like Bob.

Oh, it is bad and getting worse. For the life of me, I cannot understand any person of color - let alone a Black person - being a part of the Republicans. Same with any LGBTQ. Why in the world do you want to be a part of something that wants to erase YOU?

    1. That always puzzled me too Pat. I know black and gay friends who voted for the Dump and or many republicans and I'm puzzled. Mind you if a republican was sane and did their job like a few... I have no issue...now they're getting to be like unicorns... and if there are any, the rest of the party is getting rid of them. Their nuts.

    2. Oh, Big.
You know there's always people that are selfish pieces of shit. They want the money and the power that they have gotten to stay with them. They don't think that the tiger is gonna eat THEIR faces. Delusional fools.
@ Mads: the tiger will always eat their faces. Cause that's what tigers do.

  5. I'd read the story in the NYT and find it beyond belief that human beings could be treated as disposables, and when they're gone they're erased.

    1. Absolutely.
It's unbelievable to us, but you know, we do show empathy and are human beings with feelings. Slavery was and will always be a stain in American history. No matter how much they try to erase it, like they did with BĂ©lizaire...

  7. I really don't know how much more of this country and bullshit I can take. Warbucks offer looks better and better every week!!!!! Of course, this is happening other places, but no where as prevalent as in the US. And it makes one feel bad for their country, when friends and readers see the US and its disease and bad habits taking over and spread it and hate all over the globe. I only think it's going to get worst and not change at all.

    1. Same.
And the thing is that in the United States, we seem to be walking BACKWARDS. Like the sixties never happened. Like the steps forward that had been taken during the Obama years mean nothing.
It can get even worse if we let the repugs be in power again.

    4. That's precisely my worry going forward. How are we ever going to move forward on anything if each Administration waste their whole term just undoing everything the previous presidents did? Will never be able to move forward and get things that we need to be getting done .. done. That's why I feel bad for Obama. Many good things he did went now to the Wayside
