Oh, Hollywood...!
You know there’s always something there that can be done better. Especially when it comes to minorities. And it's never been truer than when we talk about the way Native Americans are portrayed by Hollywood.
All those movies and series mentioned here are awesome (I'm partial to Reservation Dogs, Dark Winds for series and Killers of the Flower Moon and Prey for movies) but sometimes it does end being like Yellowstone. And we can do better. Because he's correct: media created by non-natives only reflects what the non-natives want to see...
And Joely Proudfit is fabulous. I want us to be friends.
And now I wanna watch Smoke Signals!

People need to tell their OWN stories.
ReplyDeleteDuh.
DeleteIt's something that whitewashed Hollywood has not learned.
Shame.

HuntleyBiGuy:
ReplyDeleteHollywood and entertainment has always had a problem with non-white stories. Going back to black face up until the present as shown in this video. It’s good to see that some progress is being made on behalf of indigenous peoples. And many of these actors are 🥵.
XOXO 👨🏼❤️💋👨🏽
Well, because the stories are always told from a White, privileged point of view. It's simple.
DeleteAnd yes about the actors! More, please!
XOXO
I love Dark Winds and am ready for the new season.
ReplyDeleteI love that Native People are telling their stories themselves so we get truth.
xoxo
OMG Same!
DeleteAbsolutely waiting for the new season also. It's such a good story.
And you know that they'll do three Yellowstone before the give us another season of Dark Winds, so...
XOXO
I don't know if you've seen it, but on some reservations Native Americans are being advised to carry their identification with them because ICE only likes white skin.
ReplyDeleteOMG I have!
DeleteFucking racists. Anybody Brown is game.
XOXO
Big says,
ReplyDeleteI've seen every one of the films / series he's mentioned. Except Smoke Signals. If one watched 1883 and Yellowstone, one would see the bookends of the indigenous. And the indigenous story arc of 1923 is the ONLY thing that keeps me watching that (despite Helen Mirren, who is fab as always).
I find nothing wrong with us white folks writing about the indigenous --- the wrong part is not having them read the scripts for accuracy. Sensitivity Readers are a thing and should be used - always.
XOXO
I'm right now in the process of finding out about Smoke Signals. Very curious about it.
DeleteAnd not even Hellen Mirren would make me watch, TBH.
XOXO
I agree that people need to tell their own stories.
