Oh, Dressing for Winter...?
We have had our first deep drop in temperature here and I guess talking about winter is appropriate. Especially if you are lower-middling class. Or were. In England. In the XIX century.
First, the mules. Second, the shirt for underwear (I know some of you boys would balk at this). The high waisted pants, that we keep seeing through the 1800’s (I have sailor pants with similar front and high waisted is the rage on insta, or it was until March) and the cuff links! Also, layers.
Everything from shaving to the cravat to the suspenders to the vest and coat would depend on the money the man had (like today) and were symbols of social status. And don’t get me started on bathing.
But I love the hat!

ReplyDeleteThough not extremely well to do, he does seem to cut a fashionable swath.
As for bathing, growing up in a family of 6 boys in the 60s in a 2 bedroom, 1 bath apartment, baths (no shower) were for Saturday night. The rest of the week a good washing at the sink before school would do.

I know, right?
DeleteHe was 'middle class'. And I CANNOT imagine six boys and two adults and ONE bathroom. Shifts??
XOXO
I'd stop dressing after the thirtieth button on the pants!!

Oh, they're fabulous.
DeleteI have two pairs of pants like those. One pair was Marithé et François Girbaud from the nineties and the other pair is a real pair of sailor pants a real sailor 'donated' to me. Well, he donated the pants and several unforgettable weekends.
XOXO
HuntleyBiGuy:
DeleteDonated or forgot them? 😜
Hahaha
DeleteHe donated them. He ended up with a pair of gray sweatpants...
XOXO
None of it looks comfortable.
ReplyDeleteLOL
DeleteBut they kept you warm! I love the pants. And I covet that coat!!
XOXO
Big says,
ReplyDeleteTotal pain. I would've been looking for shortcuts. LOL.
Bathing? We had 1 bathroom for 5 people.... Like Huntley, Saturday or Sunday was it for full-on baths and the "whore's bath" at the sink had to suffice the rest of the week. 'Course, showers at school once gym classes began in 6th grade helped.
XOXO
Ha!
DeleteWell, that's how they dressed back then. At least there was not a wig involved?
And I'm still cackling at the 'whore's bath'!!!
LOL
XOXO
??? Did the sailor want his pants back?
ReplyDeleteLMAOO
DeleteHe 'donated' them to me.
I still have them. He was delicious.
XOXO
As much as I like the dressing of men going far back, I am probably lucky I didn't live back then. Imagine being in a hurry to get naked for some sport nookie, and it would take a half hour to get everything off. LOL! No. for me now just whip off the turtleneck and button flies and go to town!
ReplyDeleteCan you IMAGINE???
DeleteBut I'm sure the gays found ways around everything. A nookie is a nookie, no?
XOXO
