Oh, Material Conditions ...?
Oh yes, babes. Madonna can tell us a lot of things about the US. Her music (and career) can be used as a barometer to gauge what’s going on in the country at a certain moment, ever since she came out in the eighties. And the thing is, what @artlust is telling us here would somehow explain why you may have (or not have) a house today. I'm gonna let this commenter give you exactly my reasoning to post this video here:

ReplyDeleteOK...Boomer here. I understand what she's trying to say, and it's mostly true. But the WWII generation were NOT able to have houses without loans. My parents bought a small bungalow in the late 40s on a 20-year mortgage AFTER having saved a down payment. And a single-parent household in the 70s working a single job making the absolute minimum wage couldn't afford to buy a house. They rented --- and where they could rent on that kind of money was not the best of neighborhoods, either. I won't argue that Reagan began the handouts to the wealthy. That's a no-brainer. The numbnuts republicans just made it worse with their tax cuts for the uber wealthy. But our housing problem today is two-fold: Stagnant wages and what the recent Housing Act tries to address: Stop the giant private equity firms from buying up houses and sending the prices skyrocketing further into the stratosphere.

DeleteDid they need extra help? Many did but they got the push. It does not exist anymore. And these were overwhelmingly white people. And people in the seventies did have one breadwinner and could buy property. Then women had to go out and work too. That's when the trickle down fuckery started.
Many people do not grow up in a culture where owning a house is common occurrence. That creates a space to consider owning property a natural progression.

I will just say that I bought my first home at 25, after college, and held onto until after moving to be with Carlos in Miami; I had a renter in there for several years before selling that house.

Now, today it's so much harder for people to get into a home which is why we vote the GOP out who only want to fuck with elections, lock up immigrants, enable a racist rapist pedophile grifter, and give tax breaks to people who own several homes!!!
