Oh, Keegan....

First of all, damn.
Second, HOT DAMN!
Third, I like his contribution.

I think Heated Rivalry would hit us differently if we were sportspeople in the closet or if we would have been in the closet while playing some sort of sport professionally. Of course it would! I remember the guys from @EmptyNetters reviewing the first episode (I have watched ALL of their reviews and I strongly recommend you do the same: these straight men are awesome) and going off on the discrepancies they saw concerning Hockey. Then they got hooked (in episode 3) and their hearts took over.

Something similar happened with Keegan, I see. But that's the thing: I got hooked because it was a gay love story that was meaty, that has soul and in which men seem emotionally close. People also kept watching because it was well written and like me, they enjoyed the arch and the character development (they literally summarized a whole book in one episode, BTW). What I really liked was that hookup/emotional involvement/love progression the main characters go through. Because it's very realistic. Been there, done them, babes.

But Keegan brings up very good points. Give him a watch.

XOXO

P.S. you can follow @KeeganHirst on insta. I currently am. Because DAMN! And yes, until I'm very, very sore.

I think he gave a great analysis of the series. A lot of shows take awhile to find their footing and figure out where they want to go. And he speaks from being in the sports world and the toxic masculinity inherent in sports. He broke it down beautifully. Once you take the series for what it is, you can appreciate it more.

  2. Interesting review! He needs to be more patient about waiting for the story arc to unfold, though. There will be more angst about closeted life in the second season, I'm sure. As well as backlash about Scott's coming out? I'm just guessing, since I haven't read the books.

  3. Big says,
Sometimes...sometimes, it nice to just enjoy a well-written, well-acted, well-directed film or TV series without analyzing it all. Let it take you and consume you. A lot of film and TV start as what some would call "slow" and then take you on a burn journey that isn't easy to forget. Those are the ones I like the best.
