Oh, Case Study House #16..?

I’m all for this cause I’m a Mid Century junkie.

I really like the idea of one, conservation and two, beauty. Also, walking the thin line of kitsch and style, which is one very easily crossed, is not something that people who own one of these houses can achieve.

What I really like about the Case Study House Program is that it was created to both celebrate style AND to solve the housing shortage that came after the Depression. By creating hoses that were easily duplicated and that used good materials to solve potential problems the owners could face in the future.

My question would be, why don’t we build hoses like these anymore?

  1. I think we don't build them like this any more is because people want big and grand and huge spaces and ginormous kitchens and mid-century wasn't based on huse ... though they created a sense of large space by open floorplans and large windows.
That said, I'd probably update the kitchen a little ...

    1. Agree.
Very that. People are just.... greedy and superficial?
They don't like character and style. They want... space???

    2. Your right Six! And the funny part??? The homes with the style and character or eclectic and quirky are the ones people remember.

  2. Nice, but I would have replaced the stove from the 70s rather than refurbished it... mostly because I know how inefficient stoves were in the 70s.

    1. I think they refurbished it and made it better?
And it looks FAB in that kitchen.

  3. How beautiful is that? What a fantastic job he did in restoring everything --- right down to finding an old oven and refurbishing and installing it. He's right, there probably aren't many left. Something like this should be preserved the way the FLW homes.

    1. I thought it was fantastic.
And there aren't many left. People have torn them down to build monstrosities without any sense of ... anything. Ugh.

  4. I think Bob nailed it. Folks want their McMansions.

    1. And they do.
The suburbs in Chicago are chockful of giant boxes with no details, no style, no sense of beauty. Just big boxes.

  5. "It's dated", "I want marble countertops" "we'll just paint this gray"

Thermally it's probably a disaster and no just running down to Lowe's or Home Depot for hardware. However, this owner is more of a temporary steward for this house. Refreshingly he respects the design and craftsmanship and as he says, he'll forgo the carpet so that he can refurbish the steel.

    1. I love the idea of 'temporary steward'. Yes.
Design AND craftsmanship. There you go. Two lost skills nowadays. People go with stupid DIYs and Lowe's.

  6. Not quite on point, but speaking of "Mid-Century Modern," I binged it last weekend and LOVED it! Laugh out loud funny in places alright! I hope there will be a second season. I love Nathan Lane and would watch him in ANYTHING.

And isn't he FABULOUS here?? Oh, I'm going to rewatch them all this weekend.

  7. Jamie Mazur is SO familiar. I think I know him but have no idea from where. ANYWAY, love the house! Palm Springs had so many mid-century modern homes and some owned by purists. Very cool.

    1. Plam Springs is fabulous!
It's also a time capsule. So many fabulous buildings!

  8. Unfortunately, and sadly, housing has become as bad as clothing and other things...disposable. Like Forever 21, Zara and H&M, the housing comes and goes, and it's appalling how fast a home goes up anymore. No wonder people have issues only a year later with things. Does anyone want quality, creative craftsmanship anymore? It also explains why everything is so Stepford. I like touches of mid century, but can't go 100% in...it feels cold to me if too much.

  9. OMG so on point!!
It's the mass production of bland dwellings that focus on space rather than design and quality. Ugh.
And the DIYing of everything and the use of cheap materials do have their backlash...
BTW, I kind of agree with you. There could be TOO MUCH of a good thing...

    XOXO
