Oh, THE HISTORY OF SOUND...!
Apparently, neither @PaulMescal nor @JoshO'Connor have an online presence, but all the same, I kind of stand them. They could be my favorite straight men. They have starred in some of my all time fav gay movies; Paul did @allofusstrangers and Josh did @god'sowncountry. I love those movies.
And I think I'm going to love this one, too. I read the short story, that goes something like this:
I sang for David then.I’ve always felt as if what came from my throat and lips was not mine, like I was stealing rather than making something. This body was mine—the constriction of my diaphragm, the pressure in my throat, the lips and the softening of my tongue that shaped the sound—but what left me, ringing through the crown of my head so my skull felt more bell than corporeal, flooding my ears’ tympani, vibrating through my nose, wasn’t my own. More like the sound of wind in the trees or over a glass bottle. Or, better, an echo of my own voice, coming out of my mouth. A repetition. I can’t sing like that anymore—and I miss it. Now I have this weak warble, this drone that nobody tells me isn’t any good.As I ended the song, the color yellow faded to the taste of wet wood.“Where in hell did you learn that?” he asked.I shrugged.“I wouldn’t be puttering around school if I had a voice like that,” he said. When he stood to get another beer, I saw he was inches taller than anybody in the room.We stayed together until dawn. Me singing to his piano. I might have been able to hum a D at both octaves, but I’d never met anyone with a memory like his. Tilting his head, plugging one ear with a finger, humming a note or two, he’d tease the song out, only fumbling a line when he was absolutely drunk.

So, yes. This is one to look forward to.

ReplyDeleteThis does look like a good movie. Like it’s will pull all the emotional strings.

Oh it's going to be one of those movies.
DeleteYou should read the short story is based on. So beautiful.

I was sold at Paul Mescal and Josh O'Connor. I've seen both those films you mentioned and they are both wonderful. And this looks fabulous, too.
ReplyDeletexoxo
They're great actors. Really.
DeleteAnd seeing them together??????? unf.
And this has got me excited.
XOXO
Big says,
ReplyDeleteOMG. Very lovely. Reminds of "Brokeback Mountain," no? If the entire film is as good as the trailer, Oscar will knock.
XOXO
It looks great.
DeleteAnd it seems it's very well done (cinematography, art direction and especially, music) so we should be good to go!
XOXO
This is going to be a tear jerker; we've got enough sadness in America right now. Only Mescal openly identifies as straight, though that's somewhat suspect. O'Connor says it's none of your business.
ReplyDeleteIt's a great story, you can read it online.
DeleteAlso, take into account the time period when it takes place.
My default for people is straight/cisgender unless they identify differently. Any other assumption is just silly.
XOXO
I melted reading that.
ReplyDeleteOh, it's beautifully written.
DeleteIf you have time, clic the link. The whole short story is there. Recommend.

I think this actually does look pretty good. I look forward to some gay movies and then I'm just like oh it's so stereotypical. But this actually looks like it could turn into a classic. And I just love Josh O'Connor. I fell in love with him when I was watching The Durrells of Corfu. His part was very wiley in that.
ReplyDeleteI always look forward to gay movies that come from big studios.
DeleteIt's what keeps THEM making gay movies. But you are correct. It has all the marks of a great movie.
And Josh is in The Durrells??
XOXO
Yes...he was so fun in that. I miss that show, excellent cast all the way around.
DeleteJe l'ai vue au festival de Cannes, c'est un film plein d'émotion profonde. Hermanus et Shattuck ont créé un chef-d'œuvre de romance. Je crois que cela sera bien reçu, un film du canon gay.

That trailer looks wonderful. I'm going to read the short story, thanks for the link. Josh O'Connor was my favourite actor in "The Durrells" series -- a real leading light of a performance. I haven't seen "All of Us Strangers" yet, so I'm not familiar with Paul Mescal.
