Oh, My Partner...?
Not something we see often: a Filipino and a Native Hawaiian who are part of rival sides in a love story. Very Romeo and Julian without the sad ending. Yes, please. There are more underlying themes besides the cute story: exploration of culture, stifling traditions and the influence of colonialism. And then there’s those Hawaiian guys dancing.
Now, if you are really interested, here's a link to the whole movie. He mea iki.

Looks like a sweet story ... and no sad ending???

DeleteAnd no sad ending. That was the best.

Big says,
ReplyDeleteAs the saying goes within the (any) writing community, "There's no such thing as a new story. Shakespeare already wrote it." And to quote Tony Award winner Zakes Mokae, who I had the pleasure of working with once, "It's **always** about relationships."
XOXO
Oh, absolutely.
DeleteIt's how the story is presented. And they did a good job here. Is it Oscar worthy? Probably not. But I liked it.

HuntleyBiGuy:
ReplyDeleteWhen cultures collide. All relationships are about compromise. Those that aren’t are usually abusive and controlling.
Saved the movie for later. 😎

Correct.
DeleteAnd you'll love it, babes.

I definitely can use something without a sad ending. Thanks for sharing, Sixpence.

I have to wonder... is there only one costume designer for these gay shows? Like for all the gay shows? And do all the clothes come from the GAP? (Is that still a thing?) Here's my issue with 'gay' movies, television shows, etc. - it's all carefully pretty and blandly alike. No matter the culture it is set in... they will be wearing the same clothes, have the same hair, and behave the same. Privilege will be on display and held as the 'must' achievement. It bores me. It's bloodless entertainment. And I won't be a party to it. Again, thanks for sharing this. It's nice to know it exists, but... meh. Kizzes.
ReplyDeleteLOL
DeleteWell, I think it's pretty close to what the men in these places would wear. It's Hawaii, not Milano.
And it's pretty accurate, according to my Filipino friend. He loved to see Tagalog in a show.
