Oh, Peru…?

Oh hun, talking about Drag icons!

I love @cocoperu. I think she’s absolutely unmistakable and fabulous. I think the first time I was aware of her was when we watched Trick one day during one of the gay/straight alliance meetings at WVU. Those were the days!

Also, she’s got the best stories to tell and is tons of fun! I find that Drag artists that started before the art form would become more mainstream to be so very entertaining and fabulous. You needed tons of personality and talent to bring people out to the bar on a Thursday night!

Don’t believe me? Just watch, babes…

XOXO

P.S. Thanks, @Mads. Your post inspired me.

  1. See another queen who is legendary and drag royalty. I love all drag queens...but the queens like Peru, Merman , Bunny and that ilk, I have even more respect and favor for because they did it their way and had no help or push from reality shows. And yet here they still are. Coco is a complete hoot. I see a lot of myself in her.A time when drag was not so sugar coated and could be thrown together in a pinch and everyone thought you were just as glamourous.

    1. I don't think you mean ilk: Modern usage typically carries negative connotations, as seen in phrases like "criminals and their ilk" or "politicians and their ilk

    2. She is legendary.
We have to remember that many Drag artists from her 'time' did not survive the Plague. That was something that also affected Drag artists. And we are lucky some of them are still with us and still working!
      I love 'thrown together' Drag!!

  2. Interesting. Even though there's the attempt to put a positive spin on the interview, she comes across as bitter. Even her praise of Jinx and others sounds more like a complaint. No matter what your art form is, time will always pass you by.

    1. She's acerbic.
But more cynical than bitter. And I think there's some basis for her being critical of the 'new girls'. Some of them are great on social media or become famous after the show but very, very few will be interviewed/working twenty years from now....

    2. I completely agree with you and the Coco is saying. The queens that come off of drag race that have real backbone and talent have been so few. I think that's why there's so much animosity with local Queens and legendary Queens who have been around for a while who have the real talent. Yet the real girls come in just because of a reality show and get paid double or triple for a showing and then their routine stinks. And I have seen it. I would be excited to see a couple queens that I really enjoyed and then when I saw them I'm like that's it? Which is partially why I always prefer the campier Queens who have been around a while

  3. I love her; I love her longevity in a world where it seem younger queens get all the notice. Plus, that voice slays me. And what a wonderful, sometimes tragic, life she's had and shares.
Plus, I would love to hand with Coco and Bianca and just sit back and listen!
    xoxo

    1. OMG she's a riot.
And the character is fabulous. The voice alone!!
If Coco and Bianca get together we'll need hazmat suits.

  4. Big says,
"...DRAG wouldn't play." LOL! Sometimes, The Gate Keepers are...well, idiots. Old School drag is still the best, though.

    1. Old School Drag is THE Drag.
That's why I like Pageant Girls. They remind me of the fab Drag of years ago. You needed Charisma, Uniqueness, Nerve AND Talent galore.

      XOXO
