Oh, an invention…?

I knew the names of TWO of these inventors but never knew they were Black. And hence lays the erasure. Also notice they flourished in the late XIX and XX centuries.

And you, Constant Reader, how many of these inventions did you know came from Black people? How many of these do you still have?

Happy Black History Month!

XOXO

  1. I think I know of at least four, the biscuit cutter being one of them, from one of the cooking shows I watch on PBS. But had no idea of all these, but it shouldn't surprises us. They are just bright people too.

And I still have many of these and always use my lubricating cup!

    1. Well, you knew more than I did.
It was a surprise to learn all this, I tell you.
And a lubricating cup???? Mads!! LOL

  2. I also knew a view but we need to see a list like this to remind us; there's this unwritten code that it's just white people making progress but that's a lie.
American history is Black and White, Native and Asian, and all other peoples too.

Whitewashing, like you were mentioning in your post. And American history a People's history. Not like the Repugs would know...

    HuntleyBiGuy:
I’m not as well versed as Maddie, but I did know a couple of the names, but not what they invented. For too long the accomplishments of these men and women have been in the shadows.

    Thanks for the education, babe!

    1. I'm telling you.
I had no idea of many of these. It's infuriating what whitewashing can do...

  4. I recently watched Chef Carla Hall's food series "Chasing Flavor" and she made clear the Black roots and origins of many American cuisine staples. Fascinating and heart-breaking at the same time how Black contributions are both overlooked and/or usurped.

    2. I agree!
Heartbreaking how whiteness tries to erase what Black people have contributed. Not surprising, but still...

  5. Big says,
That list will grow quite extensively, once again, with The Felon in power. How sad. Get those US Patents in!! Oh, wait, the Patent Office will probably close.

Cheeto is dismantling the country little by little, to sell it to the highest bidder. And he'll whitewash anything and everything that has BIPOC in it.

  6. I love this, just one questions, what's a chamber commode?

    1. Hahaha
Yes, Dave a chamber commode is, well, a precursor to the toilet, and a very... comprehensive one. It was a bookrack and a washstand, also. And now I'm trying to figure out the logistics...

Disenfranchisement and ignoring achievement, this is what happens when the narrative is controlled by those in power who feel compelled from a sick prejudice to keep a group of people in their place. :\

    1. Oh yes.
Those are two of the main weapons of whitewashing. Those in power will always try to erase the 'other' successes. We know that.
And we know the Repugs want to keep the Queer, the Little Women and the Colored in their place, so yes.

  8. I knew some names, but mostly didn’t know they were black. It takes these kinds of posts and things like Black History Month to enlighten people. Thanks!

And yes, THIS is why BHM and history in general are necessary.

  9. Very cool. Hey, sorry I haven't been around. We went from -35 last Monday to 48 this Monday. I became a hateful sow and hibernated. I hate bitter cold and could not get my act together. So, catching up today. Did you experience the same?
