The Bridge House

I was thinking about Brutalist architecture a lot after Bob posted about that house in Belgium. I really like that style, even though so many people find it too utilitarian and boring. I think it speaks of strength and lasting intentions, but that's just me.

So, it's not surprise that if I were ever to build my own house, this would be quite an accurate inspiration. I love the idea of having in our minds the kind of house we'd love to have. Does that mean we will get it? Probably not. But one can dream, no?

But look at this house, for example. Not only is the story about the house super interesting, it's the way it was built. Wouldn't it be amazing to use materials with low or no impact on the environment (no waste) and build it using nature as a guide (it bridges over a brook)?

I love how sight and sound are an experience getting to this house. It is built in such a way that you feel welcome into it (it was built from the privacy of the back -over the brook- to the public part in the front. It took more time than a conventional house, but I totally think it's worth it.

I love the spaces, I love the artwork, I love the materials and I love how light is such an integral part of this house. It's private but open for the people in the house. It's passive, as it works for you and it's part of the neighborhood without being disruptive.

I'd love to have a house like this one. Really.

XOXO

P.S. I could listen to zaddy @DanBrunn speak for hours.. gimme!

  1. I feel one person standing in a large, open space makes that one person small. Give me a 16' x 14' room with 9 foot ceilings any day over this.

This is a fantastic home! I love the way it fits into the lot and mingles with nature. There are so many outside spaces and with the moving glass wall by what appears to be the indoor dining area and opens to an outdoor dining area is fantastic design. He did a great job with low impact environmental construction. This is what we need more of, and it all doesn’t have to be on a grand scale.

    1. Same.
The indoor-outdoor feeling makes it feel much bigger. And the way they build it is my idea of great green design. And of course it does not need to be a McMansion. Ugh.

  3. I love this; everything about it, especially the idea of saving that one stream of water by building over it. It's spare, but also completely open the the outdoors and the gardens.
And I loved listening to, and ogling, Dan Brunn talk about the house, and making the sound effects of gates and gravel and wind; he's a musician and the house is an instrument.

Can you IMAGINE having a stream go through your property without damaging it? So absolutely mindful of nature. And Dan Brunn could get it. Expressive men: huge yes.

  4. Big says,
Very cool house. Not quite an engineering marvel, only in so much that the repurposed material goes. But that's a huge plus. The open spaces, the clean, ultra-modern design, the minimal "stuff"... and the light fixtures, OMG. Love those. What I didn't love about this video is what Bob did love: Listening to this guy's sound effects. Ugh. Musician or not, don't TELL me what it sounds like - pick it up on a mic and let me hear it. LOL. 1. Very cool indeed.
I think they did innovate a lot with the construction, according to what he said. They honored it. And his artwork? The well placed furniture? Loved the light fixtures too.
And I do like this man and his sound effects too! LOL

  5. I can appreciate the thought and the materials that went into the house, but I am as far from a brutalist fan as you can get. I find these homes extremely cold and very sanitarium like. I like minimalism but this is taking a way too far the extreme. But the exterior and the grounds I actually liked. At least it doesn't look like an abandoned Madhouse.

    1. Oh, I love it.
I really like that the essence of the house goes in the materials and they way they age and look. And I really want to achieve this level of minimalism. I have too much shit, Mads!!
      Love the grounds, too!

      LOL @ abandoned madhouse!!

Gosh, the way the house WORKS! It's unobtrusive, yet cohesive. It's understated yet impressive. And they way it was made! If I had the moola, this would be my inspo.

    1. but the garden is not so easy to maintain!

    2. Absolutely.
And I see there's mostly grasses and what seem indigenous plants. All very low maintenance. The driveway serves as a water collector, probably, so the maintenance should be minimal.
