An observatory for life.
I would love the idea of building a house in the middle of nature but around nature. I would love the sense of having the talent to build a house as cool as this one. And I'd love to have the money to be able to build a house around a 12000 year old boulder in upstate New York!
I think that people who take into account nature and their surroundings when building a house are possibly going to leave those houses to their family/ descendants. They are building a house that is going to last. Building a house made of sustainable materials and using alternative sources of energy? Not to mention the rain water collector? Seriously. That's a house that is going to be able to last for a long time.
I love the idea of understanding your house in such a deep way: you literally KNOW your house because you took into account so many variables when you built it. In this case, it goes beyond the color of the walls or the furniture chosen. It goes deep into the meaning of dwelling. Also, Polaris at night...
How cool is that?
XOXO
I love the design, and all the thought that goes into views and vistas, and even looking at the North Star through a handrail; and I love seeing the boulder and how it shaped the house. And of course the green aspects are amazing.
ReplyDeleteBUT I kinda wish the stone wasn't trapped in the house and was left as it has been for 12,000 years; on the land but not overtaken by the house. I feel like the stone deserves better.
And that sunken living room annoys me because it kind of limits where and how you can sit.
But the design, on a whole is stunning and thoughtful.
xoxo
I agree.
DeleteThe design is very personal and very conscious of what's around the house and where's sitting. Love that. I do like making the boulder part of the house, though. I've seen it done before, where a rock formation has been made part OF the house (a wall, a whole section) and I think it's cool.
That sunken living room is cool but I can't with the rock under it. I'd keep losing shit that falls down there.
XOXO
very well done & cool, but I could live there only for an holyday
ReplyDeleteI think I could live there permanently, but I think you're right: it may be a country house.
DeleteCountry houses are underrated. When I retire, I may go live in the countryside...
XOXO
By rights, that house should be in BOULDER, Colorado, instead!
ReplyDeleteLMAOOOO
DeleteI see what you did there, Debra!

HuntleyBiGuy:
ReplyDeleteThis is an amazing home. The views are fantastic and the amount of light in the home is astounding. I love the sustainability of the home, including the solar roof. Building around the boulder is a very interesting concept and I like that you are greeted by it as you approach the front door.
XOXO 👨🏼❤️💋👨🏽
I think it's fab.
DeleteThe ceiling is at one point, like twenty feet tall. Talk about letting the outside in. And that boulder is the star no matter where you approach this house, right?
XOXO
Big says,
ReplyDeleteThat is quite the place. But, I have questions. Like: The snow covers the roof - how much power does that provide? Unless...has he built in some heat source to melt the snow? Rain and snowmelt collects around the stone...how does he get it out? I assume some drain pipe? The "sunken" living room is really kind of useless. The open hole to bedrock? For what purpose? Oh, brother.... Green? Sustainable? All great. The best part of this: The treehouse and zip line! LOL.
XOXO
LOL
DeleteI can imagine! I think the snow slides down the roof, that's why they created it with that slope. And he mentioned that the rock looks like it's in a snow globe, so maybe they let the snow melt naturally??
The open hole to the bedrock did bother me. I think they tried to leave that rock unbothered, too (he says it's cool, so it may have some kind of geothermal purpose? I don't know!). I would keep losing things down there: earphones, toys, people...
XOXO
🤣 Losing people down there...good place to hide the bodies!
DeleteHahaha
DeleteCan you imagine?
XOXO
There's a few in D.C. I'd like to toss down there..... 😲😁
DeleteThe boulder in the house is interesting, though it reminds me too much of a scifi / horror movie: It Came From Inside the Boulder!
ReplyDeleteHahaha
DeleteOh, Dave.
XOXO
