Oh, Messy...!

I've been meaning to post this here for a while. Since February, actually. And I keep forgetting to do it.
And then @lolayoung came up on the VMS and I was, like, 'it's TIME!

I love her sound. I got this album and it was on repeat in my car for weeks. I am very partial to women singer songwriters with confessional lyrics and awesome style (Amy Winehouse, Macy Gray, the lot). I also love that singspeak, TBH. But the first time I heard Lola I had the same reaction I have when I hear someone who's gonna become an obsession: "WHO IS THAT?"

So there you have it.

XOXO

P.S. this is her, live. Sanitized for American audiences:

  1. She's not bad. I hate the patter-like sing speak.

    1. She's very good I think. And so probably do some of those one hundred million people who hit play on the video.
And you don't find a ton of singer-songwriters among the young ones. That's salient. And I like singspeak. It makes the songs relatable and makes the storytelling move. I love how her rhythm changes so abruptly.

I’ve heard this song on the radio forever. And it drives me crazy when the edits come to sanitize it. Thanks for posting the original.

    1. Yes!
And I knew the original version was not that tame, but that's radio play for you.

  3. I like her! And her voice is richer live.

    1. I know, right?
She's got one of those 'older' voices, IMHO.

  4. I actually never heard of her, but I like her voice. I will have to look more into her and some of her music. I don't know she'll be my Amy Winehouse replacement, it's going to take somebody phenomenal to replace her but I do love her voice. And I like the vibe of the song too.

And on a side note I saw our Queen Madonna is coming out of the new album in 2026 as a follow-up to confessions on the Dance Floor. Yay

    1. I think she's very interesting.
Lots of potential. I think there's only one Amy Winehouse. Not even Adele was able to 'replace' her. She's more palatable, but she's not Amy.

And yay for Madge! I'm ready for it.

  5. I liked her better live, even if it was sanitized; the voice had more texture to it.

    1. Same.
I just did not like the sanitizing. But it was Fallon, so obviously it was gonna be bland.
